Even though an Asian expansion would mean increased access to one of the world’s best experimental electronic music festivals, let’s all be objectively grateful that MUTEK hasn’t gone the way of ATP and started throwing together names and locations and confused us to the point where we end up travelling to Munich for a German rendition of “Technicolor Dreamcoat” (Jupp and his). Instead, the premier event maintains its annual occurrence in Montreal, and excluding a bevy of showcases in South America, Barcelona, and elsewhere, the other MUTEK gig of comparable significance is MUTEK Mexico, which began three years after MUTEK Montreal in 2003. Residents and those reasonably inclined to make the trip to Mexico City: grab a drool bowl.

The initial lineup for this year’s edition of MUTEK Mexico has just been announced, and it includes the following artists: Alessandro Cortini, Shackleton, Voices from the Lake, Lucrecia Dalt, Lotic, Vatican Shadow, Lee Gamble (with visuals from Dave Gaskarth), Atom™ & Tobias, Clark, and DJ Koze. At least one of those former members of Nine Inch Nails is releasing a new album soon, and something similar can be said about those talented aquatic schizos.

Check out the full initial lineup at the link below. Early bird tickets are on sale here, and I really can’t imagine anyone having anything better do in late October. Shirk your leaf-raking duties.

Meanwhile, check out our special MUTEK interviews featuring Karen Gwyer & Strategy and Atom™ & Tyondai Braxton.
