Ween give Facebook a purpose and release Quebec demos through social-networking black hole

In a blink-and-you-missed-it moment earlier this month, Dean “Mickey Melchiondo” Ween updated his status on Facebook and surprised fans by letting them know that what was on his mind was a double-album’s worth of Mp3-only songs titled The Caesar Demos. All of the music contained therein was recorded between 2001 and 2003 as the band worked up ideas and rhythms for what would eventually be the fourth-best Ween album, Quebec.

Then, just as fast as the tracks appeared (and because of crashing servers), Deaner removed his status update from all of the known internet. However, as we all know, nothing ever really gets deleted from the internet and multiple people who downloaded the initial post have been reposting the songs. Now, as Dean cackles wildly at his plans coming together perfectly, Ween fans have begun trading the tracks like baseball cards.

“[A]lmost all of this was recorded at our beach house in Holgate, NJ onto 16 track tape,” explains Dean. “A tiny bit of it was recorded in the garage behind Aaron’s (Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman) house in Pt. Pleasant, PA. Some of it was recorded in the spare bedroom of my house in New Hope. Most of the tunes are just me and Aaron, with the two of us playing everything, with me on drums. The songs with Claude, Dave, and Glenn are pretty obvious. On just a few tunes we took what you hear here and cleaned them up and had Andrew Weiss mix them for the record after some overdubs.”
