On a side note: when I went to Sasquatch! in 2006, get this: I left — ha, ha, ha — before The, err, Flaming Lips were on! Not that I regret it now… no, no… of course not… had to be back home in time for dinner… couldn’t possibly miss dinner.

DON’T JUDGE ME.

EMI Bought With NYC Pensions, Terra Firma Wants Its Money Back

We recently reported on some troubling developments at EMI involving employee layoffs and budget cutbacks. Well, it turns out that the company’s losses could end up affecting not just the folks who work there, but also many people employed by the city of New York.

In a bizarre twist of corporate finance, the pension funds of some NYC public employees are apparently tied to the success or failure of the British record label. It’s complicated, but we’ll try to explain:

EMI was acquired back in late 2007 by private equity firm Terra Firma. During the takeover, Terra Firma pulled $2.35 billion from its cryptically named investment funds Terra Firma II and Terra Firma III to help seal the deal. According to an article run by Billboard.biz, those funds include “pension funds, life insurance companies, college endowments and other institutional investors.” Pensions of state employees all across the nation, from Oregon to Indiana, are attached to Terra Firma’s investments in EMI. But the plight of NYC employees is being highlighted in a lawsuit Terra Firma has brought against Citigroup, the bank that brokered the EMI buyout back in 2007, for misrepresenting the deal. Terra Firma alleges it paid too much for EMI because Citigroup lied in claiming there were multiple bids for the label.

It’s certainly a tangled web. Let’s just hope a solution can be worked out so that EMI can keep making those records, and NYPD retirees can rest assured they didn’t work the beat in vain.

Micheal Jackson’s doctor charged with “Maneater.” Wait… Wrong 80s identity, actually Manslaughter.

It’s no form of “Guessing Games” that “Crime [doesn’t] Pay,” but Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s personal doctor, was charged with manslaughter last week. Sir Jackson was administered propofol as a sleep aid, and as all of us pharmacologists know, propofol is used as an anesthetic for major surgery. It’s “The Art of a Heartbreak,” but the doctor is facing up to four years in a state prison. The Judge refused the prosecutions request of a $300,000 bail, for it was far above the $25,000, but they hugged and settled on a $75,000 bail.

In previous cases, the judge said that Murray was sued for dodging child support, and it makes him less likely, or ‘inclined,’ to show up for his criminal case. I guess he’s no “Family Man.” It was a “Delayed Reaction,” but Judge Schwartz said, “I don’t want you sedating people.” “Open All Night,” the court showed that doc was on his cell phone for 45 minuets before he called an ambulance when he came in to see Jackson unconscious and not breathing.

Jackson also called propofol ‘milk’ — that’s a little creepy right? Just sayin’… This is just another high-profile case that reveals the hidden world of Hollywood Medicine. You know, the one that resides outside of health care reform and the government, the one that hangs with Magic Johnson.

UK Independent Record Stores Show Solidarity in Stemming the Decline in Music Stores

Indie record stores in the UK have joined forces to try to prevent future music store closures. A website has been created so users can search for their nearest indie store and see what the shop has to offer. Indierecordshop is supported by the Entertainment Retailers Assocation (ERA) and Digitalstores.

There were 774 indie stores in 2004, but now less than 300 remain. Unsurprisingly, it’s people like you who have caused these waves of closures. Last year, 150 million singles were sold in the UK, with 98% being downloaded. Kim Bayley, ERA director general, said “It’s hard to tell whether it’s [Indierecordshop] going to stem the tide, but I think, to be honest, we’ve seen most of the fallout in the sector and the stores which are left are probably the best of the best.”

I bet you feel bad downloading that latestSupersilent release, don’t ya!?
