Bossanova! Chevy Nova!! Yes, dudes and dudettes: major league off-sluffing is back in town!!! Even though the man, like, just sat down on the couch, Kurt Vile’s comin’ back at’cha with his trademark schedule of unbelievably busy laziness. First, on November 8 Matador Records will be releasing a new EP from Vile titled So Outta Reach, featuring six new tracks from this year’s Smoke Ring for My Halo LP that were originally left off that release because of how next-level-tired they sounded (including a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Downbound Train”). The semantically exhausted new EP will be released digitally and on 12-inch vinyl.

Then, on November 9, Matador is rolling out the newly repackaged, deluxe double-CD version of Smoke Ring, which, conveniently enough, comes packaged with the new EP. You can preorder any and all of this stuff over at the Matablog, and you can also listen to EP track “The Creature” at the Chocolate Grinder… as soon as you’re able to un-stick yourself from the couch. Stupid dried hummus and honey… whatever, man.

So Outta Reach EP:

Los Campesinos! announce? new: album…

No one can seem to talk about Los Campesinos! without rambling about the effect of their exclamation point. Twee! Glee! Jubilee! OMG!

But wait — what if Los Campesinos! had chosen to punctuate their name differently? Los Campesinos? might be an avant-garde minimalist group that employs solely sitars and kazoos. Perhaps Los Campesinos; would be some sort of orchestral folk outfit, a 19-piece group that records all their songs in the forest. And possibly Los Campesinos/ would somehow manage to fuse psychedelic metal, dubstep, and reggae. Who knows?

The title of the exclamation-pointed band’s fourth LP Hello Sadness — an album that documents the frustration and confusion of a failing relationship — seems to send the band into emotional territory usually only found in the land of the comma, maybe even the darker ellipsis. You know… the land of lo-fi electro-emo and acoustic shoegaze. Somehow, however, Los Campesinos! manage to keep it quick and rollicking while remaining complex and honest — indie pop definitely worthy of an exclamation point.

So! Los Campesinos! Hello Sadness! Arts&Crafts! November 15!

Tracklisting:

01. By Your Hand
02. Songs About Your Girlfriend
03. Hello Sadness

06. Hate for the Island
07. The Black Bird, the Dark Slope
08. To Tundra

Wild Flag stream debut album on NPR, announce tour, kick ass, take names

What do The Beatles, The Ramones, and Neutral Milk Hotel all have in common? Influence, significance, innovation, all that jazz… but what about the fact that they’re all groups of guys? Sure, Sonic Youth, Arcade Fire, Belle and Sebastian, and The Decemberists all have female members, and The Velvet Underground did too back in the day, but why aren’t there more badass, all-female rock groups out there right now?

Enter Wild Flag, the supergroup consisting of Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney, Mary Timony of Helium, and Rebecca Cole of The Minders. They’re loud, raw, and clever — everything a rock band should be. After casually collaborating for over a decade, the foursome finally recorded their debut album back in April (completely live, save for the vocals), and the self-titled LP will see a September 13 release via Merge Records. The album can currently be streamed in full at NPR. Wild Flag has already played Chicago’s Wicker Park Festival and opened for Sonic Youth at Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn, but they’re also hitting the road for a string of North American dates in the fall.

New Order announce a two-show reunion, but Peter Hook opts out in favor of “just staying home and taking it easy”

As America guzzled down its eighth Bud Light and soaked up extreme levels of sunshine on its 88th annual Labor Day, New Order announced that they will be re-forming to play two shows in October. However, this reunion isn’t as complete as it could be: The Quietus is reporting that founding member Peter Hook will not be involved, but that keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, who has not played with the band in over 10 years, will be a part of the reformation.

Now, while excitement shoots up your spine following this groundbreaking news, let me temper it with harsh reality: New Order are not reuniting just to give Europeans better music to dance to but are instead hoping to raise money for their friend, filmmaker Michael Shamberg, who is currently very, very ill. Shamberg, for those who don’t know, directed a handful of New Order’s early music videos and should be very angry that his friend can’t help him out and just play a couple gigs.

Anyway, check out the dates below:

10.17.11 - Brussels, Belgium - Ancienne Belgique
10.18.11 - Paris, France - La Bataclan

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy releasing new album Wolfroy Goes to Town in October, leaving no room for anyone else in the New Releases bin

R. Kelly’s most ardent and hirsute fan, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, has something very special to share with his own fans on October 4 — a new full-length on Drag City! Wolfroy Goes to Town is its name, and 50 minutes of Oldham Audio is its game. This particular grouping of 10 earthy ditties features Emmett Kelly (who is essentially The Cairo Gang), Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Shahzad Ismaily, Danny Kiely, and Angel Olsen (who can write damn fine songs all on her own). The album will be available in the standard LP/CD/digital formats, though I’m still hoping for a wacky alternate option to emerge, like the “10-inch Ultraload” version of Beware or the wine stopper version of Wonder Show of the World.

Though it’s been a couple years since his last album, Beware (TMT Review), Bonnie has been dropping lower-key releases by the armfuls in the interim, including a series of 10-inches that all could have fit on 7-inches, sparking outrage among fans that are me. Though his full-length collaboration last year with The Cairo Gang may have warranted one or two of the “adult contemporary” jabs he’s had unjustly grumbled at him since roughly 2001, Oldham never turns in anything close to a tossed-off solo album, so any and all excitement for Wolfroy is hereby… authorized!

Wolfroy Goes to Town tracklisting:

01. No Match
02. New Whaling
03. Time to Be Clear
04. New Tibet
05. Black Captain
06. Cows
07. There Will Be Spring
08. Quail and Dumplings
09. We Are Unhappy
10. Night Noises
