Tame Impala announce US headlining tour, because they're ready for some foooootbaaaaaaalll http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1212/news-12-12-tame-impala.jpg

Tame Impala are a psychedelic rock band from Australia who recently put out their acclaimed second record, Lonerism (TMT Review), on Modular Recordings. It made #37 on our Favorite 50 Albums of 2012 list. More importantly, though, they’re ready for some foooooooootbaaaaaaallllll! That’s why they’re coming to North America for a headlining tour. While I’m sure they’ll enjoy the shows, you know they’re more interested in watching some of that good old fashioned American pigskin.

Unfortunately, they are not coming here at the right time. The football season concludes at the beginning of February, while Tame Impala will start their tour in the middle of that same month. Very sad, very bad timing if they wanted to watch some football. Go to one of their shows if you would like to see some sad Australian guys. Also, go there if you want to hear some pretty great neo-psychedelic songs. Now, come on, let’s go throw the football.

RIP: Fontella Bass, soul singer

From Reuters:

American soul singer Fontella Bass, who topped the R&B chart in 1965 with the song “Rescue Me,” died in St. Louis. She was 72.

[…]

Bass was born into a singing family in St. Louis. Her mother, Martha Bass, was a singer in the Clara Ward Singers gospel group. Her brother, the late R&B singer David Peaston, scored a handful of hits in the 1980s and 1990s.

Bass first achieved success dueting with Bobby McClure in 1965 on songs such as “Don’t Mess Up A Good Thing” and “You’ll Miss Me (When I’m Gone),” both of which were hits on the pop and R&B charts.

Bass’ biggest hit came with “Rescue Me,” which shot up the Billboard pop charts in the fall of 1965, becoming one of the most popular soul hits of all time.

“It held a special place in her heart,” Mitchell said of the song. “She sang it every time she performed.”

The song has been covered and sampled numerous times over the years, including by pop stars Linda Ronstadt and Cher, and more recently in 2000 by UK group Nu Generation, who remixed the song into a dance track.

Mike Scaccia, the guitarist for Ministry and Rigor Mortis, died on Saturday night at the age of 47. Scaccia was performing onstage at the Rail Club in Fort Worth, Texas, as part of a 50th birthday celebration for Rigor Mortis singer Bruce Corbitt, when he collapsed. From Al Jourgensen:

I JUST LOST MY LIL’ BROTHER AND MY BEST FRIEND - THE 13TH PLANET COMPOUND IS DEVASTATED,COMPLETELY IN SHOCK AND SHATTERED. RIP: Ravi Shankar

From Firstpost:

Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, who is credited with popularising Indian classical music far beyond its borders, has passed away in a San Diego hospital at the age of 92.

The sitar maestro had been admitted at the Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego on 6 December due to complaints of diffculty in breathing and he passed away on Tuesday evening, the Hindu reports.

While he stormed Western culture with his collaboration with the Beatles, Shankar is perhaps the best known Indian classical musician beyond its shores.

A musician as much at ease with his own genre of music as with others, Shankar’s collaborations with legends in other genres of music and his own contributions to Indian classical music are perhaps unparalleled.

His long association with George Harrison of the Beatles led to his performances in legendary concerts like Woodstock and Concert for Bangladesh.

Apart from concerts, Shankar can composed memorable scores for films like Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi and Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy.

In a decorated career spanning ten decades, Shankar has received numerous acknowledgements for his contributions to the world of music including the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, the Music Council UNESCO award 1975, the Magsaysay Award from Manila. He has also won two Grammy’s in the past and is even nominated for this year’s awards.

New Foot Village album details leaked, and by leaked we mean officially announced

That new Foot Village record, Make Memories, due out next March on Northern Spy Records, was announced earlier this year with much fanfare during the second annual Spy Festival. It was also announced that the band would accept pre-orders for the record as early as December 21, so that in case the Mayan calendar was correct, Foot Village could pocket the money and evade world destruction in their private space shuttle. There are also new rumors going around pre-purchasers being awarded a secret gift before they meet their untimely end (remix tracks? early listens? who knows? we’re all going to die anyway).

BUT. This week the band proved that they’re terrible at keeping secrets and started spilling the beans on new album info, including an official album trailer (below), album artwork (above), and full tracklist (below). You can find all the teaser videos and more here.

Make Memories tracklist:

01. 1600 Dolla Bill
02. This Song Is a Drug Deal
03. AIDS Sucks, Make Money
04. New Jersey
05. Warlock
06. The End of the World

The Residents offer $100,000 box set to fans who are looking to mortgage their house

Do you have $100,000 handy? Do you really, and I mean really like The Residents? If yes, then there’s good news, as The Residents are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their first release: the 1972 “Santa Dog” 7-inch, with a 100+ piece box set.

The package is set to include first pressings of over 40 LPs, 50 CDs, a few dozen 7-inch singles, EPs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and videos, as well as a bobble-head doll and a genuine Residents eyeball mask. Oh, and did I mention it’s all packaged in a fully functional 28 cu. ft. refrigerator? No? Well, it is.

In the infomercial below, you can see Residents “front man” “Randy” dish out the details in a rather convincing sales pitch. If you answered “no” to my opening question, “Randy” suggests selling a kidney, smashing open some penny jars, or having a bake sale to get the scratch for the set, as this is a limited time offer, there are only 10 of these sets available, and the set is going on sale on their website December 25.

In addition to that, there is also a one-of-a-kind mystery box also set to go on sale this Christmas. What’s in the box? “Randy” isn’t saying, so you better find $5 mill quick.

If you can’t afford either of these sets and are unwilling to take out a second mortgage on your house but need a Residents fix, they’ll be on tour in January so keep your eyes peeled for upcoming dates.
