The Twilight Sad to tour the US this spring in order to raise awareness about US spring tours

The Twilight Sad to tour the US this spring in order to raise awareness about US spring tours http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1302/news-13-02-twilight-sad.jpg

On November 20 of last year, while everyone in America was busy pre-cooking their spectacular Thanksgiving dinners and not reading music websites for news concerning UK bummer-core bands, FatCat Records quietly released a remixed version of the UK bummer-core band The Twilight Sad’s saddest album to date, No One Can Ever Know. The collection, unfussily titled No One Can Ever Know - The Remixes, featured, you guessed it, “takes on cuts from The Twilight Sad’s acclaimed recent album No One Can Ever Know by established acts such as Liars, Tom Furse of The Horrors, and Com Truise.” How totally unsurprising! And, at the same time, utterly surprising!

Anyway, since an entire continent was not paying attention at the time, the band has announced that they’re coming over to the US this spring (a notoriously slow news season) as a “stripped back 3-piece” to support that remix album… and, I guess, the album it was remixed from… and, I guess, the band Frightened Rabbit, with whom they’ll be touring. No, seriously; they really did “announce” it. Here’s the announcement:

We’re very happy to announce that we will be supporting our good friends Frightened Rabbit on their West Coast dates in North America. During a night in the pub with FR we both agreed we’d love to tour with each other again and they suggested we come do some shows with them as a stripped back 3-piece which they have seen us do back home in Scotland many times before. We agreed, so that’s what we’re doing. These stripped back shows will give people in North America the opportunity to see the band in a different way. We’re hoping it will showcase how important our songwriting process is and having a good song to begin with before adding the production is to our band.

I hope for the band’s sake that none of these dates interfere with America’s Downton Abbey schedule. Because I don’t know about you, but I’ve only got room for so many UK bummers.

TMT writer Collin Anderson involved in serious accident, currently in intensive care

Terrible news, TMT readers. On Saturday, February 2, TMT writer Collin Anderson and his girlfriend Rachel Firak were involved in a serious car accident. They are both currently in intensive care with family and friends.

We here at TMT are extremely concerned. Our thoughts are with Collin and Rachel. Please do the same in support. And, while you’re at it, check out Collin’s work here as “unicornmang.” He’s enormously talented, incredibly thoughtful, and does far more for TMT behind the scenes than readers could know.

Special thanks to the family for keeping us updated. Our thoughts are with you too.

We love you Collin and Rachel!

Hydra Head Records entering second stage of rehab

Last September, after nearly 20 years of releasing some of the best in metal and its various related styles and subgenres, Hydra Head Records announced they were closing their doors. Truly a major loss for music fans, the label had to cease most of their operations in the face of financial difficulties due to the realities of running an independent record label and a rapidly changing music industry (I blame you kids and your downloading). In November, the label announced a rehab plan to hopefully raise enough funds to keep their back catalog available for the long haul.

Well, now it’s the new year and the next phase of their Financial Rehab Program is in effect. The label has acquired enough funding to roll out another series of rare and limited-edition releases. Highlights include a new t-shirt designed by label and Isis co-founder Aaron Turner, some (ab)used music gear Turner used in Greymachine and House of Low Culture, as well as some Isis vinyl rarities. Hurry and look between the couch cushions and under your mattress because a lot of this stuff is selling fast.

Unfortunately, it’s “[s]till highly unlikely” Hydra Head will be putting out any new material. In the meantime, the label is planning a large-scale repressing of items from their back catalog. For complete details, check out this blog entry on the Hydra Head site.

In addition to the re-releases, a few bands associated with the label are touring this Spring. Tourdates below.

RIP: Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner of The Ohio Players

From NPR:

Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner, leader of the funk band the Ohio Players, has died at the age of 69. No cause of death has yet been reported.

The Ohio Players had seven Top 40 hits in the 1970s, including “Love Rollercoaster,” “Fire” and “Skin Tight,” and helped define a movement that included Parliament Funkadelic and Kool & the Gang. The band’s success stemmed partly from Bonner’s playfully commanding lead vocals and gusto.
