Chicago MC Noname (Fatimah Warner) had actually announced her Telefone mixtape four years ago without a specified release date, so imagine the surprise of fans who had previously witnessed (and were blown away by) her Chance the Rapper affiliation when said mixtape finally saw the light of a graciously free release this past summer. The mixtape was one of our favorites for the month of August, and it furthers your appreciation if you acknowledge the stated goals around the time of its initial formulation: it’s “meant to feel like you’re talking to someone you like on the phone for the first time, exploring their likes and dislikes, dreams and aspirations, and their ideas about the world around them.” And so it did in lieu of me actually talking on the phone, since I only do that when the online ordering system is down for the local pizza place.
The “dreams and aspirations” of Noname fans continue to be fulfilled, because she’s just announced her very first headlining tour in support of the aforementioned Telefone.
