Outkast, Kraftwerk, Neutral Milk Hotel, Oneohtrix Point Never, M.I.A., Frank Ocean to play this year's Sasquatch! Festival; fans of those bands to attend this year's Sasquatch! Festival http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1402/news-14-02-sasquatch-festival.jpg

Can you believe it, folks? Why, it seems like only yesterday when we all hung out at Sasquatch! 2013 and accidentally got super high off all those fumes of flaming garbage barrels full of Devendra Banhart merchandise. Remember? Yeah, I kinda do too, strangely!

But either way, I guess the world keeps on turning or something, because here we are again at the precipice of Sasquatch! Music Festival 2014! This year’s fest will once again take place in George, Washington at ye olde Gorge Amphitheatre. Only this time: it’s PERSONAL.

Not really, but this year, the fest is expanding into two weekends worth of insanity — May 23-25 and July 4-6 — so, I guess maybe if any of those dates are significant to you it could be personal? Look, I don’t care. The point is that the lineups-of-insanity for those two weekends got announced today. And they are both, uh, insane.

May 23-25 will feature the likes of Outkast, Queens of the Stone Age, M.I.A., The National, HAIM, Deafheaven, tUnE-yArDs, Chance the Rapper, Neko Case, Panda Bear, Tyler, the Creator, Parquet Courts, Phosphorescent, Bob Mould, Waxahatchee, Major Lazer, Cut Copy, AlunaGeorge, Ryan Hemsworth, Liars, Foals, Kid Cudi, Mogwai, Classixx, Washed Out, Gesaffelstein, Phantogram, Die Antwoord, Big Freedia, Austra, Damien Jurado, Violent Femmes, Banks, The Dodos, La Luz, Tacocat, and more.

Awesome right? Yeah, but here’s the problem. July 4-6 is gonna be amazing too: Neutral Milk Hotel, Frank Ocean, Kraftwerk, Soundgarden, Spoon, New Order, Röyksopp & Robyn, Kurt Vile & the Violators, Broken Bells, Rhye, Action Bronson, Local Natives, Cloud Nothings, Sharon Van Etten, Mac DeMarco, Jon Hopkins, Foxygen, Oneohtrix Point Never, Mikal Cronin, Tegan and Sara, Cass McCombs, Junip, Courtney Barnett, Metz, The Notwist, Gold Panda, Audion, Deltron 3030, of Montreal, Death, La Roux, The Horrors, Chad VanGaalen, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, The Black Angels, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Chastity Belt, Latyrx, Black Milk, Reigning Sound, Atmosphere, Palma Violets, etc!

Holy shit! How can you even decide? Good luck, man. Seems tough. Oh, Me? I guess I’m probably just gonna go to both for free because I “work” for a “music blog.” Don’t you just hate me right now?

Mac DeMarco hastens the midlife crises of elder music fans, announces Salad Days LP on Captured Tracks, upcoming tour

Absent any specificity on the matter, let’s go ahead and assume that Salad Days, the upcoming sophomore LP from the musically gifted, aspiring vagabond Mac DeMarco, was composed and recorded with relative calm in between the morning brushing of teeth and the mid-morning tea-gathering with all of DeMarco’s closest buddies. Consider his previous international tour; then consider his upcoming international tour (dates below); then consider the time constraints necessitating windshield nozzles for a good once over, where shower access otherwise proves impractical. Avoid the eyes, focus on the pits, and air dry on the way to the next venue. No worries, adjacent cars! Mac is the epitome of generous when it comes to the dissemination of wayward pit hairs. I imagine so, anyway!

More than a year after its release, the first listen of 2 surprised the hell out of my ears with its overwhelming aura of feel-goodness. Salad Days, set for release April 1 on Captured Tracks, appears to maintain both the aura and the lyrical thoughtfulness, but with some instrumental dressing separate (or supplementing) the previously forefront guitar. I do generally prefer to avoid namedropping, but it seems reasonable to suspect the mutual musical rubbing-off of DeMarco and Matt Mondanile on one another, in addition to the literal rubbing on. I’d say expect a Salad ripe for tossing… around to one’s friends in the form of an unequivocal recommendation.

White Hills dish on tour dates, expanded-edition So You Are, favorite Super Bowl ads

You guys know about hills, right? Okay, good. And you’ve probably seen some hills at some point (probably during this ball-blasting, snowy-ass winter, at least) that are white? Great! Then your minds are in optimal condition for what I have to say about White Hills (you know, that spacey, krautrocky psych band?) releasing an expanded digital version of last year’s impeccably tautly reviewed So You Are… So You’ll Be, announcing some spring tour dates (including a stop at Austin Psych Fest), and appearing in Jim Jarmusch’s new movie Only Lovers Left Alive.

So… yeah. They are doing all three of those things! How psychedelic is that? So You Are… So You’ll Be is coming out on April 8 via Thrill Jockey as an expanded reissue. The new version features three tracks taken from Timeless Tracks for Aural Pleasure, a vinyl-only 12-inch that was previously available only through through two somethings called “mail-order” and “independent retailers.” It also has some new artwork and comes with a new “booklet of lyrics and images” but I mean, let’s face it: it’s digital, so who cares about those words I just said?

The tour dates include a few shows in London and Paris (with Jozef Van Wissem, and Jim Jarmusch’s band SQÜRL) to celebrate the release of Jarmusch’s cool new movie (coming out April 11 in the US), in which that band appears alongside the likes of Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and John Hurt — as well as that appearance at Austin Psych Fest in early May that I kinda already told you about. Hey, speaking of which, when you think about it, aren’t white-colored hills probably the least psychedelic color that hills could possibly be? Just sayin’.

White Hills tour dates:

02.06.14 - London, UK - Heaven Nightclub *
02.11.14 - Paris, France - La Machine *
04.24.14 - Brooklyn, NY - Saint Vitus Bar
04.25.14 - Baltimore, MD - Metro Gallery
04.26.14 - Wilmington, NC - Orton’s Bar and Billiards
04.27.14 - Durham, NC - The Pinhook
04.28.14 - Atlanta, GA - EARL
04.29.14 - New Orleans, LA - Siberia
04.30.14 - Houston, TX - Fitzgeralds Downstairs
05.01.14 - Dallas, TX - City Tavern
05.02.14 - Austin, TX - Austin Psych Fest
05.03.14 - Austin, TX - Austin Psych Fest
05.05.14 - St Louis, MO - Firebird

Public Image Ltd ask fans for help with photos/video for new documentary

Ahh, the late-70s/early-80s. A simpler time. A time without Instagram, a time without shitty cellphone videos, a time that makes it sort of difficult for bands to assemble previously unreleased footage of themselves to throw together into a documentary feature about groundbreaking post-punk experimentalism. Such is the quandary in which Public Image Ltd now find themselves.

In recent years, the band has released a full-length, This Is PiL, and played a few shows. Now John Lydon and crew are hoping fans can help them look back to their earliest days, sending out a call for photos and video of early PiL on their website. “Do you have a photo souvenir of the infamous Ritz riot show? Do you have a picture with or without John showing your injuries after being hit by a flying object!” the website asks. Photographic and video evidence can be submitted to PiLarchive [at] gmail.com. Selected material will receive a shout-out in the documentary’s end credits, and a small possibility that Lydon will learn to love you even more than he loves butter.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion announce spring tour, rename band unpronounceable moniker spoken in ancient tongue

First of all: insider information suggests that Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra have once again changed their name. Though it has not yet been confirmed by the group, sources claim that the band’s new name can only be pronounced in a long-forgotten tongue and even if you possessed the knowledge to speak it, reciting the unholy words to completion would take three natural lifetimes. For brevity, though, you can just call them A Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra And Tra-La-La Band With Choir, A Silver Chair Resuscitation Gone To The Holy City Jerusalem As The Sky Fills With Paladin’s Fire. Or, for further brevity, ATSMZOTBCSCRGHCJSFPF.

Last of all: Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra […] are going on a spring tour through the US and Canada. They’ll be playing songs off their very, very new album Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything (TMT Review). The end.

PAN announces more releases than you could possibly hope to carry in that little backpack of yours from Black Sites, Bass Clef, Valerio Tricoli, and more

There’s so much news I have to cover in this post, I’m sweating already. Seriously: forehead, pits, the whole works (#sorrynotsorry). I mean, there are four EPs and a full-length coming out on PAN that I’ve got to tell you about — not to mention that toddler birthday party I have to plan — and I’m guessing you’ve got people to meet later because you’re so cool and popular, so I’m really feeling the time crunch. And I mean, the pressure is really on because at the rate PAN is putting cool new stuff out (there was Jar Moff, NHK’Koyxeи, Dalglish, and Heatsick all toward the end of last year and Helm’s The Hollow Organ already this year) I’m going to be working my poor news-writin’ fingers to the bone for the foreseeable future.

EP number one comes from that great little producer on whose name I always almost add an extra “f,” Bass Clef. It’ll be called Raven Yr Own Worl and it’s out February 17. Check out the straight bumpin’ opener “Self-Perpetuating Fun Loop” or over on PAN’s SoundCloud if you’re not suddenly afraid of your mouse and/or track pad for some reason. EP number two is a self-titled release from Beneath, the dark and shadowy producer who favors hoodies that make it so you can’t see his face over, you know, smiling for pictures, and it’s due out March 17. It’s his first release with PAN, and it follows releases spanning from Tectonic, Keysound, and No Symbols (his own label). Track two of the A-side, “Occupy,” is knocking at your door, ready to pour its grimy clatter all down the front of your shirt right here.

EP number three is from Black Sites, the collaborative project of Helena Hauff and F#X. Arriving on April 14, Unit 2669 follows last year’s Prototype (TMT Review) and continues Black Sites’ ongoing project of attempting to punch their techno thud straight through your brain and see what happens when it comes out the other side. Don’t believe me? Open your ears to hear. Big number four is from the Berlin-based producer M.E.S.H., who up until now has only an EP and remixes of Dan Bodan and Fatima Al Qadiri under their belt. There’s not a release date yet, and it seems to just be titled EP, but if the scratchy swirl of the track “Siren Server” on PAN’s SoundCloud is any indication, it’ll raise some eyebrows at that toddler birthday party I mentioned, but will otherwise be pretty sweet.

And last but not least, there’s the full-length! It’s a double LP planned for February 24 from Italian mastermind Valerio Tricoli. It’s Tricoli’s first solo release in six years, following collaborations with PAN’s own Bill Kouligas, and Thomas Ankersmit. According to Resident Advisor, the release pulls from a 2011 sound installation and features “a healthy dose of spoken word, including writings from Dante, excerpts from Ecclesiastes and text from Tricoli himself.” Check out the track “Le Qoheleth ✚” here.
