If you have eyes and an internet connection, you’ve already seen that Trent Reznor has done his best Dr. Frankenstein impression and resurrected the still-fresh corpse of Nine Inch Nails. Cue eye rolls, angry fanboys, and the vast majority of people going “wait Nine Inch Nails had stopped?”

Well, yes, but even when he was slipping away into soundtrack work and Mariqueen Maandig’s How to Destroy Angels, Trent Reznor never really fell completely into the void. With the recent revelation that we’ve been lied to, albeit beautifully, Trent Reznor has confirmed he does not have the discipline to stay away from Nine Inch Nails. It must be like a bodily function at this point; he has to put out music or he’ll self-destruct.

This time, the chosen vessel for Reznor’s always somewhat damaged musical offerings seems to be pop. A new album, Hesitation Marks has been announced for a September 3 release date, and the new single, “Came Back Haunted,” showcases hooks that sink even deeper than anything off of The Slip.

NIN is taking this new flesh out on a massive tour, with two of the most interesting bands you could need, dream, or find: Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Explosions in The Sky. Just like you imagined, promises have been made to top everything that Nine Inch Nails have done before. That combination of acts and hype certainly deserves some raised eyebrows and perhaps a tiny little dot of incredulity, but the tickets are going on sale June 14, so they can’t turn back now, even if they wanted to.

Who knows if Trent Reznor really intends this mode of Nine Inch Nails to last or if this is for right now. Does it matter? The perfect little goth/industrial dream of the 90s is back, and isn’t that what you really wanted?

Noise rap group .clipping reaches perfect amplitude for Sub Pop reps, ready two LPs for 2014

Contributing to TMT’s already stellar reputation as a vessel for artists entering lives where they can afford weekly grocery trips, clipping., the rap outfit with the noisy peripherals, has just signed with Sub Pop, following the release of their Eureka!-earning, self-released album Midcity (TMT Review) earlier this year — and, not to mention, a performance at our very own Unisex Earplug showcase at this year’s SXSW. Christening their newfound label relationship, the trio of Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Snipes, and William Huston will be performing at Silver Jubilee next month, and their label debut is scheduled for release sometime in 2014, followed or preceded by another full-length for Deathbomb Arc. Exact dates are contingent upon when Diggs cares to once again remind us, through the use of an oversized megaphone, “It’s clipping., bitch.”

Entirely different utilizations of harshness separate clipping. from the more unhinged and confrontational Death Grips, and so do the former’s clear lyrical references to contemporary rap motifs. This may or may not be a good thing, depending on how seriously you take things like a roughly 10-minute expose on the vocal fluctuations contained in the phrase “GET MONEY” or talk of a “Rolex with more diamonds than gears,” but maybe future releases will see a decrease in this approach and more tracks like Midcity cut “bout.that,” which you can hear in their new video:

To be sure, the references are here too, but a certain depth to the song, as well as the full-blown 90s-esque style to the video, seems to suggest that the lyrics are all in homage to the genre. Or, who knows? Maybe the band’s history with “yay,” as it were, has yet to be revealed…

Jim O’Rourke schedules six consecutive career-spanning shows in Tokyo, new orchestral pop LP (still) almost done

Q: Hey Jim, you’ve just scheduled a personally unprecedented six consecutive days of shows at Tokyo’s SuperDeluxe, with each day focusing on a specific part of your extensive musical oeuvre. Although you rarely perform under your own name, you’re heavily involved in gigs around the city, and had the previously-scheduled ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror Japan not been cancelled, you would’ve performed Eureka in its entirety on the day you were scheduled to also curate. Clearly, you have deep interest in the live experience. Why don’t you tell us about it?

A: If I didn’t have to ever play a show again, I’d be happy.

Q: Oh. Well… alright, next question. Your musical versatility and contributions to a range of genres can hardly be overstated. Many of us know you through your work with Sonic Youth, but the number of collaborations (here’s a recent one) that you’ve been involved with, as well as a your solo work, is a testament to your diverse talent and ongoing penchant for innovation. Could you elaborate on your apparent interest in testing the limits of the instruments you use?

A: I don’t understand liking your instrument, it’s just a pain-in-the-ass thing you have to use in order to do what you want to do. Having an interest in your instrument — I don’t understand it, it just makes no sense to me. Why don’t you just stay home and caress it and stuff? Why are you playing for people?

Brian Wilson, subject of the popular Barenaked Ladies song, begins work on his 11th solo album

The Barenaked Ladies, the household-name Canadian group known for such hits as “If I Had $1,000,000” and “One Week,” have left a lasting impression on popular music. Though it would take much more than the confines of this short news post to even summarize their influence, surely one of their greatest contributions was to cast light on the almost-lost-to-history pop stylings of Brian Wilson with their song “Brian Wilson.” Wilson, of course, was a founding member of cult-group The Beach Boys. The Beach Boys only recently released their 29th studio album, That’s Why God Made Radio, an album that was a biting indictment of the radio and record industries, who for some reason never really embraced The Beach Boys, though the band does have a small but devoted fan base.

Looking to jump on the publicity firestorm surrounding BNL’s latest release Grinning Streak, Wilson has announced he’s begun work on his own solo album, his first of all original material since 2008’s That Lucky Old Sun (TMT Review). He says that playing with The Beach Boys on their 50th anniversary tour both filled his head up with new ideas and reminded him that he still probably had some BNL-cred to cash in. The as-yet-untitled release will be his 11th solo project. He’ll be joined by Beach Boys co-founders Al Jardine and David Marks as well as a whole host of friends-cum-BNL superfans such as Jeff Beck, Don Was, and Jim Keltner. The album will be out on Capitol Records, the label that released the first Beach Boys records way back before the dawn of time and who really missed the boat on The Barenaked Ladies. Wilson will also be playing a short tour in late July (with one date in October), joined by Jardine and Marks. The Barenaked Ladies are also touring this summer. Be sure to head out and catch both if you can, and take your dad if he’s around!

David Lynch follows up Crazy Clown Time with The Big Dream. Instead of a new movie :(

A few days ago, renowned filmmaker David Lynch decided to branch out his social media presence and signed up for new “it” service Vine. He promptly posted a video simply, and appropriately, titled “Another mystery-” (cue spooky sound effects). Because this is 2013 and most people tend their work days on Twitter and/or over analyzing celebrity tweets Lynch’s post stirred up some press coverage. Was it a teaser for a new film? Is he developing a web series? None of the above! The post was, in fact, a teaser for his forthcoming record!

Save the date, because on July 16 The Big Dream will be available digitally, on CD, and on LP from the fine people at Sacred Bones in the US and Sunday Best in Europe. Dream is the follow up to Lynch’s 2011 debut Crazy Clown Time and another exercise in what Lynch calls “modern blues.” Apparently, Lynch considers the music “modern blues” not necessarily because of the sound, but because of the songwriting process: “Most of the songs start out as a type of blues jam and then we go sideways from there. What comes out is a hybrid, modernized form of low-down blues” (via Sunday Best’s press release). Either way, expect a lot of reverb drenched guitars, processed vocals, and pounding drums. Eleven of the 12 tracks were penned by Lynch himself, once again featuring engineer Dean Hurley contributing additional instrumentation and handling production duties, with the odd track being a cover of the Bob Dylan song “The Ballad of Hollis Brown.” It remains to be seen if any of the quasi-dance pop is going to make the cut on the new record.

The album also includes a “bonus” track. Swedish singer/songwriter Lykke Li joins Lynch for a cut titled “I’m Waiting Here.” The song will be available as a same-day download with all three formats of the album. Those committed enough to buy the 2xLP set will also get the Li song on the A-side and a Lynch-penned etching on the B-side. The song features Li on vocals and is only a few degrees removed from the Lady in the Radiator song (or any of the stuff from Blue Velvet).
