Group Inerane embark on their first and best European tour

The Tuareg people are nomads who inhabit a stretch of desert in northwestern Africa. Their society is matrilineal, so social status is transmitted through women, families generally reside close to the wife’s parents, and women own the family’s livestock. Tuareg men wear an indigo veil that conceals most of the face, and the garment has earned them the nickname of “Blue People,” because indigo pigment tends to stain the skin.
Group Inerane has developed a sound that embodies the mystique of Tuareg history and even slightly channels 60s psychedelia, a sound that the group’s label, Sublime Frequencies, says “rivals both the Magic Band’s early 70s marathon workouts and The Velvet Underground’s drone on tracks like ‘Sister Ray’.” The Wire reports that Group Inerane has a handful of European dates scheduled throughout November and December, and their most recent album, Guitars from Agadez Vol. 3 (TMT Review), will be repressed along with a new 7-inch, which will be sold exclusively on tour.

Blackout Beach has a new album called Fuck Death, but you’re not tagged in it

“Fuck Death” seems like a phrase someone might paint across the side of an abandoned building in bubble letters the colors of Christmas lights, and Blackout Beach could easily be the title of a post-high school graduation Facebook album, one where everyone looks sweaty and beer cans are conveniently blurred out.
However, spray paint and digital cameras did nothing to inspire the forthcoming LP from Frog Eyes’ frontman Carey Mercer’s solo project. The title comes from a Leon Golub painting, and Mercer cites a variety of influences including the book of Job, George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia, Kraftwerk, fuzz, cosmic sounds, Iraq, and Chinese soldier poems. Somehow, this all adds up to the sound of a slow-motion electro-apocalypse, and Mercer says, “The most important lyric on Fuck Death is ‘run away.’ It’s a bit heavy, especially because the dominant 2011 story is that kids want to live on an invisible beach within their hearts and party this stuff away. But not all kids scorn uneasiness. And not all music is made for kids.”
Pack your bags and start thinking about where you’re going to crash tonight, because that “run away” track, “Beautiful Burning Desire,” is available to download at Dead Oceans. Fuck Death will be out on vinyl and digital formats on November 15.

Crystal Antlers announce reflective tour in support of Two-Way Mirror

LA Weekly described Crystal Antlers’ latest album Two-Way Mirror (TMT Review) as carrying a “concert”-like atmosphere. One wonders, then, just how unimaginably noisy, energetic, and reverberant the psychedelic band from Long Beach will be when they actually perform live on their upcoming tour. Beginning September 10, though not truly getting in to the swing of things until September 22, the band will be performing a series of shows throughout Europe and then across the US from late October through November. Also, providing further draw, keyboardist Isaiah ‘Ikey’ Owens (The Mars Volta, Free Moral Agents) will join the band on select dates.

Aphex Twin to perform this month with Jonny Greenwood and Steve Reich

Sinister-grinning electronician Aphex Twin is preparing to embark on two sure-to-be-jaw-dropping collaborative performances in Europe this month. The first takes place on Saturday September 10 as part of the European Culture Congress in Wroclaw alongside Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead guitarist, composer, duh) and composer Krzysztof Penderecki (interesting esoteric nugget: Penderecki’s compositions were recently performed by members of the Krakow orchestra at Lincoln Center in New York during the Unsound Festival opening night, which also featured Ben Frost!). Aphex Twin will perform his reworkings of Penderecki’s “Polymorphia” and “Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima.” This will be the world premiere of both compositions.
On September 17, the second collaboration at the Sacrum Profanum Festival in the Tinning Plant of ArcelorMittal, Kraków will consist of Aphex Twin performing as part of recently no-fly listed Steve Reich’s Reich 75 project, with the following collaborators: Adrian Utley of Portishead, Will Gregory of Goldfrapp, Tom Verlaine of Television, Leszek Moz.dz.er, Pianohooligan (a.k.a. Piotr Orzechowski), and Envee. According to Warp Records, this is a one-off performance and will never be repeated again.

Odd Future gets series on Adult Swim, where they show Sealab 2021 and The Brak Show

Every Sunday night, Cartoon Network becomes a different place. The family-friendly channel known for Dexter’s Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls becomes a wonderland for grown folks, known as Adult Swim. Anchored by black-and-white footage of old people swimming and short clips of Aquaman dancing, the block features modern classics like Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast, Home Movies, and Cowboy Bebop, along with original programs The Brak Show, Sealab 2021, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. While this foray into adult-oriented programming may make parents uneasy, it is clear that the Adult Swim is an emerging brand with a bright future.
No television block can expand without fresh programming, though. With this is mind, the Adult Swim folks are taking a big leap by announcing Loiter Squad, a program from California hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (henceforth to be referred to as simply Odd Future). Though the majority of Odd Future’s members are roughly 10 years old as of this writing, the group will create a program consisting of sketches, man on the street portions, prank clips, and segments focusing on their music. Producing the show is Dickhouse Entertainment, who are responsible for current cultural phenomenon Jackass. Oddly, the show will be live action, seemingly a first for Cartoon Network. Still, if anyone can smash the rules of Cartoon Network’s current iteration, it’s Odd Future. Maybe one of them will even win a VMA one day.
