The Clientele to Star in Next Season of Rock of Love, Quietly Tour the United States

God, how I hate the quiet. I feel weird without the radio or TV on in the background. I think the sound of sirens when I’m falling asleep at night is strangely reassuring. So, logically, I shouldn’t like The Clientele. But ohhhh how I do. And that’s why it’s absolutely fantastic to hear that the men and woman of The Clientele will be swinging stateside to promote their latest, Bonfires on the Heath (TMT Review), a critically-acclaimed Galaxie-500-meets-The-Zombies gem of pastoral British indie pop.

White Stripes Get Apology from Songwriter Accused of Plagiarizing for Superbowl Ad

Did you watch the Super Bowl? I didn’t, because I was at work. Also, I don’t really care for football. Jack and Meg White (or someone associated with them), however, were apparently watching the game and noticed something awfully odd about the Air Force Reserve’s new commercial. Namely, the fact that the ad is soundtracked by a song awfully similar to The White Stripes’ hit “Fell In Love With A Girl.” How similar? Well, judge for yourself: the Air Force Reserve ad can be seen here (via The Huffington Post) and the “Fell In Love With A Girl” video can be seen here. The Stripes’s website has a side-by-side comparison, but the Air Force Reserve has removed the ad from their website since the controversy.

Along with the comparison, the band’s website displays a statement from the group about the song’s usage.

We believe our song was re-recorded and used without permission of the White Stripes, our publishers, label or management. The White Stripes take strong insult and objection to the Air Force Reserve presenting this advertisement with the implication that we licensed one of our songs to encourage recruitment during a war that we do not support.

Since the controversy’s inception, Kem Kraft, composer of the Air Force Reserve ad’s song, has responded to the Stripes’ accusation. “I’m sorry it sounds the same. It wasn’t my intention, truly, truly, truly,” the composer told The New York Times. Kraft also took responsibility for the song’s existence, saying that “as far as I’m concerned, I’m responsible. Just me.” And in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said “I don’t even listen to those guys.”

Mike Lee, owner of Fast Forward Productions, the company responsible for the ad, also made a statement to The New York Times. “I wasn’t familiar with the White Stripes song. I’ve heard of the White Stripes but I’m not a listener of theirs. I had no idea there was similarity until after the fact.”

Ocrilim Self-Releases CD Trilogy

Most everything that involves Mick Barr — Ocrilim, Octis, Orthrelm — reaches a new level of maximalism (his Ov release as Orthrelm just made our decade list). So, it’s not surprising that he has just self-released three discs of brand new material as Ocrilim — maximum indeed! The albums — Ixoltion, Sacreth, Hymns — come in a very primitive, minimal packing, containing music mostly from 2007, which was around the recording of Annwn (TMT Review). The CDs will only be available until Barr decides to stop making them, so hurry up and buy them all now.

All three discs can be purchased for the low price of $25 (or each can be bought separately for $10 a piece) by sending money straight to the man himself. Visit Ocrilim’s MySpace for more details.

Last One In Is a Rotten Fake-Dreadlocked Corpse: Caribou to Return for an April Swim

What was it that Van Morrison said? Something about, if he was a gunslinger, “There’d be a lot of dead copycats about.” Now, don’t think we are condoning the slaying of “dude from Counting Crows” (but DO feel free to pistol-whip him if he should pass by your bus stop), but Van the Man has a point, up to a point. Poor imitators are depressing but inevitable; unoriginal, unauthentic, space-wasters are even more stomach-churning than copycats. That’s why we love to report news on genre-bustin’ mavericks like one man grandstand Dan Snaith, or Caribou as he has been known for the last six years.

Caribou returns with a new album on April 20 called Swim via Merge Records (City Slang elsewhere, April 19). By all accounts and recent appearances (culminating in the free-for-all Vibration Ensemble performances September past), Snaith will be leaping onto unchartered dancefloors this year. I’m no Nostradumbass, but after hearing Swim’s leadoff track “Odessa,” I predict a different, still amazing Caribou this year, one who is not only, in his own words, attempting to find his “own sonic vocabulary,” but one who is heck-bent on shaking titties and moving moobs. You can stream the track at the Chocolate Grinder.

Istanbul, not Constantinople. Caribou, not Manitoba.
