Kanye West announces solo tour featuring Kendrick Lamar; Jay Z announces solo tour featuring Rick Rubin laying on a couch

Kanye West announces solo tour featuring Kendrick Lamar; Jay Z announces solo tour featuring Rick Rubin laying on a couch http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1309/news-13-09-kanye-west.jpg

Kanye West’s six-pack abs look pretty good in a hi-res CGI approximation, but nothing beats the fleshy reality of his shape-shifting 12-pack on stage, glistening under the hot lights and forming the word “DONDA” in a complicated flex during the electrifying chorus of “Jesus Walks.”

Jay Z’s hashtags look pretty good on Twitter (#newrules #factsonly #mylaugh), but nothing beats the experience of seeing him on a jumbotron from the back row, folding his arms with a wry smile while Memphis Bleek praises New York.

Well, both megastars are coming to a town near you, separately, just as they released new albums this year, separately. Both artists are traveling across North America’s biggest arenas, so the spectacle will be grand wherever you go, but even though Kanye is bringing along Kendrick Lamar for most of his dates, I will be opting for the Magna Carter experience, simply because Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino will be opening every show by beaming a 3-month subscription to Rolling Stone into every Samsung phone in the arena.

Meat Puppets go on longest fall tour ever; this is your time to shine, Delaware!

“What are you doing this weekend?” asks Karen, the well-meaning office manager. “Me?” you ask, as if this would make Karen go away. “Well, I’m seeing a band called the Meat Puppets.” “The Meat…what?” asks Karen, confused. “Seminal underground rock band that blended country and punk?” you say. “Beloved by better-known legends like Nirvana, Pavement, and Soundgarden?” Karen pretends to look for a stapler on your desk, obviously uncomfortable. “That sounds… nice,” she says. “Have fun with your Meat Muppets!” But you can tell she doesn’t really mean it. And then, gradually, so slightly you hardly even notice, you start getting a reputation around the office as being kinda weird, and people stop inviting you to the after-work happy hours you always made excuses not to go to anyway, and then after six months you get downsized and everyone in the cubicles surrounding you breathes a sigh of relief that it was Weird Carl and not them.

But hey, it’s cool, because you, Weird Carl, will be enjoying the same Meat Puppets experiences as the literally thousands of people in cities all across America this fall, when founders Curt Kirkwood and Cris Kirkwood reunite with drummer Shandon Sahm and newly added second guitarist (and Curt’s son) Elmo Kirkwood! The Meat Puppets are hot off a series of sold out spring and summer dates in support of their recent album Rat Farm, and they’re going to pretty much every state in the upper forty-eight. Even you, Delaware! Residents of such sad, Meat Puppets-less states as Hawaii and Alaska can catch Curt Kirkwood chillin’ with Marc Maron on his WTF podcast sometime in late September.

Thee Oh Sees announce fall tour; this news post brought to you by the letter “E”!

Hello, reader. Do you have a moment to talk about the good news of the letter “E”? Though you may deny its power, the letter “E” is all around us. Indeed, without the letter “E” many sntncs would appar just lik this vry on. The letter “E” cares not if you accept it today or in 20 years — its love abides. Its love carries on through the ages, bolstering Scrabble scores and feeding beef and cheese to those in need with nary a skimp or a limit. Many have already heard the good news and taken it to heart, but there are still those whose hearts remain stony.

For those who have turned their backs on the almighty “E”, there remains one group of evangelists whose reach extends even to the darkest of places. That group is Thee Oh Sees, boasting a name that is 40% “E”! Thee Oh Sees bring the good news to the downtrodden, the lonely, and to those who are on the market for a vowel. Earlier this year, they released Floating Coffin (Tee Em Tee Review), an album whose title, bereft of the powerful “E”, illustrates how we are but husks, coffins inexplicably floating, outside the brilliance of the “E”. This fall, Thee Oh Sees will travel the nation in search of more converts. And praise! praise! Even more dates are to be announced soon! Truly we must give thanks to our most frequently used and powerful letter, “E”!

Digitalis publishes Brad Rose’s novella about space clink/jail/prison/pokey/big house; includes soundtrack featuring Charlatan, Prostitutes, and more

So, do y’all know Brad Rose? You know, the former editor of Foxy Digitalis, the fellah in charge of Digitalis Recordings, the hooded figure at the helm of pretty much every musical group you’ve ever heard of, the tech genius who figured out how podcasts work, all that. Okay, well, bad news. Turns out the guy has gotten himself stuck in a secret space jail. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Taylor, you’re mis-interpreting the news again, he’s not in space jail, he’s written a novella about space jail.” Tsk tsk, reader, that’s where you’re wrong.

I mean, I guess you’re partially right. Rose has just announced that Digitalis Industries will be releasing their first book in the form of Rose’s own sci-fi novella The Isolatarium. The Isolatarium tells the story of hacker Diadem Streng who finds himself trapped in the space pokey. Rose developed the idea for the book while working on last year’s Charlatan release of the same name, Isolatarium for Type Records. The book’s artwork is provided by Keith Rankin of Giant Claw, Orange Milk Records, and formerly of this little establishment itself. You can buy the book from Amazon and direct from the Digitalis Bandcamp (once the second half of the story is completed, there are plans to pursue a physical edition).

Rose has also put together a soundtrack to go with the book that’s available for free over at the Digitalis Bandcamp for everyone, even those of you who find books to be “dumb” and “something only old people like.” The soundtrack features a bunch of cuties whose shining faces have graced releases on the Digitalis imprint, such as Rose’s own Charlatan, Rankin’s Giant Claw, Prostitutes, and many others. At this point you’re probably wondering what gave me the impression that Rose is actually in space jail and not just writing fictional accounts of it while going about his Earthly business. Honestly? It was less of an “actual conviction” and more of a “vague notion coupled with my willingness to say pretty much anything to get you to like me.” Sorry about that. It will probably happen again.

Deerhoof hoof it up on fall tour, release stop-motion docu short

While there’s no news of a new album from the veteran Bay Area band, Deerhoof tour all the time, so it’s not all that surprising that they’ve announced a collection of dates in New York and all over the US West this fall. The announcement came via drummer (and occasional singer) Greg Saunier’s YouTube page, accompanied by a nifty stop-motion documentary of the band’s last tour (which happened earlier this year) assembled by their touring mate Liam Finn. The clip is set to the pluralized title track from 2012’s annual Deerhoof release, Breakup Song (TMT Review), and was recorded without the knowledge of the band. In addition to new tour dates, we’ve also learned today that you can still pull one over on the Hoof.

As mentioned above, TMT has no official news of new Deerhoof music, but using our highly sophisticated analytics systems and consulting with the official TMT psychic, we’re putting our money on a new album sometime soon. The band has released a new album or EP of some kind every year for the last 16 years, and while the lineup has changed gradually over that time, their output (and their initiative to support it via touring) hasn’t slowed down one bit.

If you go see them in November and they play new songs, then you’ll be validating the huge expense TMT undertakes to make these kind of prognostications, so please, dear reader, do your part.

Freddie Gibbs and Madlib announce EP, new track, LP, tour dates, basically everything short of a civil union

Okay, so: turns out indie rapper Freddie Gibbs and production mastermind Madlib are doing… just about everything together. Which, is cool and all; but it kinda leaves me with little space left in which to be funny. So I’m feeling a little conflicted. Either way, let’s round it up. Who knows, maybe the whole thing will just turn out hilarious on its own.

First, there’s a new EP by the duo, entitled Deeper and out September 24 via Madlib Invazion (which, believe it or not, is a little label run by Madlib), from which you can currently stream the title track right over here. The press release says that Gibbs “showcases the yin and yang of heartbreak and anger” on it; so there’s that. You can also buy the EP early right over here, just in case you want to feel the yin and yang of having/not having money.

Then there’s the main event: the pair’s Piñata LP, which is due February 4 of next year (also on Madlib’s cute label thingy) and which features Raekwon, Scarface, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Domo Genesis, Joey Bada$$, Ab Soul, BJ the Chicago Kid, Meech of Flatbush Zombies, Casey Veggies, Mac Miller, Polyester the Saint, and G-Wiz. Which, if nothing else, is a very long list of people, so color me rhetorically impressed!

Lastly, there’s a few tour dates going down all over the place this fall. And by “all over the place,” I really mean all over the globe. So pay attention, East Rutherford, New Jersey! You too, Fitzroy, Australia!

Deeper EP tracklisting:

Side A:
01. Deeper
02. Deeper (Instrumental)
03. Ups and Downs (Bonus Beat)

Side B:
01. Harold’s
02. Harold’s (Instrumental)
03. The Long Walk Home (Bonus Beat)

Tour dates:

09.08.13 - San Bernadino, CA - San Manuel Amphitheater
09.14.13 - Mountain View, CA - Shoreline Amphitheater
09.18.13 - Fitzroy, Australia - Laundry Bar
09.19.13 - Wellington, New Zealand - James Cabaret
09.20.13 - Auckland, New Zealand - The Studio
09.21-22.13 - Sydney, Australia - OutsideIn Festival
09.28.13 - Washington, DC - RFK Stadium Festival Grounds
10.04.13 - East Rutherford, NJ - Meadowlands Racetrack
