If you like a good bloop, followed by a bleep, maybe a ping, and then a big bump, then you’ll likely enjoy the work of Roman Flügel a.k.a. Soylent Green, Acid Jesus, Holy Garage, Primitive Painter, and Springrolls in Firenze (no joke). The German-born producer is a techno veteran who’s landed dual citizenship among the heads and the casual clubbers by churning out sophisticated, fun tracks under a number of aliases since the mid-90s. “Gehts Noch” has been his biggest hit, pioneering the (all too) familiar Dutch trance sound that spearheads just about every Electric Daisy Carnival-breed EDM track you’ll hear this year, or last, or the one before. But “Gehts Noch” is good! And Flügel hasn’t faltered of late, with a characteristically eccentric EP called Hachinoko (a Japanese treat of sweet baby bee innards) for the food-dubbing, Simian Mobile Disco-run label Delicacies.
Coming up next is a full-length for Dial Records. It’s called Happiness Is Happening and it’ll drop September 1. Previously on Dial, Flügel put out Fatty Folders, a wide-ranging collection of techno strains with such elegant titles as “Lush Life Libido” and “Bahia Blues Hotel.”
