Matana Roberts announces European solo tour dates

Four years and three albums into her 12-part exploration of the African American experience and cultural heritage via jazz, Matana Roberts will be heading to Europe next October for a short fall tour. The Chicago-born, New York-based artist will be presenting her recent Coin Coin Chapter Three: river run thee album, performing without the support of a band yet combining field recordings and electronic effects with her vocals and saxophone, in the poetic-reverie style of the Coin Coin series.

One of the most promising young talents in experimental music today, Roberts has been active since the early 2000s and is a member of the AACM. She’s released eight albums and featured in countless projects as a studio musician (Sticks and Stones, Burnt Sugar, TV on the Radio, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra), but is best known for her acclaimed Coin Coin series. Devised as a panoramic visit to the mystical roots of African American music, this epic series is one of the very few works of art we would not hesitate to call important today, and a consistent feature in our favorites lists.
