RIP: Jesus "Jess" Porras of The Mixtures

Jesus “Jess” Porras, longtime resident of San Diego, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on December 26, 2010. Jess was born in Oxnard, to Felipe and Dolores on November 20, 1941 and with his sister Maria and brothers Phil and Art, were raised surrounded by a large, loving extended Mexican American family.

Jess came from a lineage of professional musicians and his first love was music which he took to early, learning the violin at nine, followed by tenor and alto sax, flute, horn, guitar, and piano.

He was a member of “The Mixtures,” an R&B band, and played all the major L.A. Clubs from 1957 to 1962. Their album “Stompin at the Rainbow” is being re-released April 5.
