RIP: Storm Thorgerson, designer of album covers for Pink Floyd, Ween, Led Zeppelin

From the BBC:

Storm Thorgerson, whose album cover artwork includes Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, has died aged 69, the band’s management has confirmed.

A childhood friend of the founding members of the band, he became their designer-in-chief, fashioning a string of eye-catching creations.

He designed the cover showing a prism spreading a spectrum of colour for The Dark Side Of The Moon.

His credits also include albums by Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel and Muse.

Mykki Blanco reveals new EP, enormous tour, plans for world domination (last one already accomplished)

Mykki Blanco was first brought to my attention when she opened for Death Grips on around the tail end of last year. After watching the videos for “Haze.Life.Boogie” and “Wavvy” and being floored by her live show (literally, I fell over), there was only one reasonable conclusion: Mykki Blanco has genuine talent. Even beyond the sexual politics, crossing, and glam image (all of which I love, by-the-by) you have some of the sickest, most creative, provocative, and smart raps currently in the game. Her flow puts wrinkles straight into your brain. Last year’s Cosmic Angel: Illuminati Prince/ss mixtape is so good it’s unfair; listening to it means being willing to let it take up residence in your head for life.

This puts some demanding expectations on Mykki Blanco’s upcoming Betty Rubble: The Initiation EP; it basically has to resonate around the same point of mind/body connection and also subvert enough expectations to remain interesting. Let’s draw back the curtain and gaze upon the newly minted video for “Feeling Special” to see how that works out.

Ah. Well then. Looks like Mykki has that shit on lock-down. Not that I ever really doubted her; the fact that her imminent EP is worth watching was obvious when the Supreme Cuts-produced “BUGGED OUT!!!” dropped a few weeks back. I mean, who can touch Mykki? The world is hers right now: sick new tracks off a new EP and oh, right, a world dominating international tour. That’s barely even hyperbole: this tour is gigantic and encircles the globe. Prepare to bow down to Ms. Blanco, “new world order mutha fucka follow pronto.”

A$AP Rocky to release self-produced instrumental album, drop it whenever he damn well pleases

If there’s one thing everyone can agree on about A$AP Rocky’s recent full-length, Long.Live.A$AP (TMT Review), it’s that it had rapping on every song, but only a few tracks produced by Rocky himself. Everybody can agree on this because it is true. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, well, that’s a matter of personal preference. But let’s say that you think it’s a bad thing, a horrible thing really. Let’s say you would far prefer an A$AP Rocky album with no rapping and every track produced by A$AP Rocky. Great news for you, because Pitchfork reports that just that is happening.

In an interview with the Bay Area’s WiLD 94.9, Rocky talks about putting out a self-produced instrumental record sometime in the near future. At the moment, “the near future” is the closest thing this album has to an official release date. Rocky says that he doesn’t even plan to announce the album’s release date, instead opting to drop it whenever he feels like. Great, just great. Now we have to live in constant fear of an A$AP Rocky album coming out of nowhere. Could happen at any time. It’s your wedding day. You’re walking down the aisle. You lean in to kiss the bride/groom. Bam, A$AP Rocky instrumental album out of nowhere. Everybody dies.

Laurel Halo offers details on new Hyperdub EP, yet again denies writers the satisfaction of making Full House jokes

As it was reported, so shall it be: Laurel Halo has announced the full details for her new EP on Hyperdub, called Behind the Green Door. If only she had swapped out “red” for “green” I would’ve had the chance to make my long-threatened joke about an imaginary tell-all John Stamos memoir (Behind the Red Door, obvi) that would have covered all the weird and supernatural shit that went down on the set of Full House during the 90s. (For real, this joke is very long-threatened and I am dead serious about it. I’ve lost friends over it — if you can’t stand the Full House joke heat, you better get out of the friendship fire, am I right?). As it stands, the title seems to be a reference to a “classic” porn film from the 70s.

According to The Quietus, the EP represents a bit of a stylistic shift for Laurel Halo, integrating more elements of Detroit techno and contemporary UK club music. These four tracks will reportedly be “dancefloor-ready,” as opposed to the really socially awkward tracks off 2012’s Quarantine (TMT Review) which, when asked to join their friends on the dancefloor mostly hemmed and hawed and ended up hiding in the bathroom for most of the night with the cool kids. And sure, like the porn it references, this EP will probably be available for free on the Internet, but you can also buy it from Hyperdub on May 20 if you’re not, you know, a freeloading jerkface.

Behind the Green Door tracklist:

01. Throw
04. Sex Mission

Adventure beats level, advances to third album Weird Work

Up, up, down, down, A, B, A, B, left, right, right, left, A, A, up, down, select, start, then select and start at the same time. If you do it right, that’s the cheat code you’ll need to release an awesome nugget of news about Adventure’s new album! Oh shit, I just spoiled the surprise. You should still try that out next time you’re playing your old NES (any game should do the trick), but here’s the DL in the meantime: Baltimore’s Benny Boeldt is set to drop a new Adventure record right into your cartridge slot on April 30 courtesy of Carpark Records. THIS April 30. Line up outside the GameStop and then when it’s time, walk over to the Best Buy next door, find out they don’t have anything worth buying, then go to your local record store and buy the new Adventure record, titled Weird Work.

The new album definitely has a more evolved IDM vibe (think old, REALLY fun Squarepusher), but each track still sounds like it could be the background music for any given Mega Man level (this is a good thing). Hear first single and final album track “Happiness” below.

Weird Work tracklist:

01. Days Off
02. Laser Blast
03. Nervous
04. Flower
05. Reality Shift
06. Alone
07. Constantly
08. Catching Up
09. Happiness

Bill Callahan emotes, “Hey everyone, I’m going on tour! It’s going to be amaaaaazingg!!”

Ruminating in Bill Callahan’s under-appreciated back catalog is one thing, but I imagine (and I have to, because the experience has so far eluded me) that hearing him in a live setting is a different low-frequency beast altogether. Here’s how I imagine it going: Callahan walks out on stage, grabs his guitar, and assumes his position in front of the microphone. Breathe in. The microphone and its stand shake in anticipation. “There grows… ” And everyone’s clothes have vibrated completely off their body, in what is only an initial display of baritone sexiness.

Living on the West Coast, it looks like I’ll have to continue removing my clothes manually for the time being, as Callahan has just announced a series of lives dates centered around the middle of the country — Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri… you know, that whole area. Check out the schedule in full below.
