From CNN:

Al Goodman, who sang baritone on such soul classics as “Love on a Two Way Street” and “Special Lady,” died Monday, his family told CNN.

Goodman, 67, died of heart failure during surgery to remove a tumor at Hackensack Medical Center in New Jersey, according to his daughter, Rhonda Goodman.

Goodman was “joking and laughing” before his surgery, she said.

“There’s mourning all over the world – in England, in Germany and in Japan,” said Marshall Thompson, leader of the Chi-Lites, on Tuesday. “We’re all mourning for Al Goodman.”

Seefeel return after 14 years with brand-new 10-inch Faults

Mark Clifford and his crew have returned. Perhaps not in the most traditional form, but returned nonetheless! After playing a stellar set at the Warp20 show in Paris last year, Seefeel, one of the pioneering groups of 90s ambient/space-rock, have decided to release their first collection of new recorded material in 14 years. The band has decided to release a 10-inch with four new tracks through who else but Warp. The lineup includes new members Shigeru Ishihara and E-da, the former having previously been a drummer for the seminal Boredoms. The title of said 10-inch is Faults, and you can stream the title track over here.

For those of you in the London vicinity, you’ll have at least one chance to catch the band in its new live incarnation on September 16 at London’s ICA. Don’t fret if you can’t catch ‘em this time around, though. According to Clifford, the band is expanding its live sound and planning on future shows. Wait, what was that you just whispered, Mark? Did you mention something about a full-length? No? Okay.

Is that buried treasure or just Broken Social Scene? Treasure Island festival anounces lineup

Arrrh, matey! I was goin’ ta be tryin’ an write this whole land-lovin’ article in pirate-speak, but fuck that, pirate-speak is dumb.

Do you have any plans for the days of October 16 and 17? If you don’t, then let me tell you that X marks the spot on your calendar when you’ll be heading to the 2010, fourth annual edition of the Treasure Island music festival! This year’s fest features the same picturesque views of the San Francisco Bay and a stellar lineup that features LCD Soundsytem, Broken Social Scene, and the first West Coast appearance by Belle and Sebastian in four years! Two-day and VIP tickets are already available for the fest, with one-day passes going on sale soon, but don’t wait too long to nab your chance to attend the kickinest festival this side of the Equator or you’ll risk missing an interactive village full of games, a live mural wall, a photo booth, local craft vendors, a 60 ft. Ferris wheel, slaughterhouse, gourmet food vendors from local San Francisco businesses, a casino, a refillable water program, Burger King, and buses to and from the festival!

Hey, did you know that this here Treasure Island music festival has never repeated an act? Neither did I until I read the press release! I also found out therein that the festival features two stages that alternate between artists rather than having multiple bands play at the same time (like one Chicago festival that shall remain nameless until the next sentence. Bad form, Lollapalooza…) so that everyone can hear every note of every band! The festival also breaks its two days down into easily-categorized set times, so that each day represents one genre of music: Saturday is electronic! Sunday is indie rock!

Tickets can be purchased on the Treasure Island website. That’s about all I remember from the press release, but is there anything else you really need to know?

Oh, yeah! The entire confirmed lineup:

Saturday, October 16:

LCD Soundsystem
Deadmau5
Kruder & Dorfmeister (live)
Miike Snow
!!!
Die Antwoord
Little Dragon
Four Tet
Holy Fuck
Phantogram
Jamaica
Wallpaper
Maus Haus

Sunday, October 17:

Belle & Sebastian
The National
Broken Social Scene
She & Him
Superchunk
Rogue Wave
Surfer Blood
Ra Ra Riot
Monotonix
The Sea & the Cake
Phosphorescent
Papercuts
The Mumlers

It’s time to have a very pretty dance party: Jon Hopkins to release new 12-inch and tour with Four Tet

Hey, remember when studio badass and ambient/electronic music whiz Jon Hopkins released Insides (TMT Review) last year? Well, Hopkins is hoping that you don’t, actually, so that he can sell you a couple of its songs all over again. Well, sorta. Let’s read on together!

On August 9, Hopkins’ label Domino is dropping a new 12-inch featuring a “garage-tinged” remix (I think that means he did it in Mario Paint?) of Insides jam “Vessel,” backed with a re-imagining of that same album’s “Wire” courtesy of Nathan Fake. Fans may recall that Hopkins himself recently remixed the Four Tet tune “Angel Echoes” for that eponymous 12-inch single (also via Domino), so I guess it’s only fair that Four Tet hits him back. (This is quite a racket Domino has going, huh?) You can check out the “Vessel” remix over here if your ears are trying to hear that shit. I haven’t listened to it yet, myself. But I’m just assuming right now that it sounds like this.

In addition to all of this generous remix back-scratching, Hopkins also gets the honor of supporting Four Tet on a string of North American dates this fall. Let that be a lesson to you, everybody. If you want to tour with famous electronic musicians, you just have to put your name on their music and sell it back to them!

Jon Hopkins tourdates:

09.05.10 - Long Island, NY - Electric Zoo Festival
10.14.10 - Chicago, IL - Metro *
10.15.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Henry Fonda Theater *
10.16.10 - San Francisco, CA - Treasure Island Music Festival
10.20.10 - Toronto, ON - The Mod Club *
10.21.10 - Montreal, QC - Studio Just For Laugh *
10.22.10 - New York, NY - Webster Hall *
10.24.10 - Washington, DC - 9:30 Club *
