Like an avant-garde Voltron, Rangda has formed itself from the lions of Chris Corsano (Flower-Corsano Duo), Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls), and Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance). The group’s debut release, False Flag, was released earlier this year on Drag City. Now, alongside Major Stars, the three-part avant super robot of Rangda are going on a US tour to protect us from, well, something or other. You never really know with these guys!
I bet they’ll end every show with the Blazing Sword:

Portishead’s Geoff Barrow will be touring with his band BEAK> for a few North American dates in September. Unfortunately, if you don’t reside on either coast, you’ll have to wait. So far, the band has released an album (self-titled) and a single, which besides a new song also includes three live tracks (if you want to know what you’re in for). Both are available digitally at the band’s Bandcamp page. For those who haven’t given the music a spin, imagine a looser jam-session version of Portishead’s album Third (TMT Review) minus Beth Gibbons’ vocals, which makes sense considering both the album and the single were recorded without overdubs in a single studio room.
BEAK>’s tourdates:
09.03.10 - New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom
09.04.10 - Monticello, NY - All Tomorrow’s Parties
09.07.10 - San Francisco, CA - The Independent
09.08.10 - San Francisco, CA - Amoeba Records (in-Store)
09.09.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Amoeba Records (in-Store)
09.10.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Troubadour
Summers don’t last forever. Already the late-August rains are ushering in both the coming of September and the beginning of dismal fall. This sucks for most of us, but not for Stephen O’Malley, best known as one-half of groups sunn 0))) and KTL. If you’re at all familiar with either group, then you’ll agree that O’Malley is the perfect contender for bringing in this new, dreary season. And he will indeed be doing so, if by doing so means releasing a 40-minute cassette of feedback-laden guitar drone for Editions Mego. The release is titled Cocon & Oiseau de Nuit and is the first in a series of three cassettes that O’Malley plans to release under Editions Mego. It consists of one extended track and will be let loose on October 1st, because it’s surely not a summer album.
Joanna Newsom has just announced a new set of US dates for November. But the real news is that I found some sweet Newsom covers on YouTube today:

In sticking with their ability to handpick the most boring words possible, Small Black have decided to name their debut album something as equally boring. New Chain is due October 26 via Jagjaguwar, but I’m guessing the album will likely be a lot more awesome than its name lets on. According to their publicist: “Small Black succeeded in melting together locked and popped drum-shudder, gauzy spirographic synths, and subtly contagious, half-remembered melody into ebullient bursts of evocative, subliminal, and thoroughly modern pop.”
New Chain was recorded in suburban Delaware, away from Small Black’s home in Brooklyn, NY. Speaking of Brooklyn, the band’s only tour date right now is at the Monster Island Basement in Brooklyn on September 17.
The last time I saw Caribou live was earlier this summer at Millennium Park in Chicago. Dan Snaith and company put on a free show in the park and also incited a near-riot, as hundreds of fans danced their way to the front and proceeded to then jump on-stage, much to the annoyance of security. Not too many other bands can play a show on a Monday evening and get the crowd to pretend it’s a Saturday night. Hopefully Caribou will bring that same amount of energy to their upcoming North American fall tour when they tour in support of their recently released new album on Merge, Swim (TMT Review).
