Esteemed ethnomusicologist and swell lo-fi bedroom rocker Julian Lynch, PhD, is set to head out on tour this summer with Montreal natives The Luyas. To help bring the unexpectedly expansive sound of Lines (his new album for Underwater Peoples) to life, The Luyas will serve as Lynch’s backing band, while Lynch will sit in with The Luyas during their set. The acts will alternate on a nightly basis to see who gets the sweet spot of not performing last as streams of people leave because, while they’re really enjoying the show, it’s just too damn late to be out on a school night.
The tour logically starts out with Lynch and The Luyas meeting up in Montreal, then the combined crew will snake their way through the Northeast quadrant of the US before wrapping things up in Chicago. It’s only a short drive home from there to Madison, WI for Lynch, while The Luyas, well, they’ve definitely gotten the raw end of this deal in terms of how the shows got mapped out. Maybe they can line up shows in Detroit or Toronto as they weave through the Great Lakes back to Montreal? Whatever fate The Luyas may face post-tour as Lynch happily eats fried cheese curds and sips beer in the sun-drenched streets of Madison in the summer, you’re guaranteed to have a rollicking good time if you catch this double-header live this June. Even on a weeknight.
