FYF Fest 2016: ft. Kendrick Lamar, Oneohtrix Point Never, Julia Holter, and the dream of reasonably priced bottled water

A gargantuan outdoor music festival that exists in the densely-populated confines of L.A. proper and not out in the literal desert? Let’s give the people behind FYF Fest (Sean Carlson is its founder) some verbal kudos for even sticking with the idea, as changes in venue/park have not been met without complaints about dust clouds pluming overhead and tremendously long waits for entrance that necessitated a retroactive discount on the pass price (if the numerous anecdotes are to be believed). FYF switched sites from the Los Angeles State Historic Park to the current Exposition Park near USC in 2014, and it appears the kinks are mostly ironed out. The lineup’s been a continual draw despite all of the growing pains, so let’s check out this year’s, shall we?

I guess the headliners are Kendrick Lamar, LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, and Grace Jones, but if TMT were to lay out a suggested FYF itinerary, we would probably advise somersaulting between performances from the following artists: Young Thug, Oneohtrix Point Never, Julia Holter, Andy Sott, Grimes, Wild Nothing, Floating Points, and Kelela. I’ve also been on an atypical Beach House kick lately, and Wolf Parade’s apparently been resuscitated after… something. Both bands’ll be there.

FYF will take place August 27 - 28, again at Exposition Park in Los Angeles. Check out the full lineup here; go without steak for month if you’re buying a pass.
