Ruby Suns Tour in Support of Fight Softly; Mock Winter Storms in America

While the entire East Coast of the United States was under a winter storm death watch, Ryan McPhun of The Ruby Suns was hanging out in New Zealand wearing shorts and mocking everyone in a winter coat and scarf. Don’t worry though, Ryan will get his when The Ruby Suns tour the US in March and April, when it’s still (sort of) cold. Except they’re starting the tour in his native state of California, so the dude pretty much never needs to buy any item of clothing that extends past his elbows or knees. The Ruby Suns will be supporting their new album, Fight Softly, which is due on March 2 via Sub Pop.

Jamie Lidell Enlists Feist, Beck, Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor For New LP

Jamie Lidell’s a popular guy. And why shouldn’t he be? Between releasing two great modern soul LPs, playing consistently great live shows, and beatboxing on the beach, the man just adds up to a whole lot of likable. So likable, in fact, that Mr. Lidell has been able to enlist a handful of his high-profile buddies to help out on his new LP, Compass, due out via Warp on May 18.

How high-profile are these buddies, you ask? Somewhere around a Beck on the Fame-o-meter, that’s how high-profile. And while Beck is certainly the biggest name on Compass, the rest of the supporting cast is no slouch. Among the folks showing up for this little soiree are Leslie Feist, Ms. Feist’s producer Gonzales, Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor, and Wilco’s Pat Sansone. Lidell’s own thoughts on this impressive list of collaborators: “You don’t fuck with them!” Well said.

As for the sound of the album itself, the folks at Warp describe it as “his most eclectic album yet,” featuring songs that “shift, chop, change and mutate genres and forms before our very ears.” If that sounds like a restless piece of work, it may reflect Lidell’s relatively quick writing process this time around. “I wrote every song in a month,” Lidell said. “It’s been an emotional couple of years, so I tapped into what I wanted to say and started writing.”

The Flaming Lips Announce Summer Tour, Shoot Off a Million Streamers and Bottle Rockets, All While a Bear Punches an Octopus with Ten Santas Watching

If you’re some upstart indie rock band, hanging in the public consciousness by a little blog buzz or a mention on Pitchfork or something, announcing a tour isn’t really a big deal. Send in your dates to a few fine news outlets, said news outlet will post them, some people will get excited, and some people won’t care. That’s all.

But if you’re The Flaming Lips, announce some tourdates and everything goes crazy: Wayne Coyne shoots a million streamers and blows up 20 tons of fireworks! Steve Drozd rides a bicycle through a giant cube of Jell-O! Michael Ivins hurls a javelin into a unicorn! A bear punches an octopus in the face and a scientist plays against a Mountie in chess! People get really excited!

Not to say that any of this would be surprising; this is all conjecture. Except for that last one. People will get really excited about Flaming Lips tourdates.

Exciting dates for an exciting world:

Quasi Announce European Dates; Hope You’re at Least Quasi-Interested

Lovers of hesitant band names, take notice! (Or at least, take some tepid, initial notice, maybe? Well, just agree to feel it out, at least.)

Quasi is almost semi slightly halfway ready for a maybe supposed tour of the UK and Europe, maybe. Sam Coomes, Janet Weiss, and Joanna Bolme, the boy and girls who sort-of make up the tentatively-titled Quasi, are pretty much about to release their eighth album, American Gong, on Kill Rock Stars next week. And, as we previously reported, they’ve got a mess of US dates already in the works. Maybe. Reportedly. Most of the way.

But it turns out that Coomes and co. are only… half done touring this milquetoast thing around, as they’ve just announced a UK and European tour for May. The three-piece will perform their trademark brand of Pacific Northwestern accredited rock at the Pavement-curated ATP Festival, followed by a string of shows both on the mainland and in other UK locales, just in time for summer vacation! Are you semi-ready to get kinda-pumped?!
