How to write a Wavves news story, lesson one: new US tourdates

When writing a new story about Wavves, the biggest challenge is to not mention any of the following:

1. Nathan Williams’ on-stage meltdown at the Primavera Festival last year due to…
2. Drugs, which he still most likely takes with…
3. Bethany Cosentino a.k.a. Best Coast, who is his girlfriend and who also owns…
4. A cat named Snacks that is featured on the covers of both of their new albums.

Yeah, try not to mention any of that stuff, will you? The following items, however, are acceptable:

• Wavves’ new album, King of the Beach (TMT Review), is due out in physical form August 3 via Fat Possum Records.
• It was recorded at Sweet Tea Recording in Oxford, Mississippi by Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse).

Gorillaz add new US tourdates; who knew cartoon characters could maintain so much cred?

It’s been awhile since Gorillaz released their debut album (TMT Review)… nine years to be exact. Who knew that a bunch of cartoon characters created by the singer of a 90s Britpop band and a graphic designer would still be credible almost a decade later? Well, not only are they still very much relevant, but Gorillaz will be embarking on a fall tour to support their recent album Plastic Beach (TMT Review) on Virgin Records. The “Escape to Plastic Beach” tour will hit most major cities in the US, and tickets go on sale for most dates during the first two weeks of August.

King Khan and the Shrines tour the Midwest, Northeast, and that Canada place in just two weeks

After slinging soul across the greater part of this nation last spring, King Khan and the Shrines are hitting the road once again to tag the towns they missed on their first go-round. And let me tell you, King Khan: good move on making amends with my home city of St. Louis by making us your first stop on this particular tour. People around my hood are still hopping mad that your manager had to go and get his ass arrested for mushrooms when you and BBQ Show were on your way to Off Broadway last November. It’s been annoying as hell to hear people bitch for months and fucking months about missing that show, so thank you for coming back so everyone can just shut up and get back to loving you again. Just don’t fucking cancel again (or break up again), please!

10.03.10 - St. Louis, MO - 2720 Cherokee

Fennesz confirms rare North American tour

While Christian Fennesz hasn’t released a new solo album since 2008’s Black Sea (TMT Review), the Austrian sound sculptor has been keeping himself quite busy. In fact, this year alone, Fennesz has so many projects that we found it absolutely necessary to include them in a bullet-point list. Luckily, we have a new intern, Steve, who we forced to compile all the information for you:

• Fennesz - Szampler (Tapeworm) (TMT News)
• Fenn O’Berg - In Stereo (Editions Mego)
• Fennesz - Endless Summer [new version] (Editions Mego)
• Food - Quiet Inlet (ECM)
• On (reworked by Fennesz) - Something That Has Form and Something That Does Not (Type) [due 8/03]
• Fennesz / Daniell / Buck - Knoxville (Thrill Jockey) (TMT News) [due 8/24]
• Remix of Oneohtrix Point Never’s “Returnal”Editions Mego) [due 8/30]

And now, hot on the heels of these releases — and, of course, our decade list (which placed his seminal Endless Summer album at #14) — Fennesz has confirmed a rare North American tour for September with so many gigs that we also found it necessary to make stupid intern Steve compile them in another list, with date, location, and venue. I love unpaid internships!

It’s a family affair: Tricky’s Mixed Race features his brother, a lutist, and Bobby from Primal Scream

Tricky is back, people! After the success of 2008’s Knowle West Boy, the trip-hop innovator is returning with his second release for Domino, entitled Mixed Race. Scheduled for an October 5 release, the new album celebrates Tricky’s diverse heritage and includes the soon-to-be-released single “Murder Weapon,” a reworking of Echo Minott’s classic dancehall jam, featuring vocals from Frankey Riley, the Irish-Italian chanteuse who has been touring with Tricky for the past couple years. The album has more guest appearances than you can shake a stick at, with turns from Jamaican singer Terry Lynn, Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream, lutist/vocalist Hakim Hamadouche, London-based vocalist Blackman, and Tricky’s brother Marlon Thaws, “who is the thirteenth of his fourteen siblings.” (Whaaaaaat? How does Tricky remember everyone’s names?) Mixed Race was produced in Paris, the charming land of fine wine, artisan cheese, and Marion Cotillard, where Tricky now lives. Sigh.

American tourdates are expected this fall. Yay!

Mixed Race tracklisting:

01. Every Day
02. Kingston Logic
03. Early Bird
04. Ghetto Stars
05. Hakim
06. Come to Me
07. Murder Weapon
08. Time to Dance
09. Really Real
10. Bristol to London

Non-American dates:

08.21.10 - Chelmsford, UK - V Festival
08.22.10 - Stafford, UK - V Festival
09.10.10 - Newport, Isle of Wight - Bestival

Ready or not, Wyclef Jean considers running for president of Haiti

According to his family, Wyclef Jean is thinking about running for president of Haiti. “Wait,” you think to yourself. “President?” It’s true that Jean has been ambassador-at-large for Haiti since 2007, and everybody knows about his Yéle Haiti Foundation, which raised enormous sums of money for Haiti immediately following the earthquake in January. But everybody also knows about the controversy surrounding Yéle’s fiscal history. And if elected, Jean would inherit the job of rebuilding the country — a role a bit more difficult than the humanitarian musician who speaks up for Haiti at the Grammy Awards.

While there’s no doubt about Wyclef Jean’s love for his country, Arcade Fire love Haiti too, but Régine Chassagne’s not talking about a mayoral bid for Port-au-Prince (he has his own Haiti-based charity too, Jean). Shirley Temple was also an ambassador once, but she never considered entering Czech or Ghanian politics (okay, so she didn’t have the residency qualification). Nonetheless, the deadline for announcing candidacy is August 7, so we’ll know soon enough just how serious this is. Though, if Jean chooses to run, he’ll have some competition: his uncle, Raymond Joseph — also US Ambassador to Haiti — has already announced his plans to run.
