There are two things I’ve given up hope of ever understanding:

1) Sub-genres of hardcore music
2) Kids these days

Case in point: Title Fight, who are a melodic hardcore (or maybe post-hardcore or possibly just hardcore) band from Kingston, Pennsylvania who have been kicking around some subset of the hardcore scene since 2003, which in hardcore years is a very long time. Whatever you want to call it, Title Fight play loud music with drums and guitars and screaming; it sounds great and that’s enough for me.

It turns out that it’s also enough for Anti- Records, who have signed Title Fight to their label for the release of their third album, which the band is currently recording with their long-time producer Will Yip. As a label, Anti- sure are hedging their bets with a roster that already includes Tom Waits, Wilco, Tinariwen and Simian Mobile Disco. Which goes to prove the above made point that good music knows no genre, I suppose.

I still maintain that I’ll never understand kids these days, though. Have a look at the video below, which Title Fight posted to the web to announce their signing to Anti-. Is that Paris Hilton? Is it possible that she’s actually saying “Title Fight”? If you slow down the video does it become any more compelling? Does anyone actually even care what Paris Hilton endorses these days?

Mexican Summer releases 7-inch by Coral Cross, new project/absurdly-named genre of music by Jorge Elbrecht (Haunted Graffiti, Lansing-Dreiden)

“Choral thrash.” Sure, you could call your music that. It’s pretty much the metalgothest thing you could say, short of, like, “sad iron fetus weeping blood-thrash.” But I mean, if you’re Jorge Elbrecht, a fella who’s made glorious and lovely contributions to Lansing-Dreiden, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, and Violens, and who is now releasing a killer new 7-inch under the name Coral Cross, you can kinda do what you want. Available August 12 in the US and September 1 in the UK and Europe, Coral Cross - 001 is coming out via our friends at Mexican Summer. Elbrecht’s got some kinda crazy tour with Jimi Hey (BI, All Night Radio), Lev Weinstein (Krallice), and visual artist Max Hooper Schneider coming up in August that’s billed as a “one-time audio-visual presentation of the project.” So… PowerPoints? Elbrecht will hold the laser pointer and Schneider will ensure that only the very FINEST in clip art will be inserted into the slides. How fucking choral thrash is THAT?

Sell your dreams (buy tickets)! The Pop Group to reissue We Are Time, release rarities comp, and tour the UK this fall

English post-punk legends The Pop Group have announced a fall tour of the UK. They will be playing their 1980 album We Are Time in full, which they will also reissue in a from-the-original-tapes remaster. Additionally, the English quartet will include some more rarities and unreleased material in the reissue, compiled under the title Cabinet of Curiosities. And just in case you were about to berate them for their blatant commercialism, keep in mind that the tour is also meant to support the Campaign Against Arms Trade initiative, so save your hating for more deserving targets.

Formed in the late 1970s, the band released an epochal triptych (1979’s Y, 1980’s For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? and We Are Time) before breaking up in 1981. Later, their vocalist and leader Mark Stewart embarked on a solo career that fused dub with noise, sampling, electronic music, and even hip-hop, coming up with groundbreaking — albeit criminally overlooked — LPs like Learning to Cope with Cowardice (1983) and Metatron (1990), which are more than due a reappraisal. The Pop Group reunited in 2010 and have been touring ever since, announcing (already a couple of years ago) a yet-to-be-released new album; the Cabinet of Curiosities anthology is thus far the closest we’ve got to hearing new material by the Bristol quartet.

Despite lacking the popularity of contemporary acts like Joy Division, Wire, The Fall, Public Image Ltd, or even Gang of Four — this is the band’s first ever tour of the UK — The Pop Group have been influential in their mixture of punk, free jazz, and disco grooves, a cocktail fueled by politically charged lyrics and a belligerent ethos. Indeed, throughout their three-and-a-half decades of existence, they’ve managed to pick-up some illustrious fans: Nick Cave pretty much admitted to conceiving The Birthday Party after watching The Pop Group perform, freshly arrived in London. More recently, St. Vincent covered one of The Pop Group’s best-known songs on US television, later weaving the track into her touring setlist.

Tickets for The Pop Group’s first-ever tour of the UK are out now through the band’s website. The We Are Time reissue and the Cabinet of Curiosities compilation are out on October 20, via Freaks Are Us.

Blur set to release new live album, just in time for a long long time ago!

Hey, sweet news, soccer hooligans! You know that British band, Blur? Remember, they were huge in the 90s for releasing that album Loveless that everyone is into? But then they had those two look-a-like brothers who just couldn’t keep it together because they constantly disagreed over which one of them was more sexually attracted to 1968-era John Lennon?? Then, on top of that, they got SUED by the Rolling Stones for using that string sample in their huge single and never made a dime??? Yeah, THAT band. That’s Blur. Jeez, are you sure you’re a music fan?

Well, either way, now’s your chance to get reacquainted with those “blimey blokes” or however people talk in the UK! As Consequence of Sound reports, they’ll be releasing a new live album called Live at the Budokan on August 11 of this year. I know what you’re thinking. And unfortunately, no, it’s not a Cheap Trick cover album. Instead, it’s a recording of the way-way-back 1995 set the band played at that venue in Tokyo, Japan in support of their then-current fourth record The Great Escape. Check out one of the tracks from it down below to decide retroactively just how much you loved that era of Blur and just how many copies you’ll be ordering.

By the way, the recordings were actually released in Japan a while ago, but this is the first time they’re being made available worldwide. So, you know, it’s a lot more important now. Oh, and there’s gonna be all-new album art and a remastering job courtesy of Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road. Which, I hope goes without saying, is the name of the orphanage where the Dave Clark Five members met each other.

Arca announces joint US tour with Total Freedom, promises to bring Jesse Kanda along for rad visuals

Ever wondered what “trifecta” means? It’s quite simple actually. Let me give you an example. If you are at all interested in the underground electronic scene, you might have heard about the Stretch EP series a couple years back, featuring the elastic-but-choppy post-industrial beats that have come to characterize much latter-day dance music. If you follow Latin indie music, you already know that 2013’s best album was &&&&&; an eerie, dubby mixtape that once again managed to operate at the edge of contemporary dance music. And finally, if you’re into progressive hip-hop production, you might have noticed a young Venezuelan who’s been working with a vast gamut of people, going from Kanye West’s Yeezus to up-and-coming sensation FKA twigs. What those three have in common is Alejandro Ghersi (a.k.a. Arca)’s involvement; certainly one of the most promising talents out there right now. So there you go: trifecta!

It turns out that Arca has just announced a few US tour dates for September; he actually intends to take the joint show he premiered along visual artist Jesse Kanda at Pitchfork and MoMA PS1’s FORMS last October. But not content with that, Ghersi has added Total Freedom to the tour’s bill — and not just as an opening act! The show will first present Total Freedom and Arca DJing solo, but will close with a collaborative “4CDJ” set by the two. Jesse Kanda will provide visuals throughout the evening. The association between the two has been running for a while now, and aside from co-producing the TRAUMA video art piece, has also seen Kanda’s artwork featured in FKA twigs’ Arca-produced material. Total Freedom is best known for his noise-laden R&B mash-ups, which indeed makes his Arca collaboration something to look forward to.
