Weezer’s contract with Geffen ends, but they haven’t gone indie just yet
By E. Nagurney on Apr 27 2010
Most love affairs eventually end. Geffen Records and Weezer have been looking all moon-eyed at each other for the past 16 years, ever since the former released the latter’s self-titled debut way back in 1994. With Weezer’s contract having ended last December, this fairytale love story seemed to have all but ended. (Personally, I give credit to Geffen for keeping it together and looking past Make Believe.) But, contrary to recent reports, the love affair isn’t over just yet. While an initial report by Billboard claimed that the group had already decided to “go independent,” an update claimed that re-signing with the label is still a possibility among a variety of other options.
However they end up releasing new music, Weezer do have a few plans on the horizon. In terms of strictly new music, the group has recorded a new song for the upcoming Shrek Forever After, which is definitely a new Shrek movie. In terms of older stuff, Weezer is compiling a collection of B-sides from throughout the group’s career for release later in the year. The band is also planning a deluxe edition of its 1996 album Pinkerton, an album some folks (like me) really like. Finally, the band has some tourdates scheduled.

Sun Kil Moon announce new album, Admiral Fell Promises
By Erika H on Apr 26 2010
Feeling sad? Then dry your tears until summer: Mark Kozelek, the man behind Red House Painters and subsequently Sun Kil Moon, recently announced on his website that the latter group will be coming out with a fourth album July 13 from Caldo Verde Records. Admiral Fell Promises will be available on CD, digitally, and vinyl, with some perks (two live bonus tracks) included in the latter.
Like his first and third albums, Admiral Fell Promises is all original material. However, if you’re yearning for more Kozelek covers since hearing his 2005 tribute to Modest Mouse (Tiny Cities), there’s even more good news. If you purchase Admiral Fell Promises straight from the Caldo Verde site, you’ll get I’ll Be There, a four-song EP including covers of classics from The Jackson 5 and Stereolab, and a cover of a track from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone’s latest album, Vs. Children.
Admiral Fell Promises tracklisting:
01. Ålesund
02. Half Moon Bay
03. Sam Wong Hotel
04. Third and Seneca
05. You Are My Sun
06. Admiral Fell Promises
07. The Leaning Tree
08. Australian Winter
09. Church of the Pines
10. Bay of Skulls
I’ll Be There tracklisting:
01. Third And Seneca (alt version)

Kelley Stoltz opening for Echo & The Bunnymen
By Annapocalypse on Apr 26 2010
Although singer/songwriter Kelley Stoltz has been around since 1999, Echo & The Bunnymen still have him beat by… oh, about 21 years or so. Just the length of an average college kid’s entire life thus far, no big deal. Still, with his successful career, Stoltz will be a fine opener for Echo. One piece of advice though, Kelley? Just don’t mention that you heard their song “The Killing Moon” for the first time in Donnie Darko. It will probably bum them out.
04.26.10 - Boston, MA - Paradise
04.27.10 - Fairfield, CT - Fairfield Theatre Company (Stage One)
04.28.10 - State College, PA - State Theater
04.30.10 - Washington, DC - Black Cat
05.01.10 - Peterborough, NH - The Glass Museum

Dark Night of the Soul (Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse) to be put on CDs and released in July — for real!
By Erika H on Apr 26 2010
There was no shortage of good collaborations last year, but nothing worked quite like Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse’s Dark Night of the Soul. First, there was the impressive list of featured guests (in order by track: Wayne Coyne, Gruff Rhys, Jason Lytle, Julian Casablancas, Black Francis, Iggy Pop, David Lynch, James Mercer, Nina Persson, Suzanne Vega, and Vic Chesnutt). Then there was the notable fashion of releasing the record: an audio-visual gallery installation, for starters, and a limited-edition art book alongside a blank CD-R for use “as you will” (the whole album was soon easily downloadable and has been available for streaming on NPR since last June).
Last spring, for complicated reasons (TMT News), EMI and Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse didn’t exactly work out. Now, almost a year later, Danger Mouse and EMI are talking again and have announced that Dark Night of the Soul is slated for official release worldwide in July. Tragically, Danger Mouse is working alone with EMI this time, in the wake of Sparklehorse a.k.a. Mark Linkous’s death this March. As is only fitting, Dark Night of the Soul will serve as a tribute to Linkous.
Danger Mouse stated: “I told Mark that we’d worked things out with EMI back in January and he was very happy that the album was finally going to be released this year. Mark meant a great deal to a lot of people and I’m grateful to have made music with him and to be a part of his legacy.”
Dark Night of the Soul is also shadowed by the death of Vic Chesnutt, who was featured on the eponymous song of the album and passed at the end of last year. The album is dedicated to his memory.
In happier news, David Lynch has assembled a collection of original photographs to add to the existing artwork for the album. At long last, Dark Night of the Soul — with music on the CD — will be available on July 13 in the US through Capitol Records (for the UK, July 12, via Parlophone/EMI).
