Still having those dreams where everything seems all rainbows and bubblegum until you stop to look a little closer and it turns out you’ve actually stumbled into a meadow full of flesh-eating monsters and zombies? But then, maybe those zombies and monsters just want to be friends?? It’s all so confusing, but kind of satisfying in way… well, get ready for more of the same!

Following up on the June release of their spooky psych rock full-length Castlemania (TMT Review) on In The Red, San Francisco-based band Thee Oh Sees are holding true to their natural prolific nature by announcing the release of Carrion Crawler/The Dream, a new LP due out November 15, also on In The Red. After releasing two albums in both 2008 and 2009 (and then just the one in 2010), expect another announcement about their first record for 2012 any day now.

The Olivia Tremor Control dabble in some existential pondering on new single “The Game You Play Is in Your Head, Parts 1, 2, & 3”

The Beatles-meets-Lumpy-Gravy sound of Olivia Tremor Control has been slowly seeping back into the minds and hearts of devoted fans this year, as the band announced a string of live dates after several years of hiatus (including an appearance at All Tomorrow’s Parties), a new track titled “North Term Reality,” the prospect of reissued albums on Chunklet Industries, and the news of a new album set to be released sometime next year.

Naturally, we at Tiny Mix Tapes have been feverishly squirming in our urine-soaked britches in excitement and anticipation for new material from this legendary Elephant 6 act (and they’re not the only legendary group that’s been showing recent activity). Well, it seems as if our pants are going to perpetually get wetter, seeing as the band released another new track (supposedly from the upcoming album) titled “The Game You Play Is in Your Head, Parts 1, 2, & 3.” The song is available as a single via Cloud Recordings, but you can stream the track and read an interview with the band at NPR. You should also check out the following fall tourdates below and see if the band is stopping near your city (and if not, suck it up and travel as far as you need to see these guys. Sam Hillmer of Zs to refuse sleep and release solo release as Diamond Terrifier in September

In an attempt to surpass Richard Youngs and Madlib as the most prolific artist ever in the universe of all time, Sam Hillmer of Zs has announced yet another project, Diamond Terrifier, which will release its first full-length, Himalayan Appalachia, on a limited-edition cassette tape September 17 on Sockets Records. This is in addition to the upcoming release by his other project, Black Crown Ceremony, and a plethora of other shit from Zs.

The cassette, consisting of two 20-minute solos on tenor sax, will be introduced on September 17 at Diamond Terrifier’s release party at Brooklyn’s Death by Audio. The performance, featuring friends from Parts and Labor and No Babies, will be accompanied by projections from Trouble, Hillmer’s art duo project. If that weren’t enough, he’s then going to wake up the next day and coach his Fly Girlz through his non-profit new music organization, Representing NYC. And then we hear he’s going to call up James Franco on the phone and be all like, “What now!? You ain’t got shit on me!! BLAH!!”

Check out a preview of Himalayan Appalachia over at the Chocolate Grinder.

Himalayan Appalachia tracklisting:

Side A:
01. Two Witnesses
02. Three Things

Side B:
01. One Point
02. Five Dark Ages

Lil B releases mixtape about forgiveness, in talks to host peace summit

It’s been nearly two months since Lil B let us know he’s Gay, but just when you thought the Based God went into recycling mode by releasing music videos for pre-Gay tracks, he returns with a new mixtape, I Forgive You. Given that he and The Game recently squashed their beef, it’s all the more fitting that we hold hands, make peace, and forgive and forget.

Lil B’s latest boasts 12 new tracks that skew toward darker territory, such as “Heard Her Cry,” dedicated to women in abusive relationships. Think that’s more morose than Lil B was capable of? Well, leave it to him to remind you it’s because he’s “2 Real” on the closing track.

The mixtape might offer less ‘“cooking dance swag,” but we have to agree with Game — it’s Memphis Bleek, not Lil B, who is the wackest rapper of all time. Hit up Livemixtapes to grab the free download.

I Forgive You tracklisting:

01. Tonight
02. I’m in the Streetz
03. I Forgive You
04. Can I Live 4real
05. Durty Pop
06. Neva Stop Me (Remix)
07. Take a Picture BasedGod
08. Bitch Fuck with Me
09. Gotta Question
10. Heard Her Cry
11. 30 Year BasedGod
12. Im 2 Real

RIP: David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Delta blues legend

From the Chicago Tribune:

David “Honeyboy” Edwards, a bluesman who was a living, breathing link to blues legend Robert Johnson, died early Monday morning of congestive heart failure while resting at home, according to the performer’s official website. He was 96.

Born in 1915, Edwards left home when he was 14 years old, to perform with Big Joe Williams. It was a life on the road that the classic Delta blues player continued right up to April of this year, when his health took a turn for the worse. His last live outings were in Mississippi, on April 16 and 17.

The list of musicians that Edwards played with is immense, also serving as a Who’s Who of great blues artists. Edwards has worked with Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, Big Joe Williams, Rice “Sonny Boy Williamson” Miller, Howlin’ Wolf, Sunnyland Slim, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Big Walter, Little Walter, Magic Sam, Muddy Waters. Edwards’ career included several hit songs, such as “Long Tall Woman Blues,” “Gamblin Man” and “Just Like Jesse James.” He has won two Grammy awards, in 2008 for best traditional blues album, and a 2010 lifetime achievement award. Edwards’ biography, “The World Don’t Owe Me Nothing,” first published in 1997, described his life of almost constant motion and performing.

Sebadoh announce tour to save your marriage

If Sunday’s VMAs taught me one thing, it’s that I am completely out of touch with youth culture. If it taught me another thing, it’s that I clearly have no idea what teenagers think is cool anymore. So, after watching Nicky Minaj (spelling?) and some nine-year-old kid named Tyler win awards, I quickly rushed home and found refuge in my old cassette collection and flannel shirts and came to the realization that my Golden Year, 1991, is already 20 years ago. Wait… are you for real? Holy shit! 1991 is 20 years old! God, I’m old! I’m old, aren’t I?

If you’re like me, realizing suddenly that you worked (drank) away your youth and that you are NO LONGER COOL, then do what I do and find solace in old bands from your wonder years that still go on tour! For instance: Sebadoh have made it public knowledge that they will indeed be going on tour! In October, the scruffy young lads in Sebadoh, who made their name with fantastic albums like III and Bakesale (which was lovingly reissued earlier this year), will be revisiting all of their favorite dive bars and independent music venues across the country as they bring their “lo-fi” music to the (aging) masses.

So forget that best-of classical compilation, toss out that Michael Bolton CD, and find a band you loved as a teenager and go see them on tour. It saved me and my marriage!
