Midlake tour starts really soon (today!), goes on for ages, and ends in distant future

The heavily bearded Texan rockers Midlake are kicking off their latest tour any minute now. Seriously, if you live in Arizona and you catch this article as soon as it goes live, there’ll be plenty of time to cancel all your plans and make it to the show tonight at Plush in Tucson. The rest of you don’t have to jump off the couch just yet, but Midlake will surely be in your area at some point. The almost four-month-long tour is set to cover most of the US, and the band will get a bit of northern exposure from a couple of Canadian dates.

The tour follows the release of their latest album on Bella Union, The Courage of Others (TMT Review), which our own Jason P. Woodbury declared “the first great record of 2010.” With such a ringing TMT endorsement, you’d better double-check the dates below.

Fol Chen to Tour with Liars, Phantom-Tour with Radiohead

L.A. robo-pop collective Fol Chen had a pretty serendipitous 2009 after releasing their debut album of ironic-or-is-it? Jackson family junkyard jams, Part One: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made, on Asthmatic Kitty. They made a few videos, covered Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” for Spin’s Purplish Rain compilation and Pink Floyd’s “In The Flesh” for Mojo’s tribute to The Wall, got the green-light for white adults to like them from NPR, and were promptly remixed by several of those white adult converts… including those old geezers in Liars, who were tuning in for Car Talk, but instead heard Fol Chen on accident.

Now, in some crazy George Costanza-esque upping of the ante, Liars are continuing to pretend like they were into Fol Chen (and not hot 1985 Toyota 4x4s) all along and are taking them on their US tour this spring. And yes, by proxy, this makes them phantom-touring partners with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. Hmm… NPR? Radiohead? Yeah, NOW you’re on board, aren’t you, you old geezer?

Fol Chen with Liars:

04.10.10 - Los Angeles, CA - El Rey
04.14.10 - Washington, DC - Rock N Roll Hotel
04.15.10 - New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom
04.16.10 - Philadelphia, PA - First Unitarian Church
04.17.10 - Boston, MA - Paradise Lounge

05.01.10 - Seattle, WA - Neumos

Glenn Branca releases sequel to The Ascension

The Glenn Branca Ensemble has released a new album this month, entitled The Ascension: The Sequel. It is out via Branca’s own label, Systems Neutralizers, and as the title suggests, the 52-minute album will serve as the sequel to his 1981 “hit” The Ascension (TMT DeLorean Review). You can purchase it exclusively at Amazon for the time being.

The group, also known as Sonic Youth’s dad, will be performing in New York and, err, Austria as part of a short 2010 “tour.” But wait, I thought the end of music was here?

The Ascension: The Sequel tracklisting:

01. Lesson No. 3 (Tribute to Steve Reich)
02. The Tone Row That Ruled The World
03. Carbon Monoxide
04. Quadratonic
05. The Blood
06. Lost Chords

LCD Soundsystem confirms May release for new album ლ(`・◡・´ლ)

Earlier this week, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy tweeted about how a new album is now complete and will be sent to the one, the only, the often very sexy Mr. Bob Weston (Shellac, Vocano Suns) for mastering. Here’s the exact quote: “mixing last song right now to send to the amazing bob weston to master. meaning, record DONE. i hope people like it.”

So when’s it coming out? A bunch of webzines and blogs have speculated March, with a few outlets reporting April, BUT THEY HAVE SPECULATED INCORRECTLY, MY FRIENDS. According to the one, the only, the often very sexy MOG, Murphy has confirmed a May release for the album.

So, what does all of this mean? Well, isn’t it obvious? James Murphy needs to be more clear about his release dates or he’ll lose his fanbase entirely. Step up your game, S’Murphy: a release date needs to be set before you master an album. Oh, and you should probably title the album, too. FYI.

Subscribe to Southern Lord! Get Vinyl In Your Mailbox! Black Metal!

I worked at a record store for five years, and one of the most annoying things about the job was that whenever Southern Lord put out a new release on vinyl, I always ended up telling customers that we either didn’t get the vinyl or that it had already sold out, because, seriously, Southern Lord presses maybe ten copies of each record they put on wax.

Hey, maybe all those people I turned away should sign up for Southern Lord’s vinyl subscription series!

The record label, made famous by releasing music by the blackest of black-hearted metal men (who aren’t usually black), has offered 550 spots for 550 lucky Southern Lord fans. For a nominal, onetime fee, those lucky 550 people will receive seven (7!) vinyl records in the mail by such bands as Pelican, Black Cobra, and Ascend. The records will also contain bonus tracks unavailable on any other officially released version of each album, as well as a slip-mat by “a well-known artist.” Ooooo! Well-known artists!

Further information can be found at The first level of Hell.

k-os tours with Drake; the worlds of Drake and Broken Social Scene inch ever-closer

For my next trick, I will connect the seemingly disparate worlds of Canadian indie rock heroes Broken Social Scene and (also Canadian) hip-hop hitmaker Drake in a mere two moves.

1. Broken Social Scene’s self-titled album (TMT Review) contained the track “Windsurfing Nation” featuring a guest verse from rap veteran k-os.

2. k-os will be going on tour this April with hitmaker/Degrassi superstar Drake.

And there you are! Of course, there’s a lot more worth knowing about k-os than his association with Broken Social Scene. For one, the man’s released four full-length albums, the latest of which, Yes!, saw release this past Tuesday, which was preceded with an appearance the day before on BET co-hosting a “Black History Month” episode of The Deal. Of course, all of this leads up to his role opening for Drake on his “Away From Home Tour,” which hits up a number of college campuses in hopes of promoting eco-friendly technology. Drake and k-os: a couple of guys who care! Now, if only they could get through to that dastardly Broken Social Scene crew. Bunch of hearts of stone over there.

k-os solo dates:

03.02.10 - New York, NY - Le Poisson Rouge
03.04.10 - Los Angeles, CA - The Roxy

04.06.10 - Charleston, IL - Eastern Illinois University
