Gorillas are ground-dwelling, predominantly herbivorous apes that inhabit the forests of central Africa. The eponymous genus Gorilla is divided into two species: the eastern gorillas and the western gorillas (both critically endangered), and either four or five subspecies. They are the largest living primates. The DNA of gorillas is highly similar to that of humans, from 95–99% depending on what is counted, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the chimpanzees and bonobos. The word “gorilla” comes from the history of Hanno the Navigator, (c. 500 BC) a Carthaginian explorer on an expedition on the west African coast to the area that later became Sierra Leone. They encountered “a savage people, the greater part of whom were women, whose bodies were hairy, and who our interpreters called Gorillae…”

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s “British virtual band” Gorillaz have announced that their new album, Humanz, is coming out on April 28. Clocking in at 14 tracks, it will be available on standard CD, vinyl, digital download, a 19-track 2-CD Deluxe, and one of those “limited edition Super Deluxe Vinyl Box Set” things, which contains each of the 14 tracks on its own separate vinyl disc, backed by an alternate version! (Yup, that means you get 14-discs: take that, “ENVIRONMENTALISTS.”) Humanz also features guest spots from the likes of Grace Jones, Mavis Staples, Danny Brown, De La Soul, Pusha T, Kali Uchis, Kelela, and a bunch more A-listers that don’t have Z’s in their names.
You can debate your conscious/wallet concerning which version to pre-order here, and then peep their new video, a six minute clip entitled “Saturnz Barz (Spirit House)” and directed by Hewlett, which features four of the tracks from the album.
The band will also be playing a “secret show” in London today at which they will perform the entire album! Unfortunately it is already sold out, so the internet probably shouldn’t have even bothered telling me that. Oh well. Excelsior!
