It's a family affair: Molly Drake, mother of Nick, gets an album release

Some people just have coolness in their genes. You know these people. They have Cool Moms. They have Cool Dads. They have the most coveted type of family: artsy parents who bought them Kraftwerk records and get drunk with their offspring on their own special recipe holiday cocktails. The natural response here is to hate and envy these families. But today, let’s take a moment to applaud them, and one English family in particular: the Drakes, of Nick Drake fame.

See, Nick Drake had a Cool Mom. Molly Drake was also a Hot Mom and a Creative Mom. (Some people, geez.) Her influence on Nick Drake’s career is evident in her soft and melancholy home recordings, which are now being released on Squirrel Thing Recordings. The self-titled collection of previously unreleased tracks was recorded at the Drake family home by Molly’s husband Rodney in the 1950s, and was restored by engineer John Wood for the CD release. (Wood also worked with Nick himself.) The album features family photos, a letter-pressed jacket, and a biography by daughter Gabrielle Drake. Available on March 5, you can also take a sneak peek at the Molly Drake Bandcamp page.

RIP: Richard Street of The Temptations

From Spinner:

Former Motown vocalist Richard Street, a member of the Temptations for 25 years, has died. He was 70.

Street’s wife, Cindy, says her husband died early Wednesday at a hospital in Las Vegas after a short illness.

Richard Street sang as a young man with Temptations members Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin, but didn’t join the famed Motown group until the early 1970s. He later made the move from his native Detroit to Los Angeles with other Motown acts and stayed with the group until the mid-1990s.

Ashley Paul drops remix of the first track off Line the Clouds, Pete Swanson helps it not rock at all (in the best way possible)

What do you get when you combine a woman with talent and a man with potential? Apparently, the answer is some kind of test tube-born goddess of avant-noise meanderings, embodied, in this case, as Ashley Paul’s track “Soak the Ocean.” This remix is of the first track off her forthcoming album entitled Line the Clouds. For most of the piece, guest artist Pete Swanson’s tendrils of distortion almost overpower Ashley Paul’s vocal and instrumental wanderings, blowing open her typically more personal style. Her softly plinking strains and hushed vocals have been blasted through the wardrobe and into an uncertain landscape of strange, wavering noise.

Treat yourself to a walk through it below, or take your chances when Line the Clouds comes out on Eli Keszler’s Rel Records March 26.

RT @aimeemann and @tedleo collaborate, form new group #BOTH

In what might be one of the more left-field collaborations in recent memory, occasional Academy Award nominee Aimee Mann and occasional Shorty award nominee Ted Leo are getting together to form Twitter-friendly band #BOTH. Before you ask, yes, the hashtag is apparently part of the name. While both are frequently on the road, they recently finished their first collaborative tour, and things must have gone well. On the heels of that tour, Mann’s website is reporting the news of their new project along with some live dates. The duo will reportedly be “showcasing songs they have written together as well performing some of their own original material.” There isn’t really a whole lot of other info so keep an eye on their respective websites for updates. No album details, no other tourdates.

In addition to all that, if you want to hear how the gears in Mann’s brain spin, check out her appearance on the February 21 episode of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.

#BOTH dates:

03.08.13 - Los Angeles, CA - Largo
03.09.13 - Los Angeles, CA - Largo
03.26.13 - San Francisco, CA - Bottom of the Hill

Laurel Halo declared innocuous to the public, announces new EP on Hyperdub, European live dates

Looking back upon my giddy hyping-up of Quarantine (TMT Review) prior to its release, it’s worth offering a statement as to whether or not my giddiness remained, post-listen. The answer, as you wait with bated breath, is… HMMMPH? — RRRRR, PHH, AHHHH, K. Without spiraling into verbosity, my opinion is basically this: Quarantine is one hell of a grower of an album, and repeated listens should be enforced at the careful urging of knife-holding Hyperdub officials. I’m not sure I have the time nor the capacity to truly grasp all that Halo was going for, but does she care? Apparently not!

Halo’s next project of art pop abstraction is already set for release, as new EP Behind the Green Door will see the light of day more or less concurrent with a series of European live dates, listed below. The exact date (beyond “April”) of the EP’s release has yet to be revealed, so keep an eye on her or Hyperdub’s website. Or we might announce it. I can’t predict these things.

Behind the Green Door tracklisting:

04. Sex Mission

Sun City Girls’ Alan Bishop announces album with new project The Invisible Hands, blows minds with Zen koan

“What is the sound one hand clapping?” asks the traditional Zen koan. “What is the sound of two hands that are totally invisible clapping?” asks Alan Bishop, he of Sun City Girls, Alvarius B., and Sublime Frequencies, to the collective gasp and then stunned silence of pretty much everyone within earshot. That’s right, Alan Bishop just blew your mind.

Pull yourself together. Like with all good koans, there’s more: Alan Bishop is gearing up to release an album with his new band The Invisible Hands on Abduction Records. The self-titled debut is an 11-song collection of psychedelic folk that follows in the more melodic footsteps of 2011’s Alvarius B. record, Baroque Primitiva (TMT Review).

Having trotted the globe in search of new sun cities in which to lay his head, Bishop’s new band hails primarily from Egypt. Aside from Bishop himself, members of The Invisible Hands are all residents of Cairo, including Cherif El Masri and Aya Hemeda of the Egyptian group Eskenderella, and drummer Magued Nagati. The Invisible Hands also features contributions from other players around the Cairo scene, including Sam Shalabi on the oud and Mohamed Medhat on the violin and viola.

Though Bishop wrote these 11 songs in English, the album was recorded twice: once in English and once in Arabic. The English version is out March 19. At first, the Arabic version will only be sold in the Middle East, though there are plans to make both versions available for digital download, and eventually package them together as a limited-edition double LP. Listen to the album’s first single, “Soma,” here:

The Invisible Hands tracklist:

01. The Same

04. Dark Hall
05. Black Weather Shoes
06. Soma
07. My Skull
08. Nice on Ice
