Influential music producer Martin Rushent, best known for his work with The Human League and the Buzzcocks, has died.

Music website Louder than War broke the news overnight, and his son later confirmed the news on Facebook.

Rushent was best known for his work with bands in the punk and new wave era.

His best-known work was with the Human League, producing and performing on their mega-successful album Dare, and hit single ‘Don’t You Want Me’. He was named Best Producer at the 1982 Brit Awards, and released a remix version of the album the following year, called Love and Dancing.

Other bands and artists he worked with include the Buzzcocks (and their lead singer gone solo, Pete Shelley), the Stranglers, XTC, Generation X (Billy Idol), the Go-Go’s (Belinda Carlisle) and Altered Images.

Before his career with punk and new wave bands, he worked on records by T Rex, David Essex and Shirley Bassey.

Matmos’ Drew Daniel curates Art & Politics conference with Matthew Barney, Kode9, and not Mike Huckabee

Can Art and Politics Be Thought? That’s an interesting question. Now you might be thinking, “Did you leave out a word in that first sentence or something, I don’t… really…” but before you embarrass yourself any further, understand that this is the official title of a two-day conference at UCLA curated by Matmos’ Drew Daniel and Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at UCLA Kenneth Reinhard, so maybe you should just re-read the sentence and mull it over before you start running your mouth. So, let’s start again: Can Art and Politics Be Thought, You Asshole? This story wasn’t supposed to be so aggressive! Goddammit!!!

I’m back. “Can Art and Politics Be Thought?” (deep breath…) is taking place this weekend at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in conjunction with the UCLA Program in Experimental Critical Theory, with two days packed full of lectures and performances by Matmos, Kode9, Matthew Barney, Alain Badiou, and other “contemporary artists, critics, and philosophers,” all attempting to explore the relationship between art and politics. Some of the questions being posed include:

Is a relationship between art and politics that does not compromise the specificity of each practice possible? Can art be political without becoming propaganda? Does politics have anything to learn from art? How have artists approached these questions in their concrete practices and reflections on those practices? And how have theorists conceptualized and contributed to those practices?

And here I thought the only pertinent question was, “Does the artist use a megaphone and make their voice sound sorta like Zack de la Rocha?”! We’re always learning in this life. Though the event is free, like all programs at the Hammer, tickets are still required for entry (to keep out any kids sloshed with jungle juice) and can be picked up at the Billy Wilder Theater box office one hour before the conference starts. MusicfestNW announces five-day lineup, including Archers of Loaf, Sebadoh, and Olivia Tremor Control

Summertime. Seasonal beers, scanty clothing, mosquito bites. Summer is also the season that brings all those things together in one place — you know what I mean. It’s festival time. None of that medieval fest stuff your parents used to drag you too, either — no turkey legs and corsets at the festivals we’re interested in, just bands, alcohol, and sunburns. Now, you may think lineup announcements are old hat now; after all, there’s no shortage of three-day concerts in such-and-such park, green wristbands for $90, yellow for $130. If you’re in the Pacific Northwest, though, you may want to pay attention: MusicfestNW has finalized its lineup for September 7-11 in Portland, Oregon, and there’s nothing old hat about it.

Okay, some of the bands are sort of old — which only makes the lineup all the more important to catch. There’s Archers of Loaf, Olivia Tremor Control, Butthole Surfers, and Sebadoh (90s anyone?), but also Cass McCombs, Dirty Beaches, Ty Segall, and plenty others if you’re one of those ageist types that only listen to music since 2009. For all days, tout compris, it’s $115, or $70 for one of three ‘headliner’ outside shows in Pioneer Courthouse Square (with your choice of Band of Horses, Explosions in the Sky, or Iron & Wine), plus all club shows. (There are also more options for individual ticketing here.) Tickets go on sale June 3; now MFNW just has to work on a better name for year 12!

Apple signs iCloud deal with Universal and the major publishers, possibly by offering them Alice Cooper tickets in Milwaukee

Great news, Guys! Apple is about to once again completely devalue your entire conception of what it means to be a ‘music collector’ by making access to your collection mind-numbingly ubiquitous and paralyzingly convenient! Woo hoo! I don’t know about you, but personally, I can’t wait to never bother listening to any records because I always have the option to do so.

Anyway, as Billboard reports (and as everyone everywhere pretty much expected), Apple has thoroughly made Amazon and Google feel totally ‘salty’ by signing that elusive fourth major label — Universal Music Group — to a licensing deal for its game-shifting, paradigm-changing, “iCloud” music service, which will supposedly be announced on Monday June 6 at its Worldwide Developer Conference (whoa, give it up to TMT for bringing you FUTURENEWS). You may recall from reading our site all day every day that no one else has been able to get Universal to play ball up until now, which, as comedian/Jewish guy Jerry Seinfeld will tell you, has lead to some pretty big matzo balls hanging out from the other guys’ cloud services.

Oh. Also, Apple has scored licensing deals with the four major music publishers in the biz, which is another huge piece in the cloud puzzle. Specifically, the publishers will get 12% of the cloud revenue, while the majors will allegedly receive 58%, leaving little old Apple with a nice round 30%. They haven’t yet struck deals with all the little guys (indie labels and publishers), but Billboard’s sources are saying that the indie publishers will be cut in at the same 12% rate. For their part, some of the indie labels are saying that they’re pushing for a higher cut, but we all know that’s nonsense. It’s ‘join or die’ time. For you? It’ll reportedly cost $25.

And in case you’re wondering “what’s gonna be so much slicker about Apple’s cloud anyway?” The answer is that, in addition to having everyone’s full legal permission, it’s supposed have the insanely convenient feature of syncing automatically with iTunes and your iTunes folder (and perhaps even more FAR OUT places in the future). In other words, whatever’s in your library on your home computer will be in your library anywhere on Earth. Heck, even in a real library! Isn’t that just disgusting? And don’t you just want it so bad??

St. Vincent stops covering Big Black for one darn second, announces new record Strange Mercy

Now that she’s done doing (pretty amazing) Big Black covers, St. Vincent’s Annie Clark can get back to business. That business is show business, kid. To stay in the biz, you’ve got to release new albums and Miss Clark, hey, she’s got it down pat. What I mean is that on September 13, St. Vincent will be putting out her third record Strange Mercy through 4AD. One would imagine that you, my friend, already know that it’s the follow-up to 2009’s super-acclaimed Actor (TMT Review), but, heck, if you don’t, it is the follow-up to 2009’s Actor (TMT Review).

On Strange Mercy, Clark joined forces once again with Actor producer John Congleton, who you may know from producing all your favorite records, and laid down many a track at Dallas’s Elmwood Studios. Such tracks include the horn-section-boasting “Cruel” and the fuzzy-guitar-loaded “Cheerleader,” but not a single Big Black cover. Ugh! Couldn’t she even squeeze in a rendition of Shellac’s “Prayer for God?”

Evidently, all that time not recording Steve Albini covers has been put to hiring some extra hands for Strange Mercy. Fair enough. Among the players brought in for added flair are Grammy-winning jazz musician Bobby Sparks (playing mini Moog, clavinet, ARP, and Wurlitzer), Midlake drummer Mackenzie Smith, violinist Daniel Hart, Beck keyboardist Brian LeBarton, and woodwind player Evan Smith. Rumor has it that none of these people will actually be audible on the record, due to the overwhelming sound of Annie Clark’s ferocious guitar playing. I wouldn’t take that rumor too seriously, though.
