Meanwhile, inside the mind of Nobodaddy…

Man, who the hell is Jason Lescalleet? (I knew this would happen… I f-ing told P and Squeo when I signed up for this wank-off job that that I only wanted to write about Animal Collective and Radiohead, and they said “oh sure, fine, yeah,” but now look what lands in my lap. Bullshit.) Lescalleet, Lescalleet, Lescalleet… see, if you say it a bunch of times, it doesn’t even seem like a real thing. It sounds like “let’s go eat.” Which, now that I think about it, I kind of want to do as soon as possible. I’m starv… hmm. Maybe this is just one of the editors fucking with me. Like maybe it’s one of their dumb, unknown, “I’m not just a critic; I also make art” solo projects that I’m unwittingly publishing tourdates for… no, no, that’s probably not true. This guy’s collab’ed with Graham Lambkin before, and no one here’s that cool. Lescalleet, Lescalleet, Lescalleet… hmm, maybe if I just say his name enough times, he’ll be famous. Then I’ll be famous too, for writing about him! Oh, fuck, wait, probably not. His music is super indecipherable. Damnit, not to mention indescribable. It sounds like… anthropomorphic laser jet printers trying to freak-out their digital pets with imaginary whistles down at the other end of Plato’s cave? Ick. What the fuck is that? Oh God, I might be a hack. Shit, Lescalleet. I’m so hungry right now.

1,2,3 announce additional spring tourdates while 3,4,5 can’t catch one break

Pittsburgh’s 1,2,3 have already been having quite a busy year and it seems like it will just get busier. To recap: they released their Dreamland Pt. 1 EP and now New Heaven LP, and they’ve already played a shit-ton of shows across this land we call the U.S.A. However, unlike other Pittsburghians, 1,2,3 will not be resting on their laurels and have announced a new set of dates to keep their fans happy throughout the month of May (a.k.a. the month my cat was born). 1,2,3 have also spilled the beans about what they will be doing on July 7: playing the Bunbury Fest with other (not) awesome bands Death Cab for Cutie, Weezer, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

1,2,3 also need a new van to keep up this touring and they want YOU to help pay for it. But, this is America, right? So fuck that Commie bullshit because I have a new set of skis to buy and I can barely make ends meet on my six-figure salary already.

Oh, and as always, 3,4,5 will be following 1,2,3 around like a a shy younger brother. But you don’t have to worry about them, they’ll just go away after a while when you’ve had a few drinks and forget how to count.

1,2,3 tourdates:

05.09.12 - Cleveland, OH - Beachland Ballroom
05.10.12 - Detroit, MI - Albert’s on The Alley
05.11.12 - Columbus, OH - The Basement
05.14.12 - Baltimore, MD - Metro Gallery
05.15.12 - Raleigh, NC - Slims
05.16.12 - Atlanta, GA - 529
05.17.12 - Birmingham, AL - Bottletree
07.14.12 - Cincinnati, OH - Bunbury Fest

How to Dress Well sails off on summer’s smoothest tour… holding a suitcase full of XXL JNCOs

RIP Yacht Rock: 2005-2010. (What? This thing was on till like two years ago???? Who knew.) Your humorous skewering of smooth, soulful summer jams inspired a whole new generation of smooth, dark, skewed hipster R&B. Don’t believe me? Take a crayon and draw a family tree, Oh Ye Who Doubt. That 10cc root has grown and blossomed into a beautiful How to Dress Well EP, last year’s Just Once. Okay, okay, so maybe HTDW’s ethereal rhythm and blues is more likely to have descended from good old Janet Jackson and Sade, but never ever (sorry, Michael McD) has a night with friends on a pleasure boat beneath the stars had a better soundtrack than the shimmering swells of a How to Dress Well track.

And just as we’re about to set sail into summertime, HTDW has announced a brief string of tour dates. Now, the man behind the sentence fragment/band name, Brooklynite Tom Krell, doesn’t have a new release scheduled just yet, but that’s not gonna stop him from taking some smooth time with you, girl. Krell will hit up select cities in the US and Canada, accompanied by Vancouver music dudes Aaron Read and Warp Records’ Babe Rainbow. Babe Rainbow will do the opening act thang for most of the dates listed below.

06.07.12 - Toronto, ON - Underground at the Drake
06.08.12 - Montreal, QC - Il Motore
06.09.12 - Brooklyn, NY - Public Assembly
06.13.12 - Vancouver, BC - The Waldorf Hotel
06.14.12 - Portland, OR - Holocene
06.15.12 - San Francisco, CA - Rickshaw Shop
06.16.12 - Los Angeles, CA - The Echo

Jean Piché’s long lost Heliograms reissued by Digitalis; take heed, fans of early Canadian electronic music

Listening to the works of Jean Piché, Canadian electronic music pioneer and video artist, is like walking into your own personal IMAX theatre, closing your eyes, and seeing what pops up behind your eyelids as you journey through the Amazon or watch a store being born or get stuck wandering inside a giant, pulsating womb. Piché’s minimalist electronic soundscapes take you there, maaaaaaan; listening is like meditating, but without all the hard work of making yourself not think and being afraid your roommates are gonna hear you doing some Enigma-style Gregorian chanting all weird and alone in your room. In short, his work is challenging, innovative, and fantastic.

Piché has taught electroacoustic music composition at the University of Montreal for the last few decades, all while building a rep as a software developer and audiovisual artist. But in a time long, long ago (the 1970s) and in a galaxy far, far away (Vancouver), dude was in college at Simon Fraser University, working on an LP made up of computer, digital synthesis, and acoustic jams. Called Heliograms, the album contains a track called “La mer à l’aube,” which has the distinction of being one of the first ever digital synthesis pieces produced in Canada. And like lots of long forgotten cool stuff and Great Art, Heliograms got lost in space when the small record label that had released it in 1982 went bankrupt.

Fortunately for music historians and fans of really freakin’ cool electronic music, Heliograms is getting a re-release through Digitalis Recordings in late May. Yankee guitarist/producer James Plotkin (Khanate, OLD, sunn 0))), ISIS) has remastered the album from ye olde original tapes, and the recordings have been magically transubstantiated into vinyl LPs. To accompany the release, Piché has created two new video projects for album tracks “Ange” and “Rouge.” No word on premiere dates for those videos yet, but you can check out excerpts from the album here:

Built to Spill, being, literally speaking, built to spill things, have, figuratively speaking, “spilled” a few things, including news about more tourdates and a new album

The plan [to tour] keeps coming up again

And the plan means [extending summer tour through September]

But [the tour] won’t accomplish anything

If it’s not [surrounding recording sessions for a new record, set for release via Warner Bros. in 2013 and following 2009’s There Is No Enemy (TMT Review)]

Like it’s always been

And [Built to Spill touring and working on a new album] makes me think of everyone [that likes that song “The Plan”]

And the cause of this is evident [in those guitar riffs still being rad]

But the [reason for me incorporating a 13-year-old song into this 2012 news story] cannot be found

Cause it’s so well hidden[?]

(BRIDGE: bum-bum-bum-bum BAHH! etc… Built to Spill fucking rules…)

This [goddamn website] doesn’t make any sense

In any less than [$30 per-thousand-impressions] increments

Of [Frito-Lay ad sales].

Death Grips to fans: FUCK YUH! Tour apparently canceled, new album to be released in the fall

Not two weeks after announcing an extension to their spring/summer Money Store tour, Pitchfork brings us the news that Death Grips have done a 180 and cancelled their tour in its entirety. The band dropped the news on Facebook, bluntly stating, “we are dropping out to complete next album NO LOVE [reportedly to be released Fall 2012]. see you when it’s done. (there are no longer any scheduled shows).” The resulting comments are a mix of outrage and disgust. It seems as if the band, what with all their current critical adulation, wanted to stir some shit up to maintain their gruff relationship with the public. It has worked.

No word on refunds, but a quick check of the venue where they’re supposed to play in Chicago still shows tickets for sale. Hopefully this is just a really bad joke and the shows aren’t actually cancelled; otherwise, someone needs to give these 40-odd venues a heads up.
