Glenn Branca to premiere David Bowie tribute live in New York

Glenn Branca’s upcoming tribute performance to David Bowie is looking pretty swell. The renowned experimental guitarist and his sextet, the Glenn Branca Ensemble, are set to appear at New York City’s Roulette on October 8, premiering his Bowie-inspired composition “The Light (for David).” The program is also going to include a reworked version of The Third Ascension, the most recent installment in a series of pieces that started with 1981’s Ascension. Both compositions at Roulette will be performed with four guitars, bass, and drums.

Branca, who once collaborated with Bowie on a Tony Oursler audio-video installation in Berlin, has previously expressed his great admiration for the late musician. He wrote: “David Bowie was our hero. Intelligent, talented and with the desire to create a really new different rock…When he died, I was shocked like everybody else….I hadn’t realized how much he meant to me throughout most of my life. I think somehow knowing he was here, was like having a muse.”

If you happen to be in Downtown Brooklyn on Saturday, October 8, be sure to catch the Glenn Branca Ensemble at Roulette at 8 PM. Performers include Glenn Branca (conductor); Reg Bloor, Arad Evans, Brendon Randall-Myers, and Luke Schwartz (guitars); Greg McMullen (bass); and Owen Weaver (drums). Click here for more details.
