Gabriel Saloman announces Movement Building Vol. 2 on Shelter Press

Gabriel Saloman used to be in a band, but we’re not going to talk about that today. We’re going to talk about two things today, and neither of them are about the band he used to be in. The first thing we are going to talk about is Gabriel Saloman and how he is releasing a new album on the second spookiest date of the year, October 30. The second thing we are going to talk about is some hot gossip I heard from Debbie earlier.

But first things first: Saloman’s album! It’s called Movement Building Vol. 2, a fitting title for the follow-up to 2014’s Movement Building Vol. 1. (I know, I know, you’re dying to hear what Debbie had to said, but just sit tight for a minute. Shelter Press, the label that Movement Building Vol. 2 will be on, sent us some hot deets and I want to get through them.) Although it continues the series’s focus on Saloman’s commissioned compositions for contemporary dance accompaniment, where Volume 1 consisted of the album-length piece “The Discliplined Body,” Volume 2 contains five new tracks drawn from a multi-media dance performance from earlier this year, titled The Sensationalists. Most of the pieces were performed on a combination of bowed guitars and acoustic percussion, forming “an utterly unique hybrid of avant-drone, psych-rock, and Japanese traditional music.” And good news, like a few other things this year, The Sensationalists even worked with elements of ASMR, attempting to create physical responses in the listeners, something Saloman got a lot of practice in with his old band that we’re not talking about today.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Taylor, are you holding off on the Debbie gossip because it’s something hurtful about our mutual friend Bill?” To that I say, hold your horses, friend, I’ve still got more to say about Gabriel Saloman. Mostly I just wanted to let you know that it’s the second piece in a trilogy that Saloman is planning and that it will conclude next year with Volume 3. I also wanted to let you know that you can go ahead and pre-order it right now.

Check out a preview track from the album titled “Gagaku” below. And oh shoot, there’s my ride, I guess we’ll have to talk about what Debbie had to say later. Sorry!
