Heaps of Tindersticks soundtrack fun on the horizon; not fun like Where the Boys Are ’84 soundtrack fun, but fun nonetheless

Constellation Records will be releasing a drool-inducing 5CD/5LP box set containing the entire Tindersticks’ Claire Denis soundtrack work over the past 15 years (four by the band, Vendredi Soir by Dickon Hinchliffe, and L’Intrus by Stuart Staples). And FOUR of the six soundtracks have never been released (everything except Nanette et Boni and Trouble Every Day). Claire Denis Film Scores 1996-2009 is out April 26 but will illicit premature elations from now until Vendredi soir, at least.

Of course the box set itself is something special, too. From Constellation:

The set will be housed in a custom window-cut slipcase made from deluxe black uncoated 18pt cardstock with foil embossing — sleeve cover images will shine through the window cut when inserted in the package. Also included is a 48pp perfect-bound booklet with extensive color plates of film stills and an essay (in English and in French translation) by renowned music writer Michael Hill (who has also contributed liner notes for collections by Lou Reed, Sam Cooke, The Replacements and others).

Fuck the music! (or, as Cee Lo would say, “Forget the music!”) Just having this set in your collection will up the resale value of your house by 9%!

The sharp-dressed men will celebrate the box set release and their partnership with Denis by playing a unique set of dates featuring their soundtrack sounds in front of Denis’ film images. The first of these shows will be on April 26 in London, England at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. The day after (that’d be April 27), a special screening of Nenette et Boni followed by an onstage Q&A with ‘Sticks singer Stuart Staples and Claire Denis will take place at the BFI Southbank in London. A Los Angeles show is also confirmed at the end of April, but considering the provocation for these shindigs came via a San Francisco Film Festival invitation, expect a similar spectacle to be announced there in May.

Ben Gibbard finally covers GG Allin for WFMU benefit compilation, alongside Ted Leo, Ty Segall, The Mountain Goats, and other nice depraved guys

If you’re anything like the average TMT reader, you have a tendency to hate life and consider everyone around you a scumfuck, and yet you also can’t help but swoon over the gentle, tender-hearted melodies of dapper fellows like The Mountain Goats and Death Cab for Cutie. Sometimes when you’re in the middle of slitting your forehead with a razor, just to confront the fear, you hear a highlight from Transatlanticism come on KISS FM, and suddenly you’re alive again, floating in the aether, suffocating with love. Well, for the hundreds upon hundreds of people like you, New Jersey’s (really, the Universe’s) premier radio station WFMU is offering a very special 7-inch compilation that marries your two tendencies in a big way.

Rated GG features squeaky-clean renditions of Allin classics by Ben Gibbard, Ted Leo, Ty Segall, The Mountain Goats, and Fucked Up, and since only so many swears can be censored on one 7-inch single, the party spills over into the digital world, with a bonus download of more covers by people like Home Blitz and, well… TBA. Rated GG will only be available to those that give generously to WFMU’s pledge drive, which started yesterday and runs for two more weeks. The single is being offered as part of a prize pack for those pledging $75 or more during TONIGHT’S broadcast of “The Best Show on WFMU,” hosted by comedy legend (and GG enthusiast) Tom Scharpling. The show broadcasts from 9 PM-12 AM EST, and will even have some live performances by Ted Leo and A.C. Newman. If you need some time to sort out your finances, there will be a second opportunity next Tuesday — same time, same show.

$75 might seem a tad steep for one 7-inch, but you’re also getting a “Best Show” poster, t-shirt, and button, a WFMU shirt and sticker (or soap!), and the satisfaction of helping out an amazing radio station that relies entirely on listener donations. There are plenty of other incentives for pledges of any amount (including fantastic handcrafted mix CDs by the station’s on-air DJs), which you can see in a nice list right here. If you got anything out of freeform radio during 2010, now is the time to give back. After all, it’s exactly the kind of altruism that GG Allin embodied every night on stage.

Jesu releases new album Ascension in May… assuming people are still interested

There comes a point in every music writer’s life when they are faced with a solitary daunting task that challenges their very core. For some, it’s coming up with that one descriptor that’s going to perfectly capture an album’s essence. For others, it’s letting go of some long-held musical pretense that will enable their taste and writing to evolve naturally to its next phase. For many, it’s writing about Radiohead. For this guy, it’s writing about Jesu. I mean is there really something that can be said to make J. Broadrick’s newest incarnation sound interesting? No offense to you fans out there, and honestly I don’t think the music is half bad (honestly), but come on, you gotta admit it’s as boring as this year’s Oscars. Trust me, the press release on this provided little help in the “intensity” department.

In any case, on May 10, Jesu will be releasing a full-length titled Ascension on Mark Kozelek’s Caldo Verde record label. The aforementioned press release states that this will be “the first traditional release since 2007,” whatever that means. It then goes on to describe the album as being “more like a weather pattern than a piece of music.” Seriously, people are getting paid to do this?

The Control Group signs The Deer Tracks, hopelessly confusing fans of Deerhoof, Deerhunter, and Deer Tick

The Deer Tracks recently announced that they have signed with The Control Group for their new EP, The Archer Trilogy pt. 1 — a pretty big deal, if you’re into a label that offers ringtones for its bands alongside tour information (seriously — check out the website; who doesn’t want Kings of Leon to play every time your mother calls?).

While The Deer Tracks may also seem to slip into a long roster of forest/fauna-named bands from the US, once you hear their bittersweet brand of electronic pop with tinkling piano notes and airy vocals, it makes perfect sense that a) they’re from Sweden, and b) they should join the same label that brings us El Perro Del Mar.

Out on March 15, the new album is, as its name indicates, the first in an anticipated trilogy from the duo, with pt. 2 to follow in the summer.

The Archer Trilogy pt. 1 tracklist:

01. The Smallest Cube
02. Ram Ram
03. Karlavagn
04. Mio
05. Books of Blood

David Pajo leaves Interpol, makes the very un-rock ‘n’ roll decision to spend more time with his family. Boring.

After only about a year of service, David Pajo (who made his name as a member of Slint, Tortoise, and Zwan) has announced that he will be leaving Interpol immediately. Pajo, who decided that time with his family was more important than life on the road, joined Interpol last year after original bassist Carlos Dengler left the band and decided to spend more time doing nothing important.

The remaining members of the band and Pajo both composed and published public statements, which can be read on Interpol’s website, explaining the departure. Interpol assured fans that “We’re all friends. It’s just an Out-of-the-hotel, Into-the-home sorta thing. He’s going to be missed to be sure. Aside from being an exceptional musician, Pajo is a wonderful person to be around.”

After Pajo broke the news, he explained the separation: “I’ll be taking a break from touring to focus on family. There are no personal, artistic or health reasons — it’s really as simple as that!” Fans who might be afraid of a future without Pajo-music had their fears washed away like rain, as Pajo made sure to mention that he “will continue to record and perform music, with bands as well as solo, I just won’t be touring as much.”

Interpol have already tapped Brad Truax (who’s played with a whole bunch of bands ranging from Cass McCombs and Animal Collective to Soldiers of Fortune and Home) to be Pajo’s replacement. Truax’s first gig with the band will be the March 3 tour kick-off show in Hamburg, Germany; dates for that tour are below.
