Petra Haden’s life checklist must be an awfully strange thing. Play in well-loved 1990s power-pop group That Dog? Check. Tour with The Decemberists? Check. Release a full-length cover album of The Who’s The Who Sell Out? Check. Become a vocal coach for a reality show about a capella vocal groups? Well, um, check. Indeed, Haden spent a month in Burbank coaching a number of finalists on the forthcoming NBC reality show The Sing Off. “I was really there to help with people’s pitch and dynamics of the songs,” Haden said. “It was challenging, but still a great experience.”
