RIP: Guru of Gang Starr

From MTV:

Just over a month since undergoing surgery following a heart attack, Gang Starr MC Guru (born Keith Elam) has died at age 43. According to a statement, Guru died of cancer-related causes on Monday after a long fight with the disease.

Guru’s longtime collaborator and partner Solar mourns his loss in the statement and explains that Guru had written a letter to his fans that was to be released upon his death.

“The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip-hop icons of all-time — my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru,” Solar said. “Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.”

The Pixies pay back fans with two fan-exclusive shows in June

The Pixies have always been good to their fans. After all, it’s in their interest to be when they’ve been around as long as they have. And because The Pixies have no need to recruit new listeners, they have announced two special shows at the Troxy in London, June 3 and 4, exclusively for dedicated fans. Non-fans are so uncool that they reportedly won’t even hear about the concerts. Tickets are on sale and only available here, where The Pixies are proud to emphasize that there is no booking fee, ticket surcharge, or credit card charge. They love you just that much.

If you can’t make it to the show, submit your email at the site to download the video and MP3 of “La La Love You,” recorded live in 2009. And you can check out our recent interview with Frank Black too.

RIP: Lee Altomare from metal band The Communion

From The Communion:

Yesterday morning, Lee passed away due to complications from eye surgery.

We are all deeply wounded, white and shaking with shock, by this sudden loss of our great friend. He brought us all together. He brought out the best in us, enabled and encouraged us to be at our absolute best in music and life. I personally cannot imagine being where i am today without all Lee put together.

I say all this with zero hyperbole, and those who knew him best no doubt feel the same way we do at this moment. Our hearts go out to his amazing family and all his friends, as well as anyone whose supported us in the last 6 years. Know that Lee loved, appreciated, and cared about all of you very much, as do we.

We’ll miss you forever.

Phosphorescent announces spring tour, wraps beard around entire world

In folk legend, it is said that once the beard of Matthew Houck (who you and I may know better as Phosphorescent) reaches a certain length, he will journey across the world playing his brand of hushed folk. In a far more believable situation, Houck goes on tour whenever he has new songs to play (or just wants to play old ones), which he will when the new Phosphorescent record, Here’s To Taking It Easy, is released May 11 on Dead Oceans (check out a track from the new album at the Chocolate Grinder). Whichever story you believe, Phosphorescent is going on a spring tour, in which he will spend a little time in the United States and a whole lot of time in Europe. Phosphorescent will be announcing more US dates for the end of the summer, so any fears about missing Houck and his mighty beard can be put to rest.

Phosphorescent dates:

05.10.10 - New York, NY - Other Music (free instore)
05.11.10 - Brooklyn, NY - Union Pool
05.12.10 - Philadelphia, PA - The Blockley
