Merge Records does the neighborly thing, signs Hospitality to make things more hospitable

Ever had sloppy maid service at a 5-star hotel? Or suffered an excruciatingly long wait while a timid bellboy failed to hail you a cab? Well, we’ve gotta figure that’s how Hospitality was feeling before getting signed to Merge Records. The New Yorkers join a roster that includes Wild Flag and Eleanor Friedberger, both of whom they’ll join at the Bowery Ballroom later this fall.

With singer Amber Papini’s Psychedelic Furs-influenced singing, a tinge of the bittersweet, and sweet arrangements that play around with keyboards, horns, synths, and layered guitars, Hospitality are on track for providing friendly and pleasant sounds. That’s much more than we can say about those weak front desk receptionists at the Holiday Inn. With production by Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells), the band’s debut full-length, due in early 2012, is one to keep an eye on.
