Everyone knows there is more than one way to skin a cat, but the very best way is to sit them down with a Lightning Bolt record. The lil’ critters just jump out of their skins listening to that befuddling mix of hissing, purring, trilling, meowing, growling, feral frenzy! Alas, Lightning Bolt albums are not the most frequent of species (last seen back in 2009), but cool cats and warm pussies everywhere will get the itch just thinking about the fact that the duo has announced a month-load of US shows. Brians Chippendale and Gibson hit American spaces both big and small beginning on March 31 in beautiful downtown Albany, New York and running through to the end of April.

Jonny Greenwood is either in Audioslave or Radiohead. I can’t remember which, so I’m just going to cover my bases and tell you that it’s either totally ludicrous or completely fitting that The Hollywood Reporter has, well, reported that the guitarist will provide the score for director Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Fans may remember Greenwood’s songs (or “music,” once again depending on which band he is in) playing underneath (or “scoring”) such once-and-future movies (or “films”) as There Will Be Blood and and Norwegian Wood. This new one stars Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, and Ezra Miller, and is currently being fixed in the mix (or “is in post-production”). Its story (or “plot”) follows the mother of a teen boy who went on a high-school killing spree as she tries to deal with her grief and feelings of personal responsibility, and it is tentatively set to be watched (or “premiered”) at the Cannes Film Festival later this year, according to twentyfourbit. Either way, one thing’s for sure: fans of Greenwood’s day job can look forward to either playing X-Box Live to this music or taking eco-friendly transportation to its theatrical release one day soon.
P.S. does anyone even know if Audioslave is even still a band? No WAY am I taking the time to look that shit up.
A special Valentine’s Day announcement: Radiohead are releasing their eighth album this Saturday! Titled The King of Limbs — named, presumably, after the hit sitcom The King of Queens — the album is available for pre-order now at the band’s website and will be made available on MP3/WAV the same day. There will also be a newspaper version released on May 9, which features 625 “tiny pieces of artwork,” two clear 10-inch vinyls, a CD, and more.
UPDATE: According to the group’s publicist, the digital release is on the band’s own Ticker Tape imprint, but the album will also see a more traditional release (CD/12-inch) March 28 via labels XL Recordings, TBD Records, and Hostess Entertainment.

The Flaming Lips have been in the news quite a bit lately, with a tour (including Soft Bulletin shows), a vinyl box set, a collaboration with Neon Indian, and a special project that will see them releasing a new song every month. And just today, Valentine’s Day, the day of fucking/fingering/sucking, the group has come through on the latter promise with the release of the appropriately-titled new track, “Two Blobs Fucking.”
The catch? The song is divided into 12 parts on YouTube, which means you need to have 11 friends if you want to hear it in its entirety. The second catch? They all need to have a cellphone (or laptop, I suppose) capable of handling a YouTube video. From the press release:
“Two Blobs Fucking” was created specifically for iPhone-type devices. Imagine the lo-fi symphonic joy that you, along with family, friends, pets, and others, will create at the touch of a button. The more devices, the more harmonic possibilities can be constructed. You and your device, at one with the music, become the orchestra, just as the Gods of Technology naturally intended it to be.
This sucks for me since I’m a loner with a shitty cellphone, but I’m guessing the rest of you will be able to easily round up some friends, family, and co-workers and have a little “Two Blobs Fucking” party. Actually, if you do end up finding enough people, can I come?

The last we heard from multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Shugo Tokumaru, he was dazzling many with his Beatles/Beach Boys-indebted pop songs and amazing all with his spectacular feat of playing 404 instruments simultaneously. No one has been able to capture the latter for YouTube scholars yet, but some say that if you wish hard enough and drink long enough, Tokumaru will appear to you in a vision as some sort of indie Vishnu, arms playing infinite banjos and tin whistles, kotos and wooden fish. I may be veering a tad too much into last night’s ether-induced dream, but it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of Tokumaru’s music. There is no denying his virtuosity with a good hundred-and-some (seriously) traditional and non-traditional Japanese instruments or his ability to pen effortlessly gorgeous pop tunes, as evidenced on his latest album, Port Entropy. Port Entropy is Tokumaru’s fourth album, his first since the exquisite 2008 set Exit, and will be available in North America via Polyvinyl on February 15 (the album was released last year in Japan on P-Vine). “Malerina,” a tasty tater from the album, can be found here.

High on Fire aren’t idiots. Although their fans may be known for getting rowdy and/or smoking substances out of “tobacco smoking devices,” the band themselves are smart enough to get the hell out of the country during winter and celebrate the last few months of Australia’s summer. They’re bringing the equally stoner-friendly Melvins on the road with them, just to insure that fun will be had down under. Both bands are also playing the Soundwave Festival in Australia, along with every band played on modern rock radio in 1999, including Monster Magnet, Queens of the Stone Age, Slayer, and Rob Zombie. High on Fire are touring in support of their recent album, Snakes for the Divine.
