White Hinterland drops new single, announces album release and tour dates, now totally BFF with Ke$ha http://www.tinymixtapes.com/sites/default/files/1402/news-14-02-white-hinterland.jpg

Casey Dienel, the woman behind experimental pop project White Hinterland, is back with a new record for Dead Oceans. It’s more pop than experimental this time around, and it’s got enough guest artists to make Drake happy, plus it’s got those typical old Top 40 themes of “breaking established rituals and setting out into the unknown.” It’s also called Baby, so there’s that. You can check out lead single “Ring the Bell” below.

“What guest artists?” you might be asking. “Is Ke$ha involved in some way? Bieber? Is it a tribute to Bieber’s career-making hit single?” To which I would say, “Can you get me a glass of water, the mere mention of the artist Ke$ha made me puke.” So no! Ke$ha is not involved! Nor is the Biebs. But Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey), Neal Morgan (Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan), and Cole Kamen-Green (Beyoncé) are! These fine individuals show up throughout Baby, the first album Dienel recorded in The Glades, the studio she spent five months building in her parents’ basement in Scituate, MA. Dienel spent months teaching herself production, weeding through YouTube tutorials about ProTools and shit, so she could do the followup to 2010’s Kairos (TMT Review) her way. The album drops April 1, and Dienel goes on a super-lengthy US tour right after.

The Body announce collaborative album with The Haxan Cloak entitled I Shall Die Here on RVNG Intl.

Look, y’all, I’m going to go ahead and dispense with all the “dark, doomy, slow, turgid” stuff that would usually gum up the beginnings of one of my news posts on a new record from The Body because what’s really important here is that THE BODY HAVE A NEW RECORD COMING OUT. Did the all caps I used just now make it clear or should I repeat it? I’m not going to repeat it. There’s no time.

The new record, which follows last year’s Christs, Redeemers (TMT Review) is called I Shall Die Here because as everyone knows, the word “will” is super un-metal. “We get it, we get it, we have a pretty good idea of what The Body sounds like Taylor, why are you in such a hurry?” Shut up. I haven’t gotten to the most important part. The most important part: I Shall Die Here isn’t just some regular old record from The Body that I would also get super excited about. Nope, I Shall Die Here is a super special The Body record because it’s part of a collaboration with The Haxan Cloak’s Bobby Krlic.

That’s right, now in addition to the terrifying depths of heaviness The Body have been able to bring about through the use of guitars and drums and amps and stuff, they have enlisted Krlic’s super bummed-out robot shovel army to make things even darker and heavier and more capable of making your sunny Sunday feel like the end of the world. Or maybe, if you’re the physical manifestation of the press release I just read, you might say that the album, “sonically serrates the remains of metal’s already unidentifiable corpse and splays it amid tormented voices in shadow.” Cool! Also a little gross!

I Shall Die Here is out April 1 from RVNG Intl. on LP, CD, and digital. Scope the video for “Hail to Thee, Everlasting Pain” below (featuring guest vocalist Ben Eberle), which involves some heavy outer space shit and is for that reason pretty dope.

I Shall Die Here tracklisting:

01. To Carry the Seeds of Death Within Me
02. Alone All The Way
03. The Night Knows No Dawn
04. Hail to Thee, Everlasting Pain
05. Our Souls Were Clean
06. Darkness Surrounds Us

Mac DeMarco hastens the midlife crises of elder music fans, announces Salad Days LP on Captured Tracks, upcoming tour

Absent any specificity on the matter, let’s go ahead and assume that Salad Days, the upcoming sophomore LP from the musically gifted, aspiring vagabond Mac DeMarco, was composed and recorded with relative calm in between the morning brushing of teeth and the mid-morning tea-gathering with all of DeMarco’s closest buddies. Consider his previous international tour; then consider his upcoming international tour (dates below); then consider the time constraints necessitating windshield nozzles for a good once over, where shower access otherwise proves impractical. Avoid the eyes, focus on the pits, and air dry on the way to the next venue. No worries, adjacent cars! Mac is the epitome of generous when it comes to the dissemination of wayward pit hairs. I imagine so, anyway!

More than a year after its release, the first listen of 2 surprised the hell out of my ears with its overwhelming aura of feel-goodness. Salad Days, set for release April 1 on Captured Tracks, appears to maintain both the aura and the lyrical thoughtfulness, but with some instrumental dressing separate (or supplementing) the previously forefront guitar. I do generally prefer to avoid namedropping, but it seems reasonable to suspect the mutual musical rubbing-off of DeMarco and Matt Mondanile on one another, in addition to the literal rubbing on. I’d say expect a Salad ripe for tossing… around to one’s friends in the form of an unequivocal recommendation.

Salad Days tracklisting:

01. Salad Days
02. Blue Boy
03. Brother
04. Let Her Go
05. Goodbye Weekend
06. Let My Baby Stay
07. Passing Out Pieces
08. Treat Her Better
09. Chamber of Reflection
10. Go Easy
11. Jonny’s Odyssey

White Hills dish on tour dates, expanded-edition So You Are, favorite Super Bowl ads

You guys know about hills, right? Okay, good. And you’ve probably seen some hills at some point (probably during this ball-blasting, snowy-ass winter, at least) that are white? Great! Then your minds are in optimal condition for what I have to say about White Hills (you know, that spacey, krautrocky psych band?) releasing an expanded digital version of last year’s impeccably tautly reviewed So You Are… So You’ll Be, announcing some spring tour dates (including a stop at Austin Psych Fest), and appearing in Jim Jarmusch’s new movie Only Lovers Left Alive.

So… yeah. They are doing all three of those things! How psychedelic is that? So You Are… So You’ll Be is coming out on April 8 via Thrill Jockey as an expanded reissue. The new version features three tracks taken from Timeless Tracks for Aural Pleasure, a vinyl-only 12-inch that was previously available only through through two somethings called “mail-order” and “independent retailers.” It also has some new artwork and comes with a new “booklet of lyrics and images” but I mean, let’s face it: it’s digital, so who cares about those words I just said?

The tour dates include a few shows in London and Paris (with Jozef Van Wissem, and Jim Jarmusch’s band SQÜRL) to celebrate the release of Jarmusch’s cool new movie (coming out April 11 in the US), in which that band appears alongside the likes of Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and John Hurt — as well as that appearance at Austin Psych Fest in early May that I kinda already told you about. Hey, speaking of which, when you think about it, aren’t white-colored hills probably the least psychedelic color that hills could possibly be? Just sayin’.

White Hills tour dates:

02.06.14 - London, UK - Heaven Nightclub *
02.11.14 - Paris, France - La Machine *
04.24.14 - Brooklyn, NY - Saint Vitus Bar
04.25.14 - Baltimore, MD - Metro Gallery
04.26.14 - Wilmington, NC - Orton’s Bar and Billiards
04.27.14 - Durham, NC - The Pinhook
04.28.14 - Atlanta, GA - EARL
04.29.14 - New Orleans, LA - Siberia
04.30.14 - Houston, TX - Fitzgeralds Downstairs
05.01.14 - Dallas, TX - City Tavern
05.02.14 - Austin, TX - Austin Psych Fest
05.03.14 - Austin, TX - Austin Psych Fest

Public Image Ltd ask fans for help with photos/video for new documentary

Ahh, the late-70s/early-80s. A simpler time. A time without Instagram, a time without shitty cellphone videos, a time that makes it sort of difficult for bands to assemble previously unreleased footage of themselves to throw together into a documentary feature about groundbreaking post-punk experimentalism. Such is the quandary in which Public Image Ltd now find themselves.

In recent years, the band has released a full-length, This Is PiL, and played a few shows. Now John Lydon and crew are hoping fans can help them look back to their earliest days, sending out a call for photos and video of early PiL on their website. “Do you have a photo souvenir of the infamous Ritz riot show? Do you have a picture with or without John showing your injuries after being hit by a flying object!” the website asks. Photographic and video evidence can be submitted to PiLarchive [at] gmail.com. Selected material will receive a shout-out in the documentary’s end credits, and a small possibility that Lydon will learn to love you even more than he loves butter.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion announce spring tour, rename band unpronounceable moniker spoken in ancient tongue

First of all: insider information suggests that Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra have once again changed their name. Though it has not yet been confirmed by the group, sources claim that the band’s new name can only be pronounced in a long-forgotten tongue and even if you possessed the knowledge to speak it, reciting the unholy words to completion would take three natural lifetimes. For brevity, though, you can just call them A Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra And Tra-La-La Band With Choir, A Silver Chair Resuscitation Gone To The Holy City Jerusalem As The Sky Fills With Paladin’s Fire. Or, for further brevity, ATSMZOTBCSCRGHCJSFPF.

Last of all: Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra […] are going on a spring tour through the US and Canada. They’ll be playing songs off their very, very new album Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything (TMT Review). The end.
