No band deserves to have their equipment stolen, especially not Sleepercar, which features former Sparta/At The Drive-In member Jim Ward. Rumors at the TMT offices (started by me) claim that the thiefs are big At The Drive-In fans, so perhaps Ward would have more luck recovering the gear if he decided to to ring up Cedric Bixler or Omar Rodriquez and suggest a reunion tour. You know, just a suggestion. In the meantime, please read the following message from Ward and keep an eye out for any of the following pieces of equipment if you find yourself in the Texas area:
Our trailer was stolen early Saturday, August 27th, from a parking lot next to the Marriott in downtown San Antonio, TX. We lost a substantial amount of gear, some of which is pretty unique, so we area keeping our fingers crossed it’ll show up somewhere, someday… can you please pass this along to anyone you know who tours or buys gear, especially if they live around central Texas. The pawnshops should get the list from the police report, but every little bit helps-if you see this stuff out there please email or call our studio:

Look, I know Sub Pop is a big label that covers plenty of stylistic ground in the acts they sign. But hip-hop on Sub Pop? Well, I never! Except I’m going to have to go ahead and change that “never” to an “ever,” because spacey hip-hop outfit Shabazz Palaces have signed to the label. Once upon a time last year, the group was self-releasing a pair of EPs: Of Light and Shabazz Palaces. But those days are over now! Instead, they’ll be releasing a full-length through Sub Pop next year.
Until then, they’ll be playing a couple of noteworthy shows. The first will be at The Stranger’s Genius Awards Party, having been the first recipient of the publication’s Genius Award for Music. That show will take place at Seattle’s Moore Theatre on September 17. Shabazz Palaces will also be hitting up another prestigious venue by playing the American Museum of Natural History on October 15, as part of a FADER-produced monthly music series called “One Step Beyond.”
Hey, did you know one of the guys in Shabazz Palaces used to be in Digable… oh never mind, you probably already know.
We proud newswriters here at TinyMicksTapes.net have a reputation for composing jocular headlines meant to amuse as well as inspire contempt. But rest assured, dear readership, that what you see above is no misguided TMT headline jape — Robert Schneider (this one, not that one) has indeed constructed an EEG-controlled synthesizer.
Dubbed the Teletron, the new instrument combines a vintage Realistic MG-1 synthesizer with a Mattel Mindflex toy that allows Schneider to control the synth’s pitch with his own math-stuffed mind. If all that sounds too simple, it’s because it is. According to Schneider, anyone with a synthesizer and the ability to mod a control voltage output plug into a Mindflex can produce a Teletron. Hell, he even made a step-by-step modding instruction video just to make construction that much easier.

Ever wonder where bands like Belle and Sebastian or Camera Obscura got their licks from but never thought to ask? Well, Domino has done you a grand favor by re-introducing the world to Scottish post-punk/new wave band Orange Juice with the box set Coals to Newcastle. The band, who had their heyday throughout the early 80s, will be represented by a six-disc box set spanning the band’s entire existence, including the full discography, outtakes, BBC sessions, 16 unreleased tracks, and a DVD chock full of music videos and live footage. Go ahead and scope out the entire tracklist here or below. It’s set for release of November 8 in Europe and November 9 in the US. Somehow, as good as these guys were, it doesn’t make Arctic Monkeys sound any more legitimate.

As you may be well aware of, No Age have a new full-length album coming out September 28. It’s called Everything in Between, and Sub Pop will be doing the honors, as they did for 2008’s Nouns (TMT Review). No Age, being the ambitious and giving fellas that they are, want you to know how ambitious and giving they actually are are by touring across the states in support of this upcoming effort.
They also have a new single from the LP, called “Life Prowler.” Watch a video for the track:
A mere 6,000 years after God Almighty announced the first cloud-based service (rain), Sony is honing in on the act with their recent announcement of a decidedly more metaphorical “cloud-based music-streaming service.” Sony excited a tiny, nerdy portion of the world recently when it let loose its plans to launch a PlayStation 3-based music cloud service. This service will allow PS3 users to stream their favorite songs and what-have-you from an online library for a nominal fee.
At this point, you may be asking yourself, “wait, what about Apple’s cloud-based music service that my Steve Jobs-obsessed IT friend at work assures me is coming back soon?” Well, sucks to your friend’s ass-mar, because Sony has said that it plans, like Google, to launch its service by the end of this year, with plans to eventually expand that service to include all handheld Sony devices that have a Wi-Fi connection.
See? Unlike your bearded, deadbeat, pot-smoking pals at Apple, those clean-cut Johnny Unitas fans at Sony actually have plans for the future… not to mention music label interests, which might make it a little easier for them to brew up a happy little cumulus music cloud faster than Apple can. So let’s just forget about those losers at Apple and get all of those “handheld Sony devices” that we all own ready for… oh, wait.
