Dateline 2011: While his old Spacemen 3 chum Pete “Sonic Boom” Kember continues to satisfy his creative urge by gleefully ruining all of Noah “Panda Bear” Lennox’s music, his fellow music dabbler Jason “J Spaceman” Pierce has decided to take a break from his full-time gig (White Guy Nickname Inventor) to pursue another course; one that, you know, sometimes people who make music consider pursuing. It’s called writing songs and then subsequently putting them out in a new album. I know, odd choice for a such a brilliant nickname artist to make, right? But hey, different strokes, I guess.

Anyway, after a few of his standard delays, J Spaceman has finally announced the release of his new album, the follow-up to 2008’s Songs in A & E and the seventh Spiritualized album overall. Continuing in his compulsion to create nicknames for everything, the new album J Spaceman’s New Album has been cleverly nicknamed Sweet Heart Sweet Light. The actual date doesn’t seem to have been solidified yet, but it’s also due via Fat (“Big-bottom”) Possum Records in March (“February II”) of 2012.

After recording intermittently over the past two years in Wales, Los Angeles, and Reykjavik, Iceland (at least, I should hope it was intermittent), J headed to his own home to mix for a year. If this seems like a long time to labor over something, that’s because it is. But if you ask the man, he’ll tell you that sometimes you’ve just got to put in the hours. He’ll also probably tell you to fuck off. “When you make a record, it has to be the single most important thing in your world,” Pierce said in his press release. “This time around, I wanted to do something that encompassed all I love in rock ‘n’ roll music. It’s got everything from Brötzmann and Berry right through to Dennis and Brian Wilson. I’m obsessed with music and the way you put it together and I don’t believe there are any rules.” There you have it. Man likes his music. Stop judging him, already. Although actually, you can watch J performing two tracks from the new album live at Other Voices Festival over here and judge the shit out of them for all I care.

Earth’s Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light ROUND TWO scheduled for February 2012

Seattle-based sludge masters Earth have announced the upcoming release of Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II, the follow-up to their last album, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I (TMT Review), which made it on our mid-year Favorite Albums list. The new album was recorded by Stuart Hallerman at Avast Studios at the same time as the 2011 release and features the same lineup of Dylan Carlson on guitar, Adrienne Davies on drums, Karl Blau on bass, and Lori Goldston on cello, but is said to take the group in “an entirely other direction, recalling sounds of the great British Acid Folk generation.” Relying heavily on long-form improvisations, the new album is sure to make your innermost organs tremble to the core (in a good way).

Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II was originally supposed to be released seven months after the first installment, but was later pushed back by the band’s label, Southern Lord, to February 14, 2012. The band plans on touring prior to the album release, though no details other than word that the group will venture outside of their Northwest environs have been released. Stay tuned for more Earth-shattering news in 2012.

Jonny Greenwood attempts to score Scientology and P.T. Anderson, gives up and helps score P.T. Anderson’s movie about Scientology

About a year ago, Jonny Greenwood, eyes a-glitter, wrote down his only resolution for 2011. “Write a score for everything that exists.” Now that we’re in December, the yellowed piece of paper with that single sentence written on it lies in a corner of Greenwood’s lavish study, crumbled and burnt at the edges. “Hey, how’s the resolution going, Jonnny?” asked Mr. Greenwood’s loved ones. “Oh, it’s going great! Making a lot of progress, making a lot of progress,” Jonathan was known to respond. BUT HE DIDN’T MAKE NEARLY THE PROGRESS THAT HE CLAIMED THAT HE MADE. Turns out Greenwood’s first two subjects for scores were Scientology, the religion, and P.T. Anderson, the director. Suffice it to say, it didn’t work out.

Not to be totally defeated, Greenwood has combined his ambitious plans in the fields of person-scoring and religion-scoring into one easier goal. The high priests of the Consequence of Sound religion report that Greenwood is scoring P.T. Anderson’s new film The Master, which may or may not be at least partially inspired by Scientology. Oliver Weindling of British label Babel recently put out a tweet mentioning that the Radiohead guitar-playing guy recorded a track for the soundtrack with jazz outfit Zed-U recently.

If we’re to trust IMDB (and why wouldn’t we?), The Master is about a charismatic cult leader whose religion starts to catch on, along with a drifter who becomes the leader’s right-hand man. It’s also a movie with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Amy Adams set in the 1950s and set to be released in 2013. This isn’t the first time Anderson and Greenwood have teamed up, as Greenwood did the score for There Will Be Blood, nor is it the second time Greenwood has done a film score, since he also wrote scores for Norwegian Wood and We Need to Talk About Kevin.

RIP: Al Vega, longtime Boston jazz pianist

Al Vega, a longtime Boston musician who played with some of the finest jazz talents through a career that spanned 70 years, has died. He was 90.

Vega died Friday at Massachusetts General Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Kory Dodd said. No cause of death was given.

Vega, born Aram Vagramian in Worcester, Mass., was the house pianist at the Hi-Hat jazz club, and spent the late 1930s, 40s and 50s playing with some of the jazz greats, Boston radio personality Ron Della Chiesa told The Associated Press.

Della Chiesa said Vega teamed up with many jazz greats including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Count Basie and Duke Ellington and played many of the city’s legendary jazz clubs. He later led his own trio and became a fixture at Lucky’s Lounge, where he played Frank Sinatra tunes on Sunday nights.

“He was one of the most beloved musicians in the history of the city,” Della Chiesa told the AP.

Vega played both the piano and the vibraphone, and had hundreds of recordings as a pianist and a backup artist.

Oneohtrix Point Never stumbles into the MoMA and figures he might as well soundtrack a multimedia project

Daniel Lopatin, lover of religious relics (be they Buddhist, Christian, Hindi or otherwise) and the man behind Oneohtrix Point Never, is about to unleash what we can only assume will be a jaw-dropping, epilepsy-causing, tripped-out sneak attack on your brain. When New York’s MoMA hosts the project, entitled Reliquary House, on December 17, be prepared to hear all kinds of tongue-wagging from art historians and stuffy professors as they stare into the sky and proclaim, “Oneohtrix Point Never is fucking far-out!”

Collaborating with Mr. OPN on the multimedia project is visual artist Nate Boyce, who we can already tell is cool as shit. The event is part of the museum’s (also cool as shit) PopRally series, and we bet he has cooked up some relic-loving and Replica-humping (??) ideas for the occasion. Accompanying the visuals are new sounds from Lopatin, as well as “interstitial ‘sound sets’” from RVNG Intl. label head Matt Werth. Let’s face it, you’re gonna wanna get stoned for this one, buddy.

Damien Jurado releases new album Maraqopa in February according to the customs of our present epoch

Damien Jurado is hooking back up with Richard Swift to unleash the follow-up to last year’s Saint Bartlett (TMT Review). You can look at the backs of their necks in black-and-white and pretend you’re spying on them while they make a song by clicking here. Jurado’s either named the new project after a proud Arizona town or (more likely) his Twitter handle, Maraqopa, to really give himself a leg up with an intelligent social networking push.
