Traxman to release full-length LP on Planet Mu, prepping European tour with fellow footworker DJ Earl

Traxman to release full-length LP on Planet Mu, prepping European tour with fellow footworker DJ Earl http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/news-12-02-traxman.jpg

Traxman, aka Cornelius Ferguson, was producing tracks before your momma was born. Which is not to say that he’s “old” or anything, but that your mom gave birth to you when she was especially young. However, I’m also saying that, for someone who has been innovating since the days of 90s ghetto house, it’s surprising that this footwork/juke originator has managed to settle into an easily discernible style without sacrificing the cutting-edginess of his music: his music both pays tribute to early house music and envisages the future of dance music, a reflection of a veteran producer who knows what the hell he’s doing in the studio.

So, it’s a big fucking deal that Traxman, who is part of both the Geto DJz and Ghetto Tek (with DJ Rashad, Spinn, etc.) cliques, is releasing a full-length on Planet Mu. Titled The Mind of Traxman, the 18-track album continues his signature footwork/juke style — most widely heard on the first two Planet Mu footwork comps — which often incorporates soul, funk, house, and 303 acid lines into the usual footwork template of minimal beats, sub bass, and repetitive, cut-up samples. You can hear samples of the tracks at Planet Mu, as well on Mike Paradinas’ mix from earlier this year at the Chocolate Grinder.

Traxman is planning a European tour with fellow Ghetto Tek producer DJ Earl, who has his own full-length, New Era, coming soon on Oslo label Electropix. Details forthcoming. In the meantime, look for The Mind of Traxman April 9 on Planet Mu. And please, someone give Traxman his own reality TV show.

NNA Tapes justly announce Eli Keszler and Keith Fullerton Whitman split LP

The world is corrupt with injustice. The examples are everywhere and abundant: the misconduct of police toward peaceful Occupy protesters, lobbyists in D.C. enabling the momentum of evil corporations, Pitchfork Media dictating taste to impressionable children, the band Fleet Foxes being a band, etc. Now and then, however, justice is served, and justice has manifested itself as a new release of actual good music from NNA Tapes.

NNA Tapes has announced a split LP between world-renowned electronic music composer Keith Fullerton Whitman and multi-instrumentalist composer Eli Keszler. According to the press release, the LP (due out April 3) is a conversation in sound between two prominent artists, one working in the electronic realm (Whitman), and the other in the world of live acoustics (Keszler). This exciting event in musical history may perhaps be the first recognizable step toward a brighter future in decades. And the revolution will be televised, or at least broadcast on NPR in an interview with Eli Keszler.

Yes, my children! A new dawn is born on the horizon! The streets will run with the blood of capitalists! CEOs will dangle from nooses! Fleet Foxes will disband!

02. Bowed Crotales, Snare Drum
03. Drums, Guitar, Crotales
04. Cymbal, Bass Drum, Clarinet

Zammuto to open for Explosions in the Sky on US tour, Explosions in the Sky fans to treat whole Zammuto set like an even longer build up to an Explosions in the Sky climax

The Books’ Nick Zammuto has a new project and it is called Zammuto and it is also a very exciting thing. As you MIGHT HAVE HEARD, he’s putting out his self-titled debut full-length on April 3 through Temporary Residence. Mr. Zammuto will celebrate that release by hobnobbing with his Temporary Residence labelmates Explosions in the Sky on an April tour of the United States. Yes, despite only having three songs released, Explosions in the Sky are opening for Zammuto on a tour of theaters and similarly large venues. Wait, that can’t be right. Let me check my notes.

Okay, notes have been checked. Explosions in the Sky are headlining and Zammuto are opening. Really, that probably should have never made it to final print. You now know how the sausage is made. One has to wonder, though, are the climax-happy fans of Explosions in the Sky going to put up with the more subdued sounds of Zammuto? Eh, I bet they will. Those folks seem pretty languid.

Zammuto dates (all w/ Explosions in the Sky):

04.05.12 - Boulder, CO - Boulder Theater
04.06.12 - Grand Junction, CO - Mesa Theater & Club
04.07.12 - Salt Lake City, UT - In The Venue
04.08.12 - Missoula, MT - Wilma Theater
04.11.12 - Eugene, OR - McDonald Theater

Wooden Wand releasing deluxe edition of Briarwood LP, touring the US in a flying car

The forthcoming two-disc deluxe edition of Wooden Wand’s Briarwood will include eight demo versions of tracks from the album, recordings that James Jackson Toth describes as his grimoire. I didn’t know what the hell a grimoire was at first, but I imagined it might resemble an old trunk filled with sticky, silver, primordial clay. I’m not sure why, just something about the way the word sounds. Good thing I looked it up to check, because a grimoire is actually a book of magic spells.

Anyway, when he wasn’t summoning spirits or practicing invisibility, Toth recorded those eight tunes at home in Lexington, Kentucky on a Roland BR1600 digital eight-track, and he says that they don’t sound much like the album versions, save for the vocals. Toth recorded the album versions down at Ol Elegante Studios in Homewood, Alabama along with a new line-up of musicians (magicians?) assembled just for this album — including his best friend, Brian Lowery, as well as Duquette Johnston and his band The Gum Creek Killers, plus Jody Nelson of Through the Sparks. Briarwood – Deluxe Edition will see an April 17 release via Fire Records, and Wooden Wand will be touring the US in March. Who knows, maybe they’ll teach you a thing or two about magic spells.

You can listen to both demo and full studio versions of “Winter in Kentucky” here!

Busdriver and Del the Funky Homosapien, together at last on new EP

Once upon a time, way back when, before you could send your young ones to school with GPS attached to them, there was that one bus driver who smelled like he never used dental floss and he’d make fun of your (actually awesome) holographic Cabbage Patch lunchbox. Then, one day he died and you were all, “I’m too young to understand death, so whatever, no more insults from the bus driver. Free at last!”

Anyway, that story has nothing to do with anything except that the mean old dead guy shared a name with the dude who’s collaborating with Del the Funky Homosapien. Yep, that radical weirdo Busdriver is set to release an EP with the legendary Del the Funky Homosapien. Or if you’re in the know you might refer to him as “Del tha Funkee Homosapien,” who is one of the very few highlights to come out of Oakland. You punk-ass snitches better recognize. Busdriver, just like your breast feeding high school “friends”, took to his Facebook page to share the news.

(Fair warning: if you’re going to click over to Busdriver’s site make sure you’ve already eaten something as scrumptious as those Voodoo Doughnuts look.)

Dean Blunt of Hype Williams leaks goth R&B LP The Narcissist II

Sure, David Lynch is already making electronic music under his own name, but a listen to the new Dean Blunt LP could certainly fool one into thinking the duo’s ghostly brand of 3 AM R&B shot straight outta the auteur’s brain and into the grooves of a long-forgotten private press soul record. Hyperdub confirmed that Blunt, the male half of Hype Williams, leaked a new solo record(/mixtape?) called The Narcissist II on Sunday. The female half of Hype Williams, Inga Copeland, is featured toward the end of the free recording.

If The Weeknd delves lyrically into the scary side of the late night lifestyle, The Narcissist II is like the soundtrack to a horror film. It’s like INLAND EMPIRE through a funk filter: both beautiful and terrifying. Full of samples, cell phone vibrations, and enough atmospherics to make you take a baseball bat to bed, the LP likely won’t be around online for free for long (download here).

Meanwhile, Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland have a new LP coming out April 17 through Hyperdub called Black Is Beautiful (FYI: it is not under the Hype Williams moniker), and if it’s anything like this one, fans will be scrambling to get it. Or get away from it. The tracklisting for Black Is Beautiful is listed below:

01. Venice Dreamway
02. 2
03. 3
04. 4
05. 5
06. 6
07. 7
08. 8
09. 9
10. 10
11. 11
12. 12
13. 13
