Quick! Your band is about to tour Europe for a while and you haven’t released an album since last year! What DO you do??? If you’re The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, you crank out a new 7-inch of some classic American cover songs, that’s what. USA! USA!
The Pains’ new single features one of the most patriotic Magnetic Fields tunes EVER, “Jeremy,” on the A-side, and East River Pipe’s red, white, and blue-bleeding “My Life is Wrong” on the B-side. Now get out there and show ‘em what American music is made of, Pains! (Okay, so maybe there’s really nothing quintessentially American about either of these songs… but hey, I did just LIE to you! And lying is pretty American, right?)
The single will be released on October 10 via Slumberland. It was recorded this past June at Rare Book Room, and “Jeremy” is currently streaming at the Pains fan-Tumblr thing here. Speaking of her long-time love of all-fields-magnetic, “The Magnetic Fields might have been the last band I ever unconditionally loved without ever stopping to try to understand why - just the kind of love story I hoped to one day live through.” See? There you have it. Jeremy has spoken. Oh shit. I’m not even thinking of the right song, am I?
