Heather Trost to release first solo album Agistri, premieres new track

Having spent the last 15 years or so as a well-regarded side musician and arranger, lending her talent to such performers as Beirut, Josephine Foster, and the legendary Neutral Milk Hotel, composer/violinist Heather Trost is following her criminally under-heard Ouroboros cassette from 2015 with a new LP called Agistri.

Leading a session band that includes Deerhoof’s John Dietrich, Agistri continues the journey Trost began as half of beloved neo-world music duo A Hawk And A Hacksaw (alongside Neutral Milk’s Jeremy Barnes), collating psychedelia, Samba, Italian soundtrack music, Wurlitzer-heavy midcentury rock, and her own distinct flair into something that’s equally “poppy” and personal. Named for a Greek island, Agistri is also an attempt to capture the exoticism and the melancholy of being by the sea in a foreign country. As such, strong turquoise water energy is on display, as is Trost’s gift for arranging disparate instruments together to sound like the most natural thing in the world.

Tiny Mix Tapes is excited to premiere album cut “Agina” ahead of Agistri’s release on May 19 through Living Music Duplication. Spend some time with this music in preparation for Trost’s impending tour later this Spring and Summer (dates, ordering, and tracklist info all forthcoming).
