Marnie Stern to blow chillwave bands off their surfboards with new album in October

Guitar goddess Marnie Stern has grown sick of all those chillwave bands with their jangly riffs and lackadaisical attitudes populating her fans’ headphones this past year. To fight back, she will be releasing her third album, a self-titled affair, on October 5 via Kill Rock Stars. Teaming up once again with longtime cohort Zach Hill, Stern also brought along bassist Matthew Flegel (Women) and mixer Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta) for the recording process. The end result is… well, let’s see what Stern had to say about it via a press release: “It’s direct and honest and real. I’m no longer taking cover under guitar lines or yelping vocals.” So chill.

Check out the first track, “For Ash,” at the Chocolate Grinder.

Jimi Hendrix has gotten enough posthumous praise, so let’s give him a posthumous lawsuit! Former bandmate sues

As we all know, Jimi Hendrix is dead, and while his death has surely not curtailed his due praise and legacy, it has slowed any lawsuits against the former guitarist. However, slowed is not the same as stopped, as former saxophone-wielding bandmate Lonnie Youngblood has filed a lawsuit against Jimi, his Hendrix family estate, MCA Records, and director Martin Scorsese.

Youngblood’s case centers around the song “Georgia Blues,” which Hendrix and Youngblood wrote and recorded in the 60s, and appears on the Hendrix-centric volume of the Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues album series released in conjunction with the TV series of the same name. What Youngblood claims is that no one sought his approval for use of the track and that, consequently, as the owner of the copyright on the song, he must defend the copyright that he owns.

According to the Associated Press, court documents state that the Hendrix Family Estate offered Youngblood $3,000 dollars for the rights, with Youngblood refusing and stating that, “It’s the principle, I want my song back. They had no right to take my song.” The lawsuit is seeking an unspecified amount of lost-income damages and claims that Youngblood released the song himself through the internet and that it received a copyright in 2002.

Low, Boredoms, and Dead Meadow get spiritual at Melbourne Festival

If Beck’s lager is known for anything, it’s the cool, refreshing taste of spirituality. Well that’s the premise, at least, behind the Beck’s Festival Bar lineup at the Melbourne Festival in Australia this October. And honestly, what a cool premise it is! The performances focus around the ideas of shamanism and “music as a religious experience,” with featured artists including Boredoms, Mariachi El Bronx, Dead Meadow, Low, Dengue Fever, and Sri Lankan metal band Stigmata, along with spades of Australian bands. Contributing to the atmosphere will be Melbourne-based design duo tin&ed, who will be decking the Forum Theatre out in something called Holygrams, to fill the “many nooks, crannies, and archways of the Forum Theatre. This collection of handmade shrines, built on layers of relics, found objects, and offerings reveals the many facets of worship in pop culture, iconic artists, and underground musical heroes.” All nights will cost ya $20.

Here’s the lineup:

Boredoms, Kes Band, Bum Creek, Dead Meadow, Stigmata, Blarke Bayer/Black Widow, Sage Francis (w/ special guest B. Dolan), Dexter, Horrorshow, Dengue Fever, The Break, Johnnie and The Johnnie Johnnies, Low, Pikelet, Ponzu Island, The Drones, P.K.14, The Twerps, Mariachi El Bronx, Eagle & The Worm, and The Ukeladies

!!! go on tour in support of Strange Weather, Isn’t It?, even though I haven’t listened to them since 2005

A lot’s changed since the days when you were expected to give a shit about “dancepunk” outfit !!!. For instance, did you know that the band now consists of frontman Nic Offer, guitarist Mario Andreoni, horn player/keyboardist Daniel Gorman, and saxophonist/percussionist Allan Wilson, with vocalist Shannon Funchess (of Light Asylum) and drummer Paul Quattrone (of Modey Lemon) rounding out the current live band? No? Me neither, because I haven’t really listened to !!! since 2005.

And did you further know that they’ve been making records (er, once in a great while, at least) this whole time, and that Warp is dropping their newest one, Strange Weather, Isn’t It? on August 24? (You can stream, download, or watch the video for the lead single “AM/FM” here; I bet it sounds dancy.) Did you maybe hear about how it was was recorded in Berlin, New York, and Sacramento? Or how it was co-produced by the band along with Eric Broucek, who is the former house engineer for DFA Records. No? Me neither, because I haven’t really listened to !!! since 2005.

And how about the fact that !!! are going on a WORLD motherfuckin’ TOUR in support of this new album? Did you find that online by google-searching “!!!”? (Oh, wait, you can’t even do that). Well, did you maybe hear that earlier from someone? No? Me neither, because I don’t really know anyone who’s listened to !!! since 2005. But jeez, look at all those dates down there. Let’s hope that someone’s been listening.

Nick Lowe rereleases “trilogy” on vinyl, tours North America with full band, audience wonders how Elvis Costello got so handsome all of a sudden

For the first time this millenium, England’s pied pub piper Nick Lowe will drag himself and his rambleshamble backing band (I don’t think they have a proper name, so we’ll just call them the New Lowes) across these United States. What can audiences expect from a pop superbrain who hasn’t tread upon our shores since the burst of the dot-com bubble? Well, I suspect he’ll cull a lot of material from his acclaimed trilogy of albums that started with 1994’s The Impossible Bird, Empire Strikes Backed with 1998’s Dig My Mood, and finished strong with 2001’s charming The Convincer. It just so happens that all three of these albums will be released on vinyl for the first time on September 21 through Yep Roc. You kids still like all them wax stacks, right? Lowe, you silver slicked bastard, you’ve done it again for the first time!

Efterklang: totally coming to (North) America on tour

Danish indie rockers Efterklang are, like the Neil Diamond song of the same name, coming to (North) America. They’re touring in support of their most recent album, Magic Chairs (TMT Review), out now on 4AD. This is where the similarities to Neil Diamond end… or do they? (I hear Neil likes chairs… if you know what I mean. Wait, what the hell are you thinking of? I meant to sit on. Weirdo.)
