Oneohtrix Point Never has a new EP all set for release on June 12, and the concept is Replica remixes/reconstructions involving Lopatin’s own dream team of collaborators. COOL! It seems like whenever a band blows up and releases a remix EP, their list of esoteric influences shrinks down to a digestible pack of MAJOR artists and lamer labelmates, so we’re happy to report that Beck, Jack White, Damon Albarn, James Murphy, and Björk have nothing to do with the four tracks making up Dog in the Fog - Replica Collaborations & Remixes.

Instead, Lopatin called on TMT’s favorite shape-shifting troubadour Richard Youngs and techno legend Surgeon to provide remixes of “Nassau” and “Remember,” respectively. AND THAT’S JUST THE “B-SIDE” LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! Starting things off are two reworkings of Replica’s title track, one featuring King Midas Sound’s Roger Robinson as re-edited by OPN himself, and another featuring fellow vocal obsessive Limpe Fuchs as re-edited by Matmos! Shit… nobody tell Björk!! Dog in the Fog will be released digitally via Software; no word yet on a physical release. Neon Indian wants to make beautiful music with you and your PAL, announces contest that’s way less racy than it sounds

Sometimes you just need a PAL. Whether you’ve had a hard day at work, a recent breakup, or just got really bummed out from watching too much Mad Men, nothing feels better than taking time to just sit down, relax, and share some much-needed time with the crazy mini-synth created by Neon Indian in conjunction with Bleep Labs. Sure — human friends are nice and all, but will they help you create the sort of mindblowing drone/synth/bloop-blip-bloppy-soundin’ track that will win Alan Palomo’s heart and be forever preserved in the magical grooves of a limited 7-inch vinyl-only release on his own Static Tongues label? In short, no. Human friends cannot. Only PAL 198X can help you make this sort of musical magic; or at least, only proud owners of the PAL 198X are eligible.

Here’s the deal, see: Palomo, the man behind Neon Indian, wants you to show him whatcha workin’ with. Fire up your PAL 198Xs, ladies and gents, and create some “music (or non-music),” as Palomo puts it. And, like it did in kindergarten, creativity counts on this one. Make a video of you foolin’ around with your PAL, and submit that along with your track — PALOMO WANTS TO SEE IT ALL. Rules: there are no rules. Okay, okay, there is ONE. You gotta take a photo of your PAL with your production handle and the name of your track written next to it to prove ownership, then add the video and photo as the artwork for said track on the contest’s SoundCloud upload page.

If you’re kicking yourself for not already owning one of these hot little numbers, never fear, for Bleep Labs is releasing a limited run of these thangs for the low, low price of 15 American dollars. They’ve also got a new ribbon controller add-on for you. (You know what that means. I do not.) Your deadline, should you choose to accept it, is July 20. Mr. Neon Indian himself will pick the winner during the first week in August. The winner’s track will make up the B-side of the aforementioned Static Tongues 7-inch, where it will be intertwined with Palomo’s own contribution in “a series of drone and percussive lock grooves generated by the PAL as open source sample material for producers and enthusiasts alike.”

Ariel Pink, Sun Araw, Nite Jewel, White Magic, Dntel, and more covering Faust, Can, other krautrock klassix in L.A.

Ahh Hollywood. A strange, glittering, magical place where life can change in an instant, where dreams can come true. A place for dreamers, mystics, and total nutjobs. And for those Los Angeles residents dreaming specifically of a wonderful night of krautrock cover sets performed by some of the West Coast’s finest bands, well let’s just say the stars have aligned. This rare astrological phenomenon takes place but one night only, on this Friday, June 1, when online radio collective dublab and the deutsche-lovin’ folks over at The Goethe-Institut Los Angeles have teamed up to bring a little shindig known as “Krautrock Classics: An Evening of Cosmic German Music” to the John Anson Ford Theatre.

What could be better than a night spent in a lovely regional park listening to experimental Teutonic tracks from the 60s and 70s? Why, when they’re being performed by the likes of Sun Araw, Ariel Pink, and Nite Jewel, of course! Krautrock-inspired art and music will set the stage for a pre-show picnic at the Edison Plaza from 6-8 PM, with special DJ sets and “Krautrock themed t-shirt printing” (???) by HIT+RUN. Then once the magic hour rolls around, the program is as follows.

Imagine! Nite Jewel and Friends performing the entirety of Kraftwerk’s Computer World! Carlos Niño & Friends doing Popol Vuh, Pharoahs & Friends doing Manuel Göttsching’s E2 E4, Dntel and Hrishikesh Hirway (One AM Radio) working over Faust, ESP doing Can, Daedelus doing Rüdiger Lorenz, Sun Araw Band doing Krokodil, White Magic and Ariel Pink doing Inner Space (pre-Can), plus synth interludes by Nanny Canteloupe and live visuals by Alex Pelly & Miko Revereza. Ween break up, possibly because of a premonition Gene Ween had last night that his band wouldn’t still be really popular in November.

As John Lennon might very well have said if he had been a much, much worse songwriter and much, much crazier dude: the psychotropic, experimental-alternative, goof-core dream is over. Yup, Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo were once Gene and Dean Ween, but now they’re just Aaron and Mickey. Or at least, that’s the case Freeman made for himself in Rolling Stone this week when he stated that Ween is “pretty much” over after 25 years of tricking kids like me into liking Frank Zappa without realizing it. “It’s time to move on,” the former Mister Ween said when asked about retiring his moniker. “For me it’s a closed book. In life sometimes, in the universe, you have to close some doors to have others open… There’s no, ‘Goddamn that such and such!’ For me, I’d like to think it’s a door I can close finally.” Actually, Dean or Mickey or whoever he is now seemed to have no idea what his former collaborator was talm’bout. But hahaha, you know, isn’t that just SO WEEN? LOL??

Anyway, fans will remember that Gene and Dean first hooked up in 1984 (they met in typing class in 8th Grade) and went on to mangle experimental art rock, psychedelia, noise, comedy, and even good ol’ Alternative Rock (RIP) into 11 albums’ worth of delicious, bona-fide gnar-bars, including bizzaro classics like “Push th’ Little Daisies” and the Parker/Stone sanctioned “Even if You Don’t”. And any fans that don’t remember any of that have probably been high for kind of a while and should probably be alerted of the fact that it’s now 2012 and that they’ve been joblessly watching Comedy Central in their basement for the past 21 years or so.

RIP: Pete Cosey, guitarist for Miles Davis’ 1973-75 band

Guitar fans have had a rough couple of days. Yesterday brilliant folk and country guitarist Doc Watson died at age 89. This morning, according to the private Facebook page of fellow guitarist and collaborator Vernon Reid, Chicago’s own Pete Cosey died at 68. Obituaries and remembrances for Watson have already appeared all over, and deservedly so—few instrumentalists so completely absorbed America’s folk and country traditions, and fewer still brought such quiet virtuosity to them. Watson was a key catalyst in the folk revival after his discovery by producer Ralph Rinzler in 1960.

Pete Cosey, on the other hand, was a classic musician’s musician; he’s not especially well-known, though he played on tons of classic records. As such, word of his passing is traveling rather more slowly.

Cosey was a key session musician at Chess Records in the 60s, appearing on sides by Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, the Rotary Connection, and Etta James, and he worked with the great Phil Cohran in the latter’s Artistic Heritage Ensemble. He’s probably most famous, though (to the extent that he’s famous at all), for his mind-melting work with Miles Davis in the early 70s: he played on the trumpeter’s heaviest, most electric albums, including Agartha, Pangaea, and Get Up With It. After Davis broke up the band in 1975 and went into semi-retirement, Cosey was never able to build the solo career he so richly deserved. He used his guitar like an abstract expressionist painter, creating thick, richly textured solos with fierce rhythmic power, dazzling colors, and nonchalant violence.

Dirty Projectors add European tourdates after a premonition Longstreth had last night that his band would still be really popular in October.

Dirty Projectors (the band) are celebrating all the future fun they had from July 5 — August 18 touring North America by lining up another tour for October! This bonus tour has them traveling all over Europe, from the powdered wig factories of Manchester to Berlin, “the biggest coffee shop in the world.” Expect to hear ascending melodies, see receding hairlines, and “smell color” at any of these shows; the Projectors’ tour page has handy ticket links to each venue if interested.
