Odd Future announce series of West Coast riots

Odd Future announce series of West Coast riots http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/news-11-05-odd-future.jpg

Odd Future, who are certainly controversial and definitely young, have announced that, in addition to their already announced gigs in Europe and Australia, they will be spending a little time in California spreading the joy of riots and reveling in the attention they so desperately crave as bored teenagers in America.

Already planning for wave after wave of teenage rebellion and angry GLAAD members, the quiet California towns of Indio, San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have already boarded their windows and locked up their daughters.

Odd Future, who just completed a set at Spain’s Primavera Sound over the weekend in support of Tyler, The Creator’s recent Goblin (TMT Review), have already taken to Twitter and offered up a series of “artistic and praise-worthy” tweets that attempt to show (falsely) that overly violent and tasteless lyrics about raping women and murdering people is creative. Seriously, it sucks when ICP do it, it sucked when it was all that mainstream rap talked about, and it sucks now. But feel free to buy into the hype at one of the following shows.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor say new material is being discussed; music journalists desperate for discussion transcripts

According to a report on Pitchfork, recently-reunited cult-favorites Godspeed You! Black Emperor have begun working on new material.

The post-rock blockbusters, who reunited last year for an aptly titled Reunion Tour, revealed (through bandmember Bruce Cawdon and an interview with Montreal’s Voir magazine) that the band will convene after the end of their July tour to discuss the logistics and creativistics of a new album.

The important details, such as a release date or record label, have yet to be revealed, but music journalists (such as myself) are already fighting in bare-knuckle cage matches for the right to learn the juicy details of this highly anticipated project.

RIP: Gil Scott-Heron

From NPR Music:

Gil Scott-Heron died Friday afternoon in New York. He was 62. The influential poet and musician is often credited with being one of the progenitors of hip-hop, and is best known for the spoken-word piece “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.”

Scott-Heron was born in Chicago in 1949. He spent his early years in Jackson, Tenn., attended high school in The Bronx, and spent time at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University before settling in Manhattan. His recording career began in 1970 with the album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, which featured the first version of “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” The track has since been referenced and parodied extensively in pop culture.

Scott-Heron continued to record through the 1970s and early ’80s, before taking a lengthy hiatus. He briefly returned to the studio for 1994’s Spirits. […] He has been cited as a key influence by many in the hip-hop community — such as rapper-producer Kanye West, who closed his platinum-selling 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy with a track built around a sample of Scott-Heron’s voice. […] He began performing again after his release in 2007, and in 2010 released a new album, I’m New Here, to widespread critical acclaim.

Sun Araw carves new record Ancient Romans using only his hands and a slab of gorgeous marble, goes on tour to cool down

Let’s get the basics out of the way quickly: Sun Araw, the prolific solo project of drone-psych specialist (and Magic Lantern member) Cameron Stallones, has a new album called Ancient Romans coming out on August 23. Stallones’ own Sun Ark label will put out the record, with some help from the good people at Drag City. The album will be available as a fairly extravagant double white vinyl in a gatefold jacket, complete with fancy accompanying art book, and a somewhat less extravagant CD version. And if you’re looking for a first taste of the record, look no further than this Mp3 of “Crete.”

Okay. Let me tell you why I wanted to get all the essential info on this Sun Araw record out so swiftly. See, the description of this record in the press release (as well as the Sun Araw site) is so awesome, it turns my brain into flan. Not gelatin, not pudding, none of those low-class treats. Flan. Here it goes:

Heartfelt and marbled, this album is documentation of the slow exit (the triumphal entry): moving the camera back 8 stages along the circumference of the circle to the point where the obverse is reverse, in order to celebrate the building of an edifice and then walk away from it in wisdom, gaining freedom from it.

God, don’t you just want to inhale that? I read that and I want to cry, it’s so rad. By the way, it’s worth mentioning that Sun Araw is going on a quick tour of the Northeastern United States (and a tiny lil’ bit of Canada). If any of those shows are even 10% as great as that above quote, then you must go. That said, I don’t blame you if you’re just going to stay home and read that quote over and over again.

Ancient Romans tracklist:

01. Lucretius
02. Crown Shell
03. Crete
04. Lute and Lyre
05. At Delphi
06. Fit for Caesar
07. Trireme
08. Impluvium

Damn! Dâm-Funk produces Steve Arrington album, flings spunk at audiences on world tour

Unlike other serious members of the TMT staff, I undoubtedly measure the importance of an artist by the volume of ejaculate they produce. The only justification I have for this is that I can only assume the production of large quantities of semen indicates divine genius. Due to my ‘research’ of hiding out in motel bathrooms and from possibly non-existent resources, I can unofficially announce that galactic-funk warlock Dâm-Funk is up there with Lady Gaga and Philip Glass.

Also, I discovered that Dâm-Funk has produced a new album from Steve Arrington (ex-Slave member) that is appropriately titled Goin’ Hard. Purchase the 12-inch or Mp3s after listening to samples on the Stones Throw site. To celebrate and show off his unfathomable amount of sperm (and play music, I’m guessing), Mr. Funk will go on tour to various cities.

David Byrne may soon find himself living in a shotgun shack, watching his own newly-released documentary on DVD

Of all the David Byrnes in the world, ex-Talking Heads David Byrne is the David Byrniest. The man’s done a lot of splish-splash and ching-ching with all his bang-twangs and his bloop-bleeps and his co co rico-co co ricos. Heck, Davie’s even done did a lot of that which was done with Brit buddy Brian Eno, a collaborator who is similarly surely the most superlative Brian Eno of all known eons of Enos. For ample examples, please simply see/remember The Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno tour, a tour that saw Byrnie traveling around the countryside touting the tout tunes of Davie+Eno (Davieno?) in the years 2008-09 A.D., respectively.

Now, in 2011 A.D., as The Wire ably wires, a fordone-but-not-forgone documentary of the lone travails of our hero DB on behalf of both halves (DB+BE), which was filmed on film in real time the whole time by full-time filmmaker (‘filmfilmer,’ in actuality, as he doubtless didn’t manufacture the film… if he even filmed on film, which I don’t know) David Hillman Curtis, is being made presently available on May 31, 2011 A.D. Entitled Ride, Rise, Roar, the alliterative artifact’ll be released on DVD and Blu-ray, thus making you bystander to performances of 14 tracks from the breadth of Byrneno’s longstanding and broadminded bender as the aforementioned Byrneno. Plenty of behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage and whatnot also help make the thing what it is and not what it isn’t. Hitch your long eyes to the short trailer here, and that’s the height and width of it.
