As this past summer came and went, we were sprinkled with love and a little durty pop, as Lil B released I Forgive You, followed by the Black Flame mixtape in September. As season’s change, so do months, and here Lil B (street name: The Based God) has given us all another reason to, well, get based. When he’s not reflecting on how he feels about his adopted cat, he’s offering up free mixtape after free mixtape. The self-proclaimed “pretty bitch” has posted the latest mix up on DatPiff, so go get BASED! You’ll find there’s plenty of music for you to be cookin’ to — and we don’t mean that in a Breaking Bad kind of way.

Dan Treacy of Television Personalities in coma following surgery

Today, NME announced the shocking news that Dan Treacy, the lovable frontman of Television Personalities, is currently in an induced coma. Treacy recently underwent surgery to extricate a blood clot from his brain (a police investigation is “underway”) and has been in a coma now for roughly 48 hours.

His band members TexasBob Juarez, Mike Stone, and Arnau Obiols issued a statement: “The band is very much concerned for our dear friend and Brother Daniel at this time, and we are all praying for a recovery.”

Dan Treacy is now 51 years old. The most recent Television Personalities album, A Memory is Better Than Nothing, was released last year.

Paul Simon returns to Graceland for box set, tour, burlap sacks of cash

If you be his bodyguard, he can be your long-lost pal. He can call you Betty, and Betty, when you call him, you can call him Al. But whatever it is you call call him, next year marks the 25th anniversary of Paul Simon’s Grammy-winning 1986 album Graceland. In honor of the quarter-of-a-century mark, Simon just announced that Song Legacy will release a Graceland box set and… (djembe drum roll) …he will reunite Ladysmith Black Mambazo to tour behind it!

Heavily influenced by African mbaqanga music and recorded with local musicians in South Africa, the album is now a classic, and has influenced many young indie bands, most notably those rambunctious ivy league upstarts Vampire Weekend. The box set, which will be released in late spring (most likely May, but no promises!) will include a documentary by Joe Berlinger, director of Paradise Lost (about the West Memphis Three) and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (about a group of aging gorillas). Last July, Berlinger shot Simon’s concert in South Africa, where he performed with trumpeter Hugh Masekela and Ladysmith Black Mambazo for an intimate crowd of 300 people.

Simon told Billboard, “The documentary took me back to the artistic aspects and the political aspects of making Graceland and the controversy that surrounded it and how it was resolved, plus what remains of it and what we learn from it.” And for all of you keeping track out there, those lessons are: a) Apartheid is bad; b) Paul Simon is awesome; and c) Chevy Chase has some sweet dance moves.

Phil Manzanera’s collaboration with Lucho Brieva, Corroncho, due November 8 on disco compacto

Corroncho is a slightly pejorative name given by people from the Colombian capital of Bogota to people from the Caribbean coast. It’s also the title of Phil Manzanera’s forthcoming collaboration with Lucho Brieva! In 2003, the Roxy Music guitarist joined forces with the Colombian artist/sculptor after working on a Spanish version of “Complicada,” a song by Chrissie Hynde, lead singer of The Pretenders. The album’s 11 tracks follow the adventures of two Latin men while highlighting a number of social issues facing modern South America, and it features contributions from Robert Wyatt, Paul Thompson, Enrique Bunbury, Chrissie Hynde, Annie Lennox, Gilad Atzmon, and Aldo Lopez Gavilan, one of Cuba’s top pianists.

Corroncho will see a November 8 release, and opening track “Lowrider” is currently available as a free download.

Corroncho tracklisting:

01. Lowrider
02. Complicada
03. Rosa
04. Para Ti Nengon
05. Suavecito
06. Angeles Y Lobos
07. Esta Vida Prestada
08. Cancion Para La Que Sea
09. Noche De Putas
10. Coyote
11. Diario

Fra Lippo Lippi box set on Rune Grammofon delights superlatively passionate fans

From a musical standpoint, Norway is perhaps most recognized for its ever-frightening black metal scene, and to a lesser extent, its general contributions to jazz and electronic music. Given this fact, it’s easy to overlook the influence of Fra Lippo Lippi, the new wave band founded in Nesodden, Norway that was primarily active during the 1980s. The band’s charming and rather unintimidating (understatement) style garnered a significant following in the Philippines and elsewhere, and in 1988 they began a brief stint with Virgin Records. Now, Rune Grammofon, the label of Fra Lippo Lippi bassist Rune Kristoffersen, has released 4-CD and 6-LP box sets commemorating, well, more or less everything the band has ever formally recorded.

The 4-CD box set collects the last four studio albums, Songs (1985), Light and Shade (1987), The Colour Album (1989), and Dreams (1992), and comes in a limited edition of 1000. The 6-LP box set comes in 300 numbered copies on white vinyl and expands upon the CD collection to include all studio albums, including the band’s first two, In Silence (1981) and Small Mercies (1983). Both box sets include personal liner notes from Rune Kristoffersen and design by Magnus Voll Mathiassen. I’d venture to guess that the majority of these will be sold within a 15-mile radius of Manila.

Death Cab for Cutie get really “out there” and test their fans’ limits with remix EP featuring Cut Copy

I guess sometimes your stadium-sized, heart-on-sleeve, I-IV harmonizing songs about fucking/not fucking just can’t exhaust all that they have to say about the universality of love’s bitter mystery on first go-around. Or maybe it’s just that they didn’t think that we heard them loudly and clearly enough when they said the word “Eno” like two dozen times when discussing this past spring’s Codes and Keys LP (TMT Review) because it paired the guitars-per-song down to seven to make room for all the atmospherics.

But whatever the combination of these two (and only these two) reasons it must have been, the recession-proof Atlantic recording combo Death Cab for Cutie announced today the forthcoming release of the Keys and Codes Remix EP (see, the title is all mixed up and backwards!), a collection of seven remixed songs from Codes and Keys. Today, the band revealed the first of the batch on their website, “Doors Unlocked and Open” by Zooey Deschanel’s hair stylist/voice coach’s step-nephew’s favorite Roxy Music-influenced band Cut Copy. The very very long track is available now on iTunes.

The band has said they’ll release one remix every Monday leading up to the November 22 release of the whole enchilada. Your move, Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno.
