Soundscreen Artist Music Series features Brian Roettinger with a 10-inch of No Age to remind you who he is

Soundscreen Artist Music Series features Brian Roettinger with a 10-inch of No Age to remind you who he is

You might not know Brian Roettinger by name, but if you bought No Age’s Nouns (TMT Review) on CD, flipping through that fat book of photos and art made you one step closer. Hell, the packaging even got him nominated for a Grammy, so you might already know who he is (or maybe you were just cool enough to know about him through Liars, or better yet, “before No Age”).

If Roettinger was tired of the No Age connection, he’s not squelching it very well — but then why should he? Let’s face it; we live in a world in which more people know about individual bands than individual graphic designers, however innovative they may be. Brian Roettinger is this month’s featured artist for Soundscreen Design’s Artist Music Journal Series, and his edition is packaged with an exclusive 10-inch of — you got it — No Age plus Brian Roettinger, which means that Soundscreen has a chance at selling this one out.

There are only 1,000 copies of each Soundscreen edition (Roettinger’s is number 10), so if you want to hear those tracks — not to mention own 24 high-quality pages of Brian Roettinger greatness — pre-order here.

Matt & Kim avoid Brooklyn bedbugs by scheduling a fall tour

Matt & Kim know Brooklyn, and they know it well. Actually, they know it so well that they’re already planning a tour during the upcoming bedbug fall season, which starts in September. Don’t take it from me though; listen to this NY bedbug expert explain it himself: “As temperatures drop, poor little New Yorker bedbugs crawl into our apartments and under our comforters, seeking warmth and comfort from the harsh outside elements.” Yikes! You can’t blame the duo for mapping out another almost-two-month-long fall trek, now can you?

In addition to their upcoming tour, Matt & Kim will be releasing a new single entitled “Cameras” on August 31 from their forthcoming, as-yet-untitled third album (due this fall via the Fader label).

Rangda (Chris Corsano, Sir Richard Bishop, Ben Chasny) announce US tour with Major Stars, form Blazing Sword about 20 minutes later

Like an avant-garde Voltron, Rangda has formed itself from the lions of Chris Corsano (Flower-Corsano Duo), Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls), and Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance). The group’s debut release, False Flag, was released earlier this year on Drag City. Now, alongside Major Stars, the three-part avant super robot of Rangda are going on a US tour to protect us from, well, something or other. You never really know with these guys!

I bet they’ll end every show with the Blazing Sword:

BEAK> tours two states this September

Portishead’s Geoff Barrow will be touring with his band BEAK> for a few North American dates in September. Unfortunately, if you don’t reside on either coast, you’ll have to wait. So far, the band has released an album (self-titled) and a single, which besides a new song also includes three live tracks (if you want to know what you’re in for). Both are available digitally at the band’s Bandcamp page. For those who haven’t given the music a spin, imagine a looser jam-session version of Portishead’s album Third (TMT Review) minus Beth Gibbons’ vocals, which makes sense considering both the album and the single were recorded without overdubs in a single studio room.

BEAK>’s tourdates:

09.03.10 - New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom
09.04.10 - Monticello, NY - All Tomorrow’s Parties
09.07.10 - San Francisco, CA - The Independent
09.08.10 - San Francisco, CA - Amoeba Records (in-Store)
09.09.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Amoeba Records (in-Store)
09.10.10 - Los Angeles, CA - Troubadour

Stephen O’Malley waits creepily in the corner until October to release a solo cassette on Editions Mego

Summers don’t last forever. Already the late-August rains are ushering in both the coming of September and the beginning of dismal fall. This sucks for most of us, but not for Stephen O’Malley, best known as one-half of groups sunn 0))) and KTL. If you’re at all familiar with either group, then you’ll agree that O’Malley is the perfect contender for bringing in this new, dreary season. And he will indeed be doing so, if by doing so means releasing a 40-minute cassette of feedback-laden guitar drone for Editions Mego. The release is titled Cocon & Oiseau de Nuit and is the first in a series of three cassettes that O’Malley plans to release under Editions Mego. It consists of one extended track and will be let loose on October 1st, because it’s surely not a summer album.
