Insha releases dazzling LP Dysplazia on Type

Boston’s Insha (real name Kaan Erbay) has just released a serpentine, bottomless electronic album via Type. Following in the footsteps of artists such as Arca and Rabit, Insha presents a cut-up, crumbling vision of a mosaic of styles, ranging from hip-hop to dubstep to movie and video game soundtracks.

Dysplazia is the debut effort from Erbay, who’s known as one of the founders and resident DJs of the dance collective DRAW. The title refers to an early stage of cancer, which — although morbid — fits well with the somber, Burial-esque atmosphere of the music. Dysplazia delivers on the promise of “transcending physical and virtual spaces [and] locating and inhabiting the ambiguous interzones which lie between and outside of taxonomic conventions;” at the same time, Erbay’s classical background makes the album formally focused and absorbing all throughout.
