Wavves add more tourdates with Phoenix; Nathan Williams teaches Thomas Mars how to properly inhale http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/news-10-09-wavves.jpg

Did it totally shock you earlier this summer when it was revealed that Wavves will be opening for Phoenix and Dirty Projectors at Madison Square Garden on October 20? I think Nathan Williams himself was even a little surprised. Apparently Phoenix are just as curious as we are to see how Wavves will function in a large-scale venue, just as we were curious about their large-scale studio venture, King of the Beach (TMT Review), as Phoenix’ve decided to add seven more shows with Wavves to extend their fall tour down the East Coast. Or maybe Thomas Mars just really wanted to pick Williams’ brain about the art direction for Wavves’ new video for “Post Acid.”

Low go on tour, promise “Slowest Show on Earth” or your money back

Seems like Low haven’t had this many dates in a row in awhile, but you can’t really blame them. Based on my ridiculous preconceived notions, Alan Sparhawk spends most of his day gazing wistfully out a window, all the while occasionally sipping from a glass of Drank. Not much time for touring with a schedule like that. But, evidently, a wild hair has struck the band, as the long-running slowcore group is going on tour. Most of the dates hit Europe, but there are a few Australian and New Zealand shows in the itinerary, along with a single North American date at the tour’s tail end. If you see a slower show this year, Sparhawk will personally refund your ticket purchase. Offer not valid anywhere.

10.18.10 - Auckland, New Zealand - King’s Arms
10.19.10 - Wellington, New Zealand - San Francisco Bath House
10.21.10 - Melbourne VIC, Australia - Melbourne International Arts Festival

Shearwater and Damien Jurado tour together, hold a contest to see who can be quiet the longest

Jonathan Meiburg from Shearwater and Damien Jurado are both sensitive dudes, so it makes sense that they would team up together for a US tour this fall, Shearwater supporting their recent The Golden Archipelago (TMT Review) on Matador and Jurado slingin’ his equally new Saint Bartlett (TMT Review) on Secretly Canadian. What doesn’t make sense, though, is the “see who can be quiet the longest” contest that they seem to have decided to both participate in during their tour. Guys, I know both of your singing voices barely register above a whisper, but is this really necessary? My money is on Jurado, as I’m pretty sure Meiburg will immediately lose once he lets out his bellowing baritone every night.

Catch them this fall on the road and find out for yourself.

The Flaming Lips to perform The Soft Bulletin in its entirety!!!!

Attention, TMT readers: The Flaming Lips have just confirmed that they’ll be performing The Soft Bulletin — scientifically proven to be one of the greatest albums in the history of music — in its entirety at London’s Alexandra Palace! The show, part of ATP’s Don’t Look Back series, will take place on July 1, 2011. But which version will they perform? The UK version? The US version? I have my money on the 5.1 version (tracklisting below).

And as if that weren’t enough, the event will also feature Dinosaur Jr. performing Bug and Deerhoof performing my personal favorite, Milk Man. Seriously, what the fuck!

And hey, for all of you outside of London, don’t worry: I’m guessing this won’t be the only time the Lips will perform The Soft Bulletin in its entirety. They wouldn’t want all that practicing to go to waste, right?

Possible Wayne Coyne answer: “Right!! You’re so smart, Mr P! Like, terrifyingly smart. Actually, you’re probably the smartest guy I know.”

Tickets go on sale September 3 at 10 AM.

The Soft Bulletin 5.1 tracklisting (so you can train your brain to hear The Soft Bulletin the way The Flaming Lips want you to hear it):

01. Race for the Prize (Sacrifice of the New Scientists)
02. A Spoonful Weighs a Ton
03. The Spark That Bled (The Softest Bullet Ever Shot)
04. Slow Motion
05. What Is the Light? (An Untested Hypothesis Suggesting That the Chemical [In Our Brains] By Which We Are Able to Experience the Sensation of Being in Love Is the Same Chemical That Caused the Big Bang That Was the Birth of the Accelerating Universe)
06. The Observer
07. Waitin’ for a Superman (Is it Gettin’ Heavy??)
08. Suddenly Everything Has Changed (Death Anxiety Caused by Moments of Boredom)
09. The Gash (Battle Hymn for the Wounded Mathematician)
10. Feeling Yourself Disintegrate
11. Sleeping on the Roof (Excerpt From Should We Keep the Severed Head Awake??)
12. The Spiderbite Song
13. Buggin’ (The Buzz of Love Is Busy Buggin’ You)

The Morning Benders announce fall tourdates in Europe and North America, add whisky to your coffee

Most everybody has heard about The Morning Benders by now, but how much do we really know about this indie band from Berkeley? (Four guys from the Bay, joking about matutinal alcoholism? A likely story!) Big Echo (TMT Review), contrary to what you might have assumed by the Benders’ surge in popularity, isn’t even their first album. I mean, had you heard about them before this spring? Yeah. Surprised? It helps when a member of Grizzly Bear co-produces. Get this, then — there’s also no connection with the mid-90s Calvin Johnson/Doug Martsch project The Halo Benders. More like The Truth Benders, if you ask me.

By now, The Morning Benders have been resounding across the States and Europe since early this year, and they don’t intend to put a halt to that reverb. After almost constant touring, both as headliners and supporting the likes of Broken Bells and The Black Keys, they’re continuing to spread Big Echo across the plains. Look out, Europe and North America — they’re comin’ back around. Around. Around. (And then heading to Australia for January dates, where the echo puns change into boomerang jokes.)
